LOOKING BACK – YESTERDAY
What went well?

1. Windows Media Services 2008
I fixed my Windows Media streaming problem.  I was troubleshooting WMS2008 when I made changes on the WMS2003 server into a new name.  When I did that, the whole setup was changed programmatically. Now I have to rename the internal link of the stream because there is no other way to go back to default settings.  I have one choice – to restore my hyper-v backup but then the SQL Server also will be restored to –2weeks of data of which I did not have a database backup to fall back.  My solution – change the streaming url to correct the problem. Here’s the new url . Case closed – I just need to edit >60 html pages and insert the web publishing name \ondemand in the original hyperlink.
Lesson Learned:
1. Don’t experiment with the production setup.
2. Backup Hyper-V regularly and backup up SQL DB also.

Here’s what I’ve been reading lately:

2. Last Mile Sprint
In the past days, I’ve been observing Brittney and Brent regarding their way of doing school homework.  I noticed that they love to do it on Sunday – at the last minute.  (I find it non-Rigel way) So yesterday, I asked them why?  The quick answer was – Dad, we want to enjoy the long weekend first.  Psychologically this is the norm.  People tend to enjoy the moment first and then later suffer.  I told them, go through the hard part first, endure the hardship, endure the difficult moments and then enjoy the rest of the journey.  I hope they understand “the principle of hardship first then glory” and not the other way around.

3. Cardiac Status
Sometimes I forgot that I am a cardiac patient (343 days in recovery) and two days ago, I was reminded that my heart is not what it used to be.  I was running in the treadmill (5.5mph) but realized that I was breathing hard at normal pace (@PE-15, normal is PE-11).  The incident got my attention and I immediately lower the exertion.  For 1mile, it took me 14 minutes to complete.  I’ve been doing 11.2 minutes in one mile.  This is my stress test – to gauge where my heart function is.  I don’t like running anymore but performing a mile test on the treadmill gave me a clear status of my cardio system (Clinical Stress Test is somewhat like this minus the EKG and the radioisotope). I’ve noticed that my heart rate at rest has been slower than normal lately (about 55 bpm). I have no chest pain and just not breathing well.  Is this a pulmo problem?  Hmmm.  I’ll find out later if I am able to continue to live.  Anyway, I’m writing this stuff here because I want to be transparent to the world about how I live my life and how I face difficulties like this.  It is really tough on my part but I am bravely facing the fact that sooner or later I have to go.  When that time comes, REJOICE! and always remember that I found something special in life – The Holy Spirit. Go read again 1 Corinthians 2.12.

Borg Perceived Exertion Scale
The Borg Perceived Exertion Scale gives you an idea of how hard your exercise feels. If it feels light (less than 12), you should increase the pace of your exercise, walking, biking, swimming, etc.  If the exercise feels hard (14 or greater, you need to slow the pace.  Exercise should feel somewhat hard (12-13).

4. Brittney and her new Colorado 4×4 Pickup Truck
Today is the first time Brittney will be driving her truck to school.  We did some last minute training yesterday on driving the pickup truck.  I’m not worried about her driving, just concerned about the variables that she haven’t seen yet.  She is a good driver but then she only show this when I am there with her.  Although sometimes she accelerates too quickly and I think that this is due to the V8 engine power.  This vehicle is lighter than the Yukon and more powerful.  People asked me why I choose this truck for a 17-year old girl.
WHY?
o Pickup truck is bigger – safer (I hope so)
o Z71 High Stance – safer (I hope so)
o I needed a pickup truck for hauling stuff at home when I am doing household work
o V8-to limit the mileage of the teenager – makes her think that she just can’t run around leisurely.
o 4×4-When I was a child, I always like off-road vehicle, this is my dream vehicle
o Why GM-Chevy? For some reason I like the quality of my 2002 Yukon – no major problems in 7 years after travelling from Texas to Florida 2x, New York-DC 1x.  Colorado was like a baby Yukon. Other option was a GLK350, a smaller version of Britta’s ML350.  I turned down the other choices due to Brittney’s being young yet.  She can get that on her own when she has her own income.
o In Texas, every home has a pickup truck in the driveway (maybe 80%)

What didn’t go so well?

LOOKING BACK – YESTERDAY
What went well?

1. Recorded a short piano video of Brent “Paparazzi” using an old MiniDV Sony Camcorder DCR-PC101.  The project was not about the video recording or his performance but it was for me to experiment on Windows Media Service in W2008.  It turned out that he was doing well on the presentation and agreed to publish it on YouTube.  There are two places that the video reside, one in my streaming video server (not sure if this works outside my firewall, intranet is fine) and the other one in YouTube

2. Brittney and Brent went out playing tennis between 6pm-9pm at Old Settler’s Park. Brittney on night driving test with the new pickup truck.  Parents were worried.

