1 Stand up straight with your shoulders straight
2 Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping
3 Befriend people who want the best for you
4 Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not the useless person you are today

6 Set your house in order before you criticize the world
7 Pursue what is meaningful, not what is expedient
8 Tell the truth. Or at least don’t lie
9 Assume the person you are listening to knows something you don’t
10 Be precise in your speech
11 Do not bother children while they are skateboarding
12 Pet a cat when you encounter one in the street

1 Stop doing the wrong things
2 Make a schedule
3 Clarify your thoughts
4 Take the meaningful paths
5 Specify your goals
6 Stop saying things that makes you weak

Sermon on the Mount Matthew 5-11
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Formula: Rational Thinking

Rationality is the quality or state of being reasonable, based on facts or reason. Rationality implies the conformity of one’s beliefs with one’s reasons to believe, or of one’s actions with one’s reasons for action.

Rational thought is thinking that is logically structured and which takes into account established fact. I agree with Hume in believing that most human cognition is motivated by passion and emotion, but it can be constrained by the canons of logic and the careful weighing and integrations of facts.

Bounded rationality is the idea that in decision-making, rationality of individuals is limited by the information they have, the cognitive limitations of their minds, and the finite amount of time they have to make a decision.

Cognition-the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses

BR=Bounded Rationality

CL=Cognitive Limitation

eudaimonia and motivation

“eudaimonia-refers to a state of having a good indwelling spirit or being in a contented state of being healthy, happy and prosperous”.

Why do people hurt other people?  A simple question with a simple answer – but to really know the real answer, it will take a deeper investigation into the theories of beliefs, desires, emotions and motivation.

We are always looking for something better.
Seldom in life that we look for darkness. Seldom in life that we look for a disease.  Seldom in life that we look for unpleasant things.  Seldom in life that we desire hate.  Seldom in life that we desire nothingness.  Seldom in life that we desire discomfort.  Seldom in life that we desire war or violence.

But when we see  or experience something unnatural [hurt or crisis]– we sometimes ask these questions:
1. Why did we choose darkness over excellence?
2. Why did we choose discomfort over a nice bed?
3. Why did we choose hatred over love and affection?
4. Why did we choose the undesirable over normal wants?
5. Why did we choose disagreement over unity?
6. Why did we choose infidelity over honor?
7. Why did we choose sadness over joy?

Finding answers.
Some of us will climb a mountain to find the feeling of exhilaration and sense of accomplishment.  Some moves out away from the city to find stillness and peace.  Some goes into a life long retreat to recreate the inner being.  Some renounce technology and goes back to the basics of life which is just food, clothing and shelter .  To some, they cheat their spouse or partner to find happiness with another creature.  To some, they turn to alcohol and drugs to taste ecstasy and temporary state of being happy. To some, they lock their door [physical and emotional] to get away from everyone.  To some, they listen to heartwarming and inspirational music to soothe the troubled mind.

Lately, I took a long and boring journey into the pages of these books and found some answers.

Strength of Valence: V=f(A x P)

After my 2.4mile swim today, I had two choices for recovery: Read/Study Powershell4.0 or Read a Psychology book.  The outcome is shown below.  Powershell can wait.  I’ll do it at work with actual examples.

Lately, I’ve been doing a research on how people starts a relationship and came across a book called Handbook of Relationship Initiation.  It’s a broad subject,  Chapter 1 is covering the model of romantic encounter [see flowchart below] and how the Is and the Os starts out a relationship.  I = being the initiator and O=being the Other/person being pursued.  I won’t elaborate more because I’m not an expert on the subject.  You can study the flowchart yourself and synthesize the process so that you can gain an upper hand in your pursuit of a relationship [success rate].  Please note and be forewarned that this flowchart is intended for “SINGLE” individuals “”only””- those who are seeking a fresh relationship.

If you are married or reserved in advance, stay away and read this article instead:  What Makes Romance So Romantic (and So Doomed)?  [Seltzer 2015] . I had been searching for an explanation of why people who were so romantic and crazy in love becomes the worst enemies later in the long term relationship. The article I mentioned explained the psychodynamics of romantic love and it’s transition to the stage of commitment and why the romantic well dries out.  I did not know that romance is just a temporary thing.  Enjoy it while it’s there.

Now I know! I’ll stop looking for answers from now on.

QotD001: Close Friends 20180404
I don’t have a lot of friends in general but I do find an effort to make friends with someone I don’t know much.  Friendship is a relationship so the criteria for reciprocity must be there. Connections is also a must..but not just verbal or proximity but rather invisible forms such as likes, quietness index, reserve index (not too aggressive) and above all honest. In my list are these people. LF/PN/TN/AM/MW

QotD002: Broken a Heart 20180405
Everyone has a story to tell regarding this type of life event.  I want to mention the year it happened to be specific but I know that the audience perception will be different because I’m sure you have not existed yet, it’s not imaginable.  So let’s just say it happened long time ago.  After a heartbreak 1 (you have to learn the codes eventually and you will get it one way or another)…there was a long famine in the land, it will take years for the lack of no food and water and the heart becomes as hard as the rock.  Then one day, a person comes to life, crosses my pathway and then realize this might be the forthcoming event that I’ve been waiting for.  It all started with a gaze then a smile then a gaze then more smile and the next thing you know you are connected to each other in some invisible connection that you think life on earth is so beautiful and eternal.  As the year passes by and then more years came, the spark once we had together starts to fade and the connection started to loose it’s momentum…i wanted the other party to notice but the person is blinded by what we’ve shared together and ignored the warnings of a faded love…the other person continue on the long eroded connection. Then out of the blue, another person comes to life and became 3, then 4 etc.  By the time i realize that I am suppose to delete a few # before i can climb another mountain, i pretended that i did but in reality, they still existed.  It’s hard to imagine to discard a very precious gift at one moment in life because there was another one that came around. It was a horrible act and if ever I have to go through that path again, I’m sure I will choose a better way of handling the situation.  Even up to this day, no contact to 2.  But we grow up so quickly and learn to forget things, but not just so sure if the other party had forgotten.  I can’t change what happened but sure I’ve told this story to some so that one day at my funeral a person can look for 2 and say that I am truly sorry.

Exhortation Is Not = Mercy

A few months ago, I completed  Riso’s book called /enneagram-personality-types/ . I never understood why I scored very low as Type2-Helper during the personality test. In fact, I scored the lowest. Just go to the entry that I mentioned to fully understand personality types.  There is also a spreadsheet notes that I collected that you can download for your own use.

Yesterday,  a level 1.8 friend told me something that really bothered me.  The conversation was just so passing because I have to attend to another urgent task.  This person told me about “the crying in the bathroom at work”.  When I got home last night, I sat in front of my computer and contemplate and then look up DSM-5  and see what I missed on this person [I was just curious].  This person looked happy, sweet, soft spoken, gentle, knows boundary a lot,  normal, content, lively, full of smile, loves to work, very hardworking, always doing something for work, comes to work on time,  has a lot of friends, has a nice job, has a fiancée and waiting to be married soon.  From my perspective, has a GAF Score of 90 [GAF info here] .

This morning, I found the answer why I am not Type-2.  http://www.spiritualgiftstest.com/spiritual-gifts

Exhortation
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

Notes: Anxiety = Importance x Uncertainty x Powerlessness

I would like to share the following simple formula to deal with anxiety from Steven Stosny’s youtube presentation.  View the presentation here. It’s not magic! It’s somewhat mathematical. I took time taking notes because I really wanted to find out what is the true formula for anxiety [if there is].  I’ve been dealing with anxiety for a while now and for some reason, anxiety is always present in life no matter what the event or situation is.  Lately, I’ve been helping someone coping with a tragic event in life and I have no positive words to say because I have no idea on how to handle the situation [at first].  All I have was empathy, the “I’m with you stuff”.    Later on, I’ve found out the it was all “powerlessness” – “I do not know what to do”… which produces the anxiety.