3. Completed Brent’s piano recording hardware setup with the notebook on the side for duet with YouTube and the video cam on the left side.

What didn’t go so well?
1. Unable to complete the Windows Media Broadcasting due to software issues.  Need to read more on this later.  Somehow, the new version of Windows Media services is harder to configure.
2. Planned 30 miles on the bike – it was cold and no motivation.

SONG: Your Hands

This song touched my heart. Maybe it can touch your heart too.  I have everything I need right now but there is one prayer that is left unanswered since I became a born again Christian. Your Hands explains all that I am thinking. ;-(

 [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlL8LayF0uw&hl=en_US&fs=1&&hl=en]

Your Hands
BY KATIE HERZIG, JJ AND DAVID HELLER
I have unanswered prayers
I have trouble I wish wasn’t there
And I have asked a thousand ways
That you would take my pain away
You would take my pain away
I am trying to understand
How to walk this weary land
Make straight the paths that crooked lie
Oh Lord, before these feet of mine
Oh Lord, before these feet of mine
When my world is shaking, heaven stands
When my heart is breaking
I never leave your hands
When you walked upon the earth
You healed the broken, lost and hurt
I know you hate to see me cry
One day you will set all things right
Yeah, one day you will set all things right
When my world is shaking, heaven stands
When my heart is breaking
I never leave your hands
Your hands that shaped the world
Are holding me
They hold me still

Luk 11:10  For everyone who asks and keeps on asking receives; and he who seeks and keeps on seeking finds; and to him who knocks and keeps on knocking, the door shall be opened.

Law of Asking – keep asking and you will receive whatever you are asking
Law of Seeking – keep seeking and you will find what you are seeking
Law of Knocking – keep knocking and the door will be opened for you.

Leader and Guide; Day325; Mentoring #6 Discover Yourself

Psa 31:1  To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. IN YOU, O Lord, do I put my trust and seek refuge; let me never be put to shame or [have my hope in You] disappointed; deliver me in Your righteousness!
Psa 31:2  Bow down Your ear to me, deliver me speedily! Be my Rock of refuge, a strong Fortress to save me!
Psa 31:3  Yes, You are my Rock and my Fortress; therefore for Your name’s sake lead me and guide me.

Deu 31:8  It is the Lord Who goes before you; He will [march] with you; He will not fail you or let you go or forsake you; [let there be no cowardice or flinching, but] fear not, neither become broken [in spirit–depressed, dismayed, and unnerved with alarm].

In cycling, drafting somebody will  make your effort 25% less.  Drafting-following a cyclist’s wheel by 2 inches and let him/her break the wind in front of you.  Same thing with God, He goes before us so that we really don’t have to do anything special as we enjoy the ride.

Mentoring 101 – GTD
A few years back, I came across GTD and I was really impressed of how simple it is to get things done if we only follow certain principles.  I am not going to explain here what it is because the articles below will do that for you.  I placed this as #5 in the mentoring project because to me, this is one of the basic foundation of how we will be able to attain our full potential.  Print the flow chart in color and hang it in your wall for easy viewing.  If you come to my home office, these two GTD flow charts are visible right above my dual monitor screen.  A simple GTD rule: if you can do it in 2 minutes, do it, if not, schedule it and put it in your calendar or to do list.  The MIT on my journal came from the GTD.  MIT’s are very important, it becomes my goal for the day and when I accomplish that, I am satisfied and call it a successful day.  For those of you who are just starting to embrace the life of an adult, please don’t miss the opportunity to master GTD.  Believe me, If I’ve known this GTD system when I was 24, my life (I think) could have been much simpler.

Infinite Source; Day323; Mentoring #1-2 Faith

Mal 4:2  But to you who give worship to my name, the sun of righteousness will come up with new life in its wings; and you will go out, playing like young oxen full of food.

It is amazing to wake up and feel good about being alive again for another day.   A close friend of mine mentioned to me that sometimes he does not have any motivation at all to get up and start a new day.  Me too, I feel that way sometimes but there is something that I do every morning that wakes me up and motivates me – I go to my daily devotional calendar and lookup the message for the day and then stare at the message until I fully comprehend the message.  I don’t want this to be a secret anymore, please try it yourself and you will see how uplifting it.  Now you are thinking that I am going crazy…. no.  Once you read the scripture of the day, reflect it to your own life and imagine how it unveils the possibilities of what you can do for the day.  It is really amazing.  These words mentioned here are short messages from God.  There were times that the word of the day coincided or predicted the occurrence of something.  How I wish I can transfer that secret to all of you.