I was skeptic at first about the formula but then when I synthesized his theory, plugged in some examples and number – the formula started to make sense.  I challenged you to test the formula and see if it has merits in your situation.  Here’s how I made the formula works for me.

Formula of Anxiety
Anxiety = Importance x Uncertainty x Powerlessness

Let:
Anxiety = 1000 [at the highest level]
Importance = 0-10 [0 at the lowest value]
Uncertainty = 0-10
Powerlessness = 0-10
Anxiety = 10 x 10 x 10

“If any of the variables – Importance, Uncertainty and Powerlessness is close to zero or equal to zero, the value of anxiety becomes irrelevant.”

Examples:
#1-My heart attack at age 42 [2008], “I might die”
Importance = 10
Uncertainty = 10
Powerlessness = 0, I can ride my bike for 5 hours on every weekend.
Anxiety = 0

#2-Subsurface swim – a 25 yards underwater swim with one breath at the end, “I might drown”
Importance = 10
Uncertainty = 10
Powerlessness = 0, I can do the routines over and over as a warm up of my long distance swim workout
Anxiety = 0

#3-50-Mile Bike Safety – “I might die being hit by a car while cycling”
Importance = 1, if I die, my wife and kids will get my life insurance plus they can enjoy my 401k without penalty.
Uncertainty = 10
Powerlessness = 1, I’ve been cycling for >10 years and I know what to do in the road.
Anxiety = 10

#4-My retirement money invested in one fund only and JAGLX  will lose value overtime, “I might lose all my retirement funds”
Importance = 10
Uncertainty = 2, if the market crashes, all stocks will go down as well.  The market trend is always trending upward since the beginning of the financial market. Market Index Chart
Powerlessness = 10, I have no control of the stock market.  If I hide my money under my bed, it will not grow.
Anxiety = 200

#5-I’m overwhelmed at work with so many projects and not much time to work on, “I might lose my job”
Importance = 10
Uncertainty = 2
Powerlessness = 1, I know what to do, I just need to spend more time on every project and task.
Anxiety = 20

#6-My marriage is emotionless and dry, “I’m worried that the 25 years of marriage will eventually fail”
Importance = 0, it’s not important, I know my “core values” by heart.  I’ll deal with it when I get in the water.
Uncertainty = 10
Powerlessness = 10
Anxiety = 0

Enjoy!

Notes from the video:

Anxiety
1. They are not  reality
2. They are signals about a “possible reality”
3. They are calibrated to give “false positive”

General Rules:
1. Check out the alarm
2. Don’t assume that it is accurate
3. It only signals “caution” – not danger

Anxiety Fear
Possible change that may cause unpleasantness, failure, or loss Possibility of harm
About your capabilities, skills, talent, lovability Danger in environment
Mental-largely in your head Visceral-felt in the body
Entirely self-regulated, you have control Involuntary-hard to regulate
Inaccurate-rest in possibility rather than probability Fairly accurate

3 Types of Anxiety
1. Temperamental – emotional tone
2. Situational – particular situation, example: test or public speaking
3. Symptomatic – of something else. example: depletion of physical resources such as being tired, hungry or sick, emotional disorder, stress

Characteristics of Anxiety
1. Scanning – difficult to focus, you are panning the horizon, taking lots of information.
2. Thought racing – unrealistic, antidote is writing down what you are thinking to slow down your thoughts
3. Self-consciousness – “I might be judged”; “they are looking at me”
4. Vigilance – judging others, looking for negatives

Anxiety – is the first level of alarm
Fear – the major level of alarm

Beneficial Anxiety
1. A signal for caution: “be careful”
2. Self acceptance – too self critical
3. Self Care – need to sleep, need to eat well, need to exercise, need to practice self compassion
4. Relationship repair

Problem Anxiety
1. All signals mean that something bad will happen:
2. I won’t be able to cope with it
3. The cost of coping will be too great

Anxiety Plus Impulse Control
1. anxious people are controlling
2. try to avoid feeling of “out of control”
3. attempting to regulate anxiety by trying to get the environment stimulating
4. external regulation of emotion never works –> it increases vigilance

Anxiety and Blame = Anger and Resentment
Something bad will happen and it is your fault
Blame temporarily empowers against anxiety with amphetamine – stimulant [adrenalin or cortisol]
Blame kills = chronic resentment = powerlessness = life sucks = depression [delete blaming entirely in your life]

Regulating Anxiety
1. Ask yourself how important is it?
2. How relevant is it to my core values?  Happiness, Joy, Peace
3. How important is it to my growth? Happiness?
4. Reduce the “unknowns” by learning more.
5. Understand other perspectives.
6. Increase the ability to cope by developing  contingency plans.
7. Decide what to do at worst case scenario.

Regulating the urge to control anxiety
Control is within you
1. Resiliency
2. Adaptability
3. Tolerance
4. Problem solving
5. Core values

Anxiety and Core Values; Focus on Core Values
1. What is most important to you?
2. What you most wanted to build?
3. What value you most wanted to create in life?
4. What you most appreciate?

Soothing Anxiety
1. Self-consciousness – focus on small positive qualities of others [smile]
2. Vigilance – appreciate the core values of other people [notice them]
3. Impulse to scan – focus on details [mindfulness]
4. Slow down thought racing – give an anxious thought an answer that mobilizes solution and improvement
5. Recognize that unpleasant feelings are temporary
6. Recognize that pain and unpleasant emotions are major organizers of recall [what we remembers]

”when you are in pain, you cannot recall ever not having been in pain”
pain = memory of pain

state dependent recall – we can only remember the state we are in when we are in pain
when anxious, you can’t recall a different emotional state/pain
recognizing this trick of memory regulates anxiety
anxious thought – I’ve always felt bad and always will
regulation – this bad feeling will pass, they can’t last
train your brain a new habit to regulate emotion
convert possibility thinking to probability action
anxiety is about possibility – something bad might happen
how likely it is to happen?
it requires analysis – slows down racing thoughts – enhances focus – regulates anxiety
”the roof might cave in – possible but not likely

When possibility is assessed
1. Plan what to do to improve / repair
2. Ask – did it happen

Living with temperamental anxiety
1. Understand – most anxiety is metabolic without a psychological meaning
2. Accept – certain level of anxiety is insignificant
3. Nurture –reassure yourself, take care of yourself

Living with an anxious person
1. We are attracted to opposite temperament
2. Lower your anxiety by promoting focus and reduce scanning
3. Show compassion – no malicious intent
4. Compassion lower anxiety
5. Criticism raises anxiety

How to increase anxiety?
1. View each other as opponent
2. Blame each other
3. Criticize

How to lower anxiety
1. View each other as friends and teammates
2. Comfort each other
3. Encourage and reassure

Anxiety and Depression
1. Difficult to know which is primary
2. Anxiety consumes energy – depletes energy
3. Coping capacity – can feel like depression
4. Depression reduces confidence and perceived ability to cope – making you vulnerable – overwhelmed – anxious and then powerless

Anxiety – hyper
Depression – hypo

If anxious / depressed
1. Get a physical exam
2. Walk 30 minutes a day
3. Create value

Anxiety / Depression [Don’ts/Do]
1. Never focus on how bad you feel on how justified you are in feeling bad
2. Never justify the feeling – you have the right to it.
3. Choose between justifying and changing it
4. Never think that emotional validation is a need – no – you don’t need emotional validation. ”You don’t have to validate the smoke alarm, you have to put out the fire”.
5. Focus on what you need to do to get better
6. Become the person you most want to be
7. Staying true to your deepest value
8. Self-care
9. Core value – is the way to regulate Related post: Core Value
10. Reassure self and loved one.