To my new friend, (Mentoring 101)

Honoring His Name; Day322

Psa 86:10  For You are great and work wonders! You alone are God.
Psa 86:11  Teach me Your way, O Lord, that I may walk and live in Your truth; direct and unite my heart [solely, reverently] to fear and honor Your name. [Ps. 5:11; 69:36.]
Psa 86:12  I will confess and praise You, O Lord my God, with my whole (united) heart; and I will glorify Your name forevermore.
Psa 86:13  For great is Your mercy and loving-kindness toward me; and You have delivered me from the depths of Sheol [from the exceeding depths of affliction].

I want to honor God in everything I do. Once in a while, I get this assignment to reach out to someone outside my circle.  Often times I am reluctant because I don’t even know what to say or do or write.  It happened to me recently and I have to start from nothing and build up a conversation to this person.  I am a quite guy (for those who don’t me) and I hope that I am doing it right.

Blessings; Day321

1Pe 3:9  Never return evil for evil or insult for insult (scolding, tongue-lashing, berating), but on the contrary blessing [praying for their welfare, happiness, and protection, and truly pitying and loving them]. For know that to this you have been called, that you may yourselves inherit a blessing [from God–that you may obtain a blessing as heirs, bringing welfare and happiness and protection].

Blessings – help believed to come from God or another deity; approval or good wishes; something to be glad or relieved about; to be favored by God

I love favors especially the ones that happen unexpectedly. I cannot count how many times I received a special favor from God.  You too, you received a lot of blessings, count it and you will be amazed how blessed you are.  Some of you here are not really experiencing the best of everything but I want to encourage you to do good things (keep doing it) and later great things.  The blessings will flow later.  For those that is just starting life and/or still at the very beginning phase, do good things every day, say good things, encourage people to do the same, spread peace and love, tell the good news, share your joy. Don’t do it because of the blessings. Do it as an act of obedience and you will see incredible things happen  in your life.

Let me just enumerate the big ones here: (not in order).

my obedient daughter
my smart son
my wife’s job at St. David’s (13 years)

What went well?

1. 32-Mile bike ride was great.  I changed my strategy on food. I brought 2 clif bars and started eating @mile 10 (half only), after the next 10 miles I ate the remaining half. It works.  I was climbing the last 7 miles of the ride with no difficulty at all.
2. Expanded my friendship to a high school friend (AC)
3. Me and Brent are doing Aikido basic technique training.  He seems to be so interested.  I started when I was 18, he is only 13.
4. Britta started her walking/running program (finally). I am her only cheerleader, Day0001 was yesterday.  She had done this before and was successful and lost 20 lbs,  She is currently at 165lbs. (-30)
5. Successfully setup remote desktop to a client in Austin.  I am now able to work on his Windows 2003 Media Server remotely and setup media streaming.  Imagine working around the world without being actually there at the server.  We are currently testing a future business that we can run remotely.  We build the server here in Round Rock and later send it to the client around the world.
6. Log Parser testing was successful, learned new query on IIS log files.  Loving it to be able to do “one click” to verify a web server activity.  Still more work to do.  The Sharepoint logs are not user friendly
7. Scheduled a cycling training with a partner for today, hopefully it will happen. Long distance cycling with a partner is great (shared suffering = less pain)

What didn’t go so well?
1. My daughter drove with an expired driver’s license and I missed it.
2. My daughter asking to go somewhere on a school day and I said YES, I thought it was for the weekend permission. (i was tricked or just not listening too well to the client)

Faith=Knowing+Experience; Day320

Eph 3:17  May Christ through your faith [actually] dwell (settle down, abide, make His permanent home) in your hearts! May you be rooted deep in love and founded securely on love,
Eph 3:18  That you may have the power and be strong to apprehend and grasp with all the saints [God’s devoted people, the experience of that love] what is the breadth and length and height and depth [of it];
Eph 3:19  [That you may really come] to know [practically, through experience for yourselves] the love of Christ, which far surpasses mere knowledge [without experience]; that you may be filled [through all your being] unto all the fullness of God [may have the richest measure of the divine Presence, and become a body wholly filled and flooded with God Himself]!

I need your beacon.
DEFINITION: Beacon-flashing light for ships: a lighthouse or signaling buoy that produces a flashing light to warn or guide ships; radio transmitter producing navigation signal: a radio transmitter that continuously broadcasts a signal that aircraft use for guidance.