Notes: “Core Value”

Core Value Summary [from Steven Stosny’s Webinar]

I was at the hospital the other day for my sister’s lumpectomy and I have to wait for 2.5 hours.  I end up sitting at St David’s cafeteria  with my field notes and iphone listening to youtube on this webinar and taking notes.  Lately, I finished the book “Living and Loving after Betrayal” by Stosny and I’m re-reading a few chapters for note taking.  I found this particular chapter interesting and decided to spend time on the subject.

Some people are [lazy], don’t have time and don’t want to go through all the materials and would rather just have the summary, so for those people, here’s the summary.  It’s not perfect but I think I captured 90.1% of the materials discussed in the video.

Chapter 5, p57 is the core value chapter if you have the book.

Why I’m reading this book?

No, I don’t have a need for this book.  It’s just a hobby – to know stuff.  The book is not really about betrayal and recovery, I think the title should be like “Strengthening Bonds”, or “Emotional Well Being” or “Formula for Happiness and Beyond” etc.

Your action items:
1. Watch the 20 min video [yes, it’s boring but informative]
2. Read the notes below
3. Perform a core value assessment using the excel file below

Core Value Assessment.xlsx

What makes life worth living?
Good health
Emotional well being
Self-Regulation (acting in your long term interest0
Sense of meaning and purpose
Relationship harmony
Love
Compassion
Spirituality
Appreciation of natural and creative beauty

What makes these things possible?
How to attain them?
How to keep them?

To create value is to be true to that values that you create
To value someone or something is to hold that person/thing as important and worthy of
appreciation
time
effort
sacrifice

To value something = appreciation + time + effort + sacrifice
Emotional well being = Valuing/Devaluing [divided by]
Emotional well being depends on valuing more than we devalue
If you value more than devalue = life is good even when in adversity [no material things]
If you devalue more than value = life is bad even when everything is good [has money, possession etc]
Focus more on valuing than devalue
We feel authentic when we are true to our deepest values [genuine]
We feel numb when we are indifferent to our values
We feel guilt and shame when we violate our values
We feel meaningless when we are out of touch in our values
Deeper values = more meaning and purpose
Shallow values = less meaning and purpose
Core values = we seek to value and we seek to be valued
When people are to choose between food, comfort and love, we choose love first
Core values – are in the sub-conscious level, larger than self, we are alive
Core values – activates the power of motivation
To Improve
To Appreciate
To Connect
To Protect

Formula:
Core Value = Improve + Appreciate + Connect + Protect
We never lose our core values, we only lose touch of it [lost awareness]
Core value is "the will to live"
When we lost the will to live, the fix is to get to know back our core values
When detached from Core Values, we experience: [these are the symptoms]
Protective emotions [anger and resentment]
Defensive behavior [aggression and withdrawal]
Insulating moods [brooding and depression]
Vigilant Moods [anxiety and agitation]
Addiction Behavior [compulsive behavior]

How to get in touch with core values?
Core Values is  invincible, non-negotiable, within you
Core Values is  untouchable by external world, no event/behavior of others can lower your core value
Core Values is  regulated entirely by your own behavior and not by the behavior of others
Behavior of others are  reflections of their current core values
Example: Someone being rude to you.  It is not your fault, it is not your core value, it is the core value of the person who is rude that is being displayed.