One of the reason that I am keeping a journal and placed it online is for my family and friends to know my status (my well being and not “look at me”).  Remember, I am a cardiac patient and a lot of people are worried about me.  By writing something here, my words become a flashing light that my body and mind are still functioning well.  It is like a tiny LED light telling the world that I am recovering well and my mental status is just normal.  It makes other people aware of what I am up to, what I am thinking and what are my current projects. I know that not all of you are capable of doing this type of motion in life but bear with me, it’s there for a reason and some of you are listening.  If you don’t like it, just don’t read.  Sometimes I question myself if what I am doing is TMI (too much information).  Sometimes it is but sometimes I requested to share something to the world and I have to obey.

My beacon is consistent but I’ve noticed that some of my friends are not.  There were times that I am reconnected to a good old friend.  There are excitements in the first few days and all of a sudden, SILENCE.  This occurrence is cyclical and always visible to some of you.  You say hello sometimes and then another SILENCE for a few months then reconnect again. I am OK with that but for people that I am helping with or assisting in their life struggle, I need your beacon, I need your flashing light to signal me that you are doing fine. Tell me about the progress of your relationship, tell me the progress of your job search, tell me the progress of your health, tell me the progress of your faith, tell me the progress of your kids, tell me the progress of your exercise program.  Even a simple message of “I’m still here” is fine.  I just needed to know that you are still there and you don’t need to write me a novel about your status – one liner is fine.  I’ve been slowly adopting the LEAN Pull System in my life and I will not respond to the next item until there is a need for it. LEAN Push and Pull System . So please, if I was in some form helping you or talking to you, or writing/exchanging email with you regarding something, I need your beacon.  Say something, comment on something or maybe just text me that you are fine.

Daily beacon with regards to our faith is how we grow in our faith.  How can God know our heart if we don’t signal Him of what we do in real life.  God needs our beacon to gauge us of where we are in our walk with Him.  I know He is watching us but a constant communication with Him really build a stronger faith.  Faith is establishing a relationship and it is a day to day relationship.  If you try to skip a day, there is a possibility of slipping.

Some of you are suffering more than the rest of us.  My only encouragement is don’t give up.  Stay in our faith.  If you give up the faith, I don’t really know what else works.  Cry if you must but always pray. Our daily struggles strengthen us, motivates us and teaches us.  It is there for reason …. it is just a matter of finding the reason and sometimes it does not have an explanation at all.  If you really have to make a very difficult decision, please let me know and we will decide things “The Bible Way” and in that we can never go wrong.

Out of Darkness; Day319; Daughter @17

Psa 107:14  He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke apart the bonds that held them.
Act 2:1  AND WHEN the day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all assembled together in one place,
Act 2:2  When suddenly there came a sound from heaven like the rushing of a violent tempest blast, and it filled the whole house in which they were sitting.
Act 2:3  And there appeared to them tongues resembling fire, which were separated and distributed and which settled on each one of them.
Act 2:4  And they were all filled (diffused throughout their souls) with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other (different, foreign) languages (tongues), as the Spirit kept giving them clear and loud expression [in each tongue in appropriate words].

Out of Darkness:
A big question comes to mind – What is darkness? How do you get out of the darkness?
Gal 5:19  Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
Gal 5:20  Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
Gal 5:21  Envying, murders, drunkenness, reveling, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

These are darkness:
Adultery – extramarital sex: voluntary sexual relations between a married person and somebody other than his or her spouse
Fornication – consenting sex involving somebody unmarried: sexual intercourse between two consenting adults who are not married to each other
Uncleanness – unchaste: sinful, especially involving or guilty of committing a sexual sin
Lasciviousness – lewd: showing a desire for, or unseemly interest in, sex
Idolatry – Image worship, watching undesirable images/videos
Sorcery – Practicing magic or witchcraft
Enmity – Hatred, hostility: the extreme ill will or hatred that exists between enemies
Strife – Quarrel, bitter conflict or rivalry: bitter and sometimes violent conflict, struggle, or rivalry
Jealousy – Possessively watchful of something
Anger – Strong feelings of grievance and displeasure
Selfishness – looking after own desires: concerned with your own interests, needs, and wishes while ignoring those of others
Division – disagreement: a disagreement or strong difference of opinion, especially when this leads to a split in a group
Heresy – unorthodox opinion: an opinion or belief that does not coincide with established or traditional theory, especially in philosophy, science, or politics
Envy – feeling bitter and unhappy because of another’s advantages, possessions, or luck
Drunkenness – intoxicated: overly excited by or as if by having consumed too much alcohol
Carousing – drink and become noisy: to drink and become noisy, especially in a group

How do you get out of the darkness?
I don’t claim to be totally 100% out of darkness in my life.  I am just like you and I am tempted just like you.  Until the time of our departure, we will experience some type of darkness in our life.  On the big ones above, those are ‘uncheck’ in my life already but it does not mean that I will not fall into temptations, we all are and that is why being a Christian is a daily walk.  We have to do it daily, renew our vows daily, renew our faith daily and walk faithfully daily.  For those who don’t me personally and haven’t peek in my past, don’t ask but I’ve been there and done that (not so bad though) and the bad thing is a few people knows about it.  I’ve hurt people (emotionally, not physically), I’ve crossed the line made by my parents, I’ve disobeyed/violated some rules before and I used to drink and smoke and party (boy’s only).  I don’t do those things anymore. I don’t even go to a party anymore.  I kept myself separated from those temptations because I’ve been reborn into a new ME.  Believe me, cleansing my lifestyle took a long time.  I always wanted to clean myself up physically, mentally and spiritually but the efforts were just wasted. I had so many resolutions that never made it into the next week.  I’ve tried mind control, self control, meditation, physical discipline and Aikido etc, never work.  Even having a beautiful girlfriend (now my wife) did not work.  Each of us has our own struggles, we noticed it every time we get up in the morning.  Those craving of something, those ill feeling, those anger, those jealousy and envy, depression, sadness, uncertainty …. how we wish it will be replaced with PEACE.  I don’t have a magic wand to get rid of all that but I know a way to get into a peaceful state.

I am at peace now. Nothing bothers me anymore. Not because I survived many near death incidents … but because I believed in something.  Keep searching, keep looking and one day you will be set free from your darkness.  There is a cure out there and it is freely given to us. I never heard of Acts 2:4 before but after I went through the infilling of the Holy Spirit, my whole life changed.  Please read this article – The Baptism of the Holy Spirit for more information.  It has 13 pages but I want you to known that this thing exists.  A true change in our life will happen only after the Holy Spirits dwells in us.

Today is the 17th birthday of my daughter. Nothing fancy. All four of us attended the Sunday service at Celebration Church.  Normally, it is just me and cc. The message was “Moving Forward on your Giving”  I did not realize how hard it is for us to give – not necessarily money but our life, our dedication, our trust, our attention, our time, our love, our devotion, our faithfulness, our honesty, our ears to listen to others.  I do hope that one day by my example, people will freely give.

True God; Day318

Joh 17:11  And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
Joh 17:11  And [now] I am no more in the world, but these are [still] in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, keep in Your Name [in the knowledge of Yourself] those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We [are one].
John 17-Full Chapter

True God
Yesterday, I was asked by somebody why he was dreaming dreams (weird dreams) and I replied that I will email him my explanation later this weekend.  When I got up this morning (0530am), I looked at my daily devotional calendar and today’s study is the 17th Chapter of John.  So I read the full chapter and there it is – the answer to his question, John 17:3, True God. This is not coincidence. Someone higher up was orchestrating two lives. One asked the question and the other provides the answer. Awesome God.  There is only one true God and I can’t explain it well at this moment because I am pressed for time.  His story started at Genesis, then the prophets foretold his coming and it happened in the New Testament in the person of Jesus Christ and then during His death, He said He will send His Holy Spirit to us.  Long story short – God—>Jesus—> Holy Spirit . It is the Holy Spirit that will be the one touching our lives as He did by revealing himself through questions like this or dreams that we dream or people that we met.  He touched our hearts even now as you are reading this journal.  He is speaking to you.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

There is only one true God.

Times of Trouble; Day317; Fort Hood Tragedy

Psa 9:9  The LORD also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.
Psa 9:10  And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