Core value is non-negotiable. Never at stake in any kind of interaction with others
Core value is a place within you, inside you
Core value pours out from you, not into you
Core value solid foundation lies within you
Core value is an inviolable place [cannot be violated]
Core value is a strength and renewal place within you
Core value does not need defenses

Defensiveness is trying to prove your value to someone else
You know that you are valuable
You know that you are worthy of love because you can feel compassion
Negative thoughts are turned into motivation to improve, to appreciate, to connect and to protect to strengthen your own core values
You can feel sadness, grief, disappointment and loss but you can never be unlovable or inadequate when you are in touch of your core values
Feeling of unlovable and inadequacy can be self-regulated by improving core values
Natural human emotions = i’m sad, disappointment; but I can add value to my life by improving my core values [focusing on it]
Other people can make you feel loved but they cannot make you "worthy of love"
Focus on making yourself "worthy of love"
Focus on making yourself "lovable"
Don’t focus on getting love, focus on being lovable
Getting in touch of your core value is the greatest thing you can do for your families or partner

Relationship Repair
Repairing Relationships = hold on to your core values under stress and you will have a chance to repair your broken relationship
Be loving and be compassionate to your self first
Heal yourself first before taking steps to repair the relationship.
Healing starts in improving your core values.

Notes and Transcripts: Well Being; Relationships; Love; Infidelity; Shame; Vulnerability

I normally listen to music during my long distance bike ride which normally lasts around 4 hours on Saturdays.  Lately, I found some good and interesting subjects to listen to at TED Talks and started listening to a few talks in the subject of Psychology and Love during my ride.  The 20-minute segment distracts my mind from boredom while I’m pedaling and struggling on a climb.  Other times, it helps me forget what Mile40 feels like when my electrolytes are low and my focus and reflexes on the bike declined.

These are the 7 Talks that intrigued me.  I downloaded the transcripts and made some bookmarks for ease of studying if you want to dig deeper on the subject.  I found out that reading the transcripts helped me understand better.

If you don’t have the time to listen to the audio/video, reading the transcripts below will do just fine [I think even better].  Enjoy and may you have a joyful life and a lasting romantic love.

1. Esther Perel: The secret to desire in a long-term relationship
2. Esther Perel: Rethinking infidelity … a talk for anyone who has ever loved
3. Helen Fisher: Why we love, why we cheat
4. Helen Fisher: The brain in love
5. Brené Brown: Listening to shame
6. Brené Brown: The power of vulnerability
7. Daniel Kahneman: The riddle of experience vs. memory

Q&A:
Q1. How many people travelling? Ans. 4
Q2. Will you do it again? Ans. No, this is a once in a lifetime experience.
Q3. Will you recommend this vacation to friends and family? Ans. Absolutely.
Q4. Is the cost worth it? Ans. Absolutely, every penny.
Q5. Are the land excursions necessary? Ans. Yes, because it is an organized tour and you have a tour guide to tell you important information regarding the place.
Q6. Is this trip suitable for younger children? Ans. No, because they don’t have the full concept of world history and will not enjoy looking at “historic” places.  Also, there are a lot of walking everyday.
Q7. Can I travel alone? Ans. Yes, but you won’t have anybody to share with your daily experiences.  Travel with your spouse and grown up children.
Q8. Shall I wait for my retirement to visit Europe? Ans. You can, but make sure you are still physically fit to walk so many miles per day during the land excursions.
Q9. Will you travel to Europe again? Ans. Yes, but not on a cruise ship.
Q10. Is vacation planning and organizing really needed? Ans. Yes, if you want peace of mind.  This vacation really went well because we spent time planning and organizing it.

Kudos to my loving wife [Britta] for organizing and booking the trip.

Lessons Learned/Recommendations:
1. Plan the vacation ahead of time, suggesting 10-12 months planning to save money for the vacation.
2. Book the cruise ticket 3 months prior. Use the Norwegian Cruise Line website
3. Book the plane ticket 3 months prior. Use Expedia.com
4. Book the hotel room 3 months prior.
5. Book the excursion trips 2 months prior [don’t try to save money, you will need to have a land excursion or else it will be hard for you to get one on every port]
6. Get an International data roaming plan. [the roaming data plan was useful in google maps, without it, it’s hard to navigate international cities]
7. Bring a laptop to download/store/organize your pictures daily.
8. Bring a dSLR camera.  The smartphone camera is not good enough for quick and fast shots.
9. Buy/Bring a European Style convenience outlet adapter. European Outlet
10. Buy/Bring a multiple ac outlet converter if you are traveling with families. Wall Station Outlet/Charging
11. Pack for 10 days only.  Don’t over/under pack.
12. Use Google Picasa application to organize your picture daily. [I repeat, do the photo organizing daily]
13. Create a picture folder in your computer in advance to store your pictures. Use the folder naming convention and script below.
14. Put your smartphone on “Airplane Mode” when at sea.
15. Bring a cycling shorts, running shoes and dri-fit shirts.
16. Workout everyday after each land excursions right before dinner.
17. Bring a handy earbud/headphone.
18. Setup Spotify for Offline Playlist.
19. Book a stateroom with “balcony”.  It’s nice to watch the horizon in your private balcony or reading a book and listening to music.
20. Book “ultimate dining”, it’s a little expensive but plenty of dinner choices every night.

Converting Freeplane Mindmap To MSWord Multilevel Bulleted List

I’ve been using the Freeplane Mindmapping Software for a while now and it has been a big help in organizing my notes/thoughts/ideas.  At work, I’ve collected many documents, HowTos, troubleshooting notes in Freeplane, a shortcoming of Freeplane is creating a formalized multilevel bulleted list to be used as an official document for the entire company or department with Headers, Footers and cover page etc.

At first, it was not easy – but after doing some reading and testing, I finally able to create a Microsoft Word Document bulleted list with ease.

Tools Needed:
1. MS Word [I am using Word 2013]
2. A “tab indented text”

Files/Links:
StagesOfChange-BulletedListDemo.pdf
StagesOfChange-BulletedListDemo.docx
Mindmap-6StagesOfChange.mm
http://www.freeplane.org

Step By Step
1. Paste any “tab indented text” to MSWord [see sample text below]
2. Select All text
3. In the Home Menu, Paragraph, Line Paragraph Spacing, Click Remove Space After Paragraph
4. In the Home Menu, Paragraph, Multi Level List, Select the Multi Level List with 1—,1.1—, 1.1.1—
5. In the Home Menu, Paragraph, Multilevel List, Click Define New Multi Level List
6. Follow the screenshots below to configure Level1, Level 2 and Level 3 List

image

7. In the Home Menu, Under Styles, Right Click Heading1,2,3,4 and Click Modify, modify to your liking. [one at a time]
8. In the View Menu, Check the Navigation Pane Check box to show the navigation pane.
9. Click File Save and Save the MSWord Document
10. Click File SaveAs, Select the PDF as SaveAs Type
11. In the PDF Options, Select Create Bookmarks Using: Headings
12. Click OK.
13. Open the PDF File, now you have created a a PDF file from MS Word with Bookmarks for easy viewing.
14. End

Everlasting Light

I have a 20-minute commute to work and in that 20 minutes, sometimes I cried in prayer telling God to use me in a very very very special way. Somehow I think that my life is not fruitful enough since my new life started 20 years ago.  That prayer [i think] is answered in many ways lately..

It’s been a few weeks now that I’ve been trying to undo one of my life big projects “Zero Social Contact”. And so I opened up my life to people and tried to connect [real people and not fb or anything social media]. There’s a brewing friendship in my life lately in which I felt discomfort because I’ve been put through daring questions about how I do things, why I do things and sometimes I am not able to give a straight answer and so I made up an answer close to the question and doing so, more question arises in our conversation.

Fast forward >> Then our conversation led me to expose my faith [accidentally].  There was a question about “how come you and your cousin are so different”. Then I told this friend that “we should not be different”. I explained that both of us are “born again Christians” and with the same faith, reading the same Bible, we should be the same.  I added “we should have the same Spirit in us”.  I have to extract myself from the conversation since I felt that the moment is not there yet for this type of topic to be discussed.