Times of Trouble:
Perfect timing for the word study today- it comes synonymous to the tragic incident in Fort Hood Texas. I was stationed in Killeen, Texas for approximately 3 years and when I heard on the radio about the shooting, it hits home right away.  I know almost every corner of the Army base.  Killeen was our home for a while when my daughter Brittney was still 2 years old.  I really have so many memories and good times and bad times from that small town.  Being a soldier is not as simple as it might look as displayed on TV or news coverage or any publicity stunt produced by the department of defense.  It might look really cool when guys are jumping out from the airplane or rappelling down from a low flying helicopter or having a rucksack and an M16 on the shoulder or driving an M1A1 Abrams tank or running around early in the morning for daily physical training.  The really hard part of being a soldier is not the physical aspect of it but instead on the psychological and emotional well being.  Physical toughness can be acquired immediately after boot camp but mental toughness of being a soldier takes some time to develop especially when you have a family. Soldiers are not well compensated also and there is always a financial hardship in a soldier’s life. Other things to consider is the stress level during the deployment.  I was fortunate when I was there in Ft Hood because I was assigned to the III Corps Headquarters Group of which most of our duties was just to support the high military ranking officers for their daily needs. ie. transportation, logistics, maintenance etc.  The rest of the group in Ft Hood are either member of the 1st Cavalry division and 4th Infantry Division. Those guys in that unit always has something unusual on their plate and they are always on the move, always training and always deploying.  On the other side of being in the military is the family.  If you are in the military, your spouse becomes a member of the family also.  I can still remember how my family was unable to rest and relax during the weekend because of unpredictable training exercise that lasts for at least 2 weeks at a time (being away from home is a norm).  I have to be away for 2 weeks and Britta has to find a baby sitter to take care of Brittney while she goes to work.  Civilian life is too easy (I think). Now, I normally gets a 3-day weekend and not even have to worry of any deployment or being temporarily assigned to go somewhere.  Being deployed is the hardest part of a soldier’s life especially when you have a wife and a child.  When in combat, there is always somebody beside you and soldiers tend to bond to each other when placed in difficult situations.  But place a soldier away from his family, that soldier will cry and break down.  I’ve seen and heard it so many times and even experienced it myself.  In September of 1992, I was in New York after the boot camp and had my orders to be deployed to South Korea for 1 year hardship tour (no family), while going back to New York from Fort Knox, Kentucky, my emotions/morale was fine but during the time when I have to say goodbye to Britta (departure from JFK to Korea), I cried so much and I question God why did He allowed me to be separated from her again.  The emotion is really hard to describe.  At that time, she was 7 month pregnant of Brittney.  To me, going away like that was the hardest I’ve ever experienced while I was in the military.  I’ve survived difficult situations, slept wet in a sleeping bag, walked miles and miles for several days and been deprived from any comforts for weeks but the hardest part of being a soldier is being separated from his family.  That is why most soldiers I know don’t really have a true smile in their face.  Other stress factor I’ve learned is infidelity in the military.  Most of my friends had marital problems and when they come home from deployment and then learned that the spouse is doing something else, sometimes they snapped.  It is really hard to detect an emotionally troubled soldier.  We are trained to maintain our composure, we are trained to ignore outside factors and focus on the mission.  Hardly I’ve ever heard a comrade tells me his personal problems.  People in the military, they are just emotionless individuals but when put at the end of the rope, they sometimes just do crazy things.  I was thankful I was already a Christian believer when I joined. I had the advantage of faith and whenever I have troubles I just got to a secret place and pray.  The things that happened yesterday was a tragedy and I don’t think that those are preventable.  It happens all the time because we live in reality and we experience problems day to day and we always react in ways sometimes unexplainable.  The person pulling the trigger was in trouble, he has problems and made a mistake of choosing violence over resolving his problems peacefully.  If only he knows that there is a “place of refuge”.

Below is a the Soldier’s Creed that every US Military knows. I carried this card all the time while I was still in the service to remind me of my duties.  Read it, it is worded elegantly and if taken seriously,  you will never hear/seen a news like that – a soldier out of control and the sad part, he was an officer.

The Soldier’s Creed

I am an American Soldier.
I am a Warrior and a member of a team.  I serve the people of the United States and live the Army Values.

I will always place the mission first.
I will never accept defeat.
I will never quit.
I will never leave a fallen comrade.

I am disciplined, physically and mentally tough, trained and proficient in my warrior tasks and drills.  I always maintain my arms, my equipment and myself.
I am an expert and I am a professional.
I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy the enemies of the United States of America in close combat.
I am a guardian of freedom and the American way of life.
I am an American Soldier.

To all good soldier’s out there, be encourage and let this tragic incident be a lesson learned.  You have a job do.  Be safe and adhere to what you signed up for.

Done Deal; Day316

Rev 21:6  And He [further] said to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I [Myself] will give water without price from the fountain (springs) of the water of Life. [Isa. 55:1.]
Revelation 21

Done Deal:
Have you ever started a huge project that requires a lot of effort and resources?  Have you ever discarded a project because you thought that you were not going anywhere and you felt that you were just wasting your time.  Sometimes I feel this way when I am in the middle of a big project that are stagnant.  Sometimes I hope that if only I can see the outcome before I even start step 1. How I wish God will show me the ending so that when I experience a setback, I can just convince myself that the story will still end beautifully…. but wait… didn’t Revelation promised us a “done deal” ending?

Lately, I’ve met new friends who [out of nowhere] just showed up in my life.  Or maybe we know each other before and we just began to reconnect.  There is always a beginning and I promise you that when you connect/reconnect with me, there is a higher purpose and there will be a great ending.  I’ve met a few good friends in my life and I’ve noticed that these friends just come and go.  Sometimes we tackle a marriage problem, sometimes we solve a technical problem, sometimes we troubleshoot a financial problem, sometimes we brainstorm a psychological problem and sometimes we try to solve a problem that we don’t even know it existed.  A few of you that knows me know what I’m talking about.  Yes, we see a difficult problem in front us and how I wish I can just tell you that the ending is fabulous. How I wish I can boldly say that in the middle of your journey, you will find what you are looking for. How I wish that I can tell you that you will find a job in one corner of the world.  How I wish I can tell you that your marriage will be fine even if you argue everyday.  How I wish I can tell you that the life storm that you are experiencing will stop soon.  How I wish I can tell you that your suffering will come to an end soon.  Honestly, I can’t tell you that.

But I want to tell you that there is a promise in the Bible that says “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Rev 21:4” Our life is a done deal.

Interesting Dream:
There are dreams that I pay attention and this is one of them.  I saw the beginning, I saw how it all started, I know what happened in the past but the middle and the ending part is still a mystery.  With this dream, it reveals something that will happen in the future. I hope that one day I will see the “homecoming” come to reality.  It feels like God started something great, left out the middle part but then later hinted that the ending is great.

What went well?

1. I tested the Log Parser script that I put together the other day and I was able to query a remote client in just one click.  I was able to merged the two event log files (System/Application).  Although, this was just a test, it placed a great value of helping me troubleshoot a software crash happening at work.

2. Last week, our team [at work] made 2 huge mistakes that has a potential loss of product.  Coming back to work was a mixed feeling.  I was expecting a nasty gram from the boss of how we missed to mistake proof our procedures.  Long story short, there was not much damage to the product.  Lesson learned-pay attention on what you are doing and enforce “quality in every step”.  Of course the team now knows how to play the game perfectly.

Boss is Coming; Day315

1Th 4:16  For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud cry of summons, with the shout of an archangel, and with the blast of the trumpet of God. And those who have departed this life in Christ will rise first.
1 Thessalonians – Chapter 4

Many of us act differently when the boss is not around.  We do crazy things or we slack off or we tend to be lazy when no one is watching us.  Honestly, my motivation of my actions as a Christian is not based on the reward that I will receive or the pat in the back (that I will get later) telling me that I am a good and faithful servant.  My motivation is just plain sharing of what I know and what I personally experienced, what helped me in my struggles and what guide me when I am lost.  Yes, the boss is coming but we know that if we are obedient of His commandments and we execute His orders then we don’t need to worry about His return.

So what are we suppose to do before the boss comes back

Satisfied Soul; Day314

Psa 107:8  Oh, that men would praise [and confess to] the Lord for His goodness and loving-kindness and His wonderful works to the children of men!
Psa 107:9  For He satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry soul with good.

Satisfied Soul
I used to wake up depressed, sad, tired, no motivation, lost and always wondering what to do next or not what to do.  I read books (self help books) to find the truth of how to really satisfy my longings (now I read the Bible every morning, just a few verses to feed the soul).  I’ve tried meditation and it works for a while.  I’ve tried Aikido and it was fulfilling for some time but it never sinks in towards the soul satisfaction.  Then later, I discovered cycling and it was great for a while until I almost died when a car struck me from behind.  I love cycling most because it gives me freedom to go anywhere plus I can just cruise when I am tired.  My other favorite escapade was a solitude of 1 hour in Merida pantalan (pier) and just stare the sun as it goes up and listen to the waves splashing in the background (Merida-wait for me.. I’ll be there one day).  Then later I discovered swimming and began to love it.  There is something in the water that keeps me at peace and I can mostly enjoy the long distance swim and feel satisfied about life.  When I was still in the Army, it was the morning 3mile run that keeps me away from all the stress.  Then there was this longing of financial stability.  A few years back, me and my wife struggles in our finances and honestly we have to really work hard to get something or buy something and then we argue.  I remember the days when my term in Army was almost at the end and I have to transition to civilian life.  There were so many questions in my mind.  Where is the job? Where shall I start looking?  Where to raise our kids?  I still have a few questions in life that are left unanswered but I am not worried about it anymore.  I still have my day to day struggles but those don’t bother me anymore.

I know that I am not alone in my situation.  I’ve read it in FB all the time. People are not satisfied.  People are longing for something. People are searching. People are seeking something.  I am aware that people sometimes don’t really need to hear any advice or counsel. I don’t have a degree in psychology and I never went to a seminary or Bible college and all I have is a real life experience daily and I want to share this to all my friends (known and unknown) that there is a way to satisfy our soul and it is not in the physical realm (the things I mentioned above).  There is a spirit realm, we don’t see it but if you observe your surroundings, find time to feel it and open your spiritual eyes … then you will begin to see and experience it.

Yesterday, while I was driving with Brent for his tennis practice, we saw an accident that was about to happen.  The light was yellow and there were 2 cars trying to beat the yellow light (50mph) and then the oncoming traffic was also trying to beat the yellow light but the problem was he was turning left.  I slowed down because I saw the caution light (me sometimes) and then we heard a very loud braking noise (tire squeak) but fortunately we did not hear a loud bang.  To me, something happened in the spirit realm in that particular moment (a spiritual intervention).  I’ve been in so many similar situations like that and somehow, there is always that protection over me.  They said that there are angels out there protecting us. Last night, I am 100% sure they were there to protect us.

Step1 in Soul Satisfaction:
1. Start a personal relationship to God through Christ. Everything you do, just talk to Him.  Kinda’ funny at first but you will get used to it.  Use Him to guide you in your daily life, at work, relationship, job search etc.

It’s been a week now since I launch my Log Parser study.  I am learning slowly but the results are very promising.  I have not fully comprehend the mechanism of the tool but the potential is there.  Imagine troubleshooting a computer problem by just performing a remote query from one console and it gives you all the details in one tabulated result.  I’ve put together some of the examples that I’ve tested and it really works.  Imagine a search engine on any log files or any event logs from different client pc.  More on this later but here’s the SQL Queries that I am testing.

At work, I will only speak when there is a good reason for me to open my mouth (most of my close friends knows).  In short I am really trying hard to live as low as I can so that people will not get annoyed by what I talk about.  But as you read this journal, the opposite is happening.  It seems like I am always talking about my faith, The Word and The Walk.  Believe me, I don’t like to write anything on this journal, to me it is all “just words” and I don’t even know if people are getting blessed or encouraged by it’s message.  But then once in a while, out of nowhere, a stranger will email me or make a comment that he/she was blessed by what I wrote one day.  Many times I am trying to shutdown my way journaling and just go back to my secret journal and let people read it when I am dead but then what purpose will it serve if the things I write is not read in real time.

Back to the subject, “More walk but less talk”, I feel that the message is very simple, walk with God 24/7.  In all our actions, walk with Him.  I know that this is hard because we are still living in this worldly environment and there are always temptations around us.  I am always tempted but then when I am walking with Him, I will realize right away that I need to get back into the right track.  Once you walked with Him closely, then you have something to report about and then you can talk. So on the same note, walk with the Light, then later talk about the Light.

Side note: Today’s Word seems like paralleled to what LEAN called “Walking the Gemba”

0. Moving Forward-The Church (my notes)

The Church was birthed out of His death. (Christ’s death)
The Church was placed into our hands. (Our responsibility)
The Church is called to face the world. (Our ministry)
The Church is satan’s enemy.( People[initially] hates Christ, the Church and Christians, they don’t want to hear anything about the Good news)
The Church contains God’s Power
Who/What is the Church? You and me. Not the building, not the place of worship nor the organized religion. It’s the people that truly believed in Him. It is us.

Bountiful Eye; Day312

Pro 22:9  He who has a bountiful eye shall be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the poor. [II Cor. 9:6-10.]
Matthew Henry’s Commentary
Here is, 1. The description of a charitable man; he has a bountiful eye, opposed to the evil eye (Pro_23:6) and the same with the single eye (Mat_6:22), – an eye that seeks out objects of charity, besides those that offer themselves, – an eye that, upon the sight of one in want and misery, affects the heart with compassion, – an eye that with the alms gives a pleasant look, which makes the alms doubly acceptable. He has also a liberal hand: He gives of his bread to those that need – his bread, the bread appointed for his own eating. He will rather abridge himself than see the poor perish for want; yet he does not give all his bread, but of his bread; the poor shall have their share with his own family. 2. The blessedness of such a man. The loins of the poor will bless them, all about him will speak well of him, and God himself will bless him, in answer to many a good prayer put up for him, and he shall be blessed.