I used to be unaware of why people disliked religion.  Maturity brings wisdom – I’ve learned about emotional, physical, material and spiritual boundaries.  Many people when they encounter Christians, they tend to run away from this type of friendship because early on, they draw the line – “hey I’m a believer and you are not”.

This morning I woke up with a question: “How can I explain to someone who does not believe in the existence of God?’’  Two answers came to mind.
1. “Pascal Wager”
2. “Everlasting Light” mentioned in Isaiah 60.

19 The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. 20 Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself; for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your days of mourning shall be ended. "A Million Suns"

You stand eternal
The uncreated One
Who knows no end

The starry wonders
The vast expanses
Bound to Your command

You shine like a million suns ablaze
Wrapped in eternal light and praise
Jesus the First, the Last
The Bright, the Morning Star

You spoke creation
Into existence
Life and all we are

Beyond all measure
The universe
An echo of Your power

You shine like a million suns ablaze
Wrapped in eternal light and praise
Jesus the First, the Last
The Bright, the Morning Star
[x2]

Everlasting
Never ending
You will reign forevermore
You are holy
You are worthy
Lord of all

Wrapped in eternal light and praise

… the one who showed Mercy

Sometimes I refused to care.

Part of me sometimes sees adversity as a part of life and each one should figure out what to do when an adversity comes.  Many times in my life I end up being placed in a situation that requires my help.  Many times I wondered if I responded with mercy and care.  Lately, I came across the comparison/explanation between empathy and sympathy, here’s the clear explanation.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Evwgu369Jw]

4 Qualities of Empathy
1. Perspective taking-the ability to take the perspective of another person
2. Staying out judgment-non-judgmental
3. Recognizing emotion-ability to recognize/acknowledge the emotion of the other person
4. Communicating emotion-ability to reciprocate the emotion

Empathy [feels connection]

Sympathy [drives disconnection]

Empathy is a choice Sympathy is just a response
“I’m feeling with you” “I see you suffering”
“I know what its like” “Oh, its bad huh, do you need anything?”
“I don’t know what to say” At least you still have ….
“I’ve been there, I feel for you” “I’ve been there, let me know how you survive”
“Tell me more” “Really!, I got to go.  Update me with your progress”
“I’m here with you all the way” “Please let me know if you need anything”

I found a good “empathy” example in the Bible – “The one who showed mercy”

The Parable of the Good Samaritan
25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” 29But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35And the next day he took out two denari and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ 36Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”

May 7, 2015, Thursday
Must Do List:
1. Meet Oncologist, Dr. Darren M. Kocs, MD
– He explained 6mm, 7cm fn [I was wrong in imagining 7cm.  It is a linear distance from nipple and not the diameter of the affected area.
– He explained stages of cancer, Stages 1,2,3,4 [4 highest and deadly and nothing you can do but make life comfortable]
– He explained our case is tentatively at Stage 1 based on the initial screening and biopsy.
– He won’t be able to declare stage# until after surgery which they will do during the surgery, the procedure is they will inject a radioactive ink to the cancer cell area and to find the main lymph node, the main lymph node is the subject of biopsy per medical guidelines and previous findings.  [Read more…]
– He said that breast cancer is 90% random and 10% genetics. “Patient did not cause the cancer theory”.
– Genetic testing will be done today called BRCA testing.  This will determine if the case on hand is genetics. [Read more about BRCA]
– Treatment with positive BRCA = Lumpectomy+Radiation OR Mastectomy, for this case the two choices are equal.  Some “super paranoid” patient will opt out for Mastectomy for peace of mind. [Read about myopic loss aversion]  and replace “investing” with “health”.  We are afraid to lose “in the future”. We are afraid to get sick in the future “so we go for Mastectomy” even if the chance is 50/50.
– Patient told Dr. Kocs about the month long vacation starting this May 10th, Sunday. He explained it’s ok to go on vacation for a month. A 6mm cancer will not exponentially grow in 30 days.  Also the BRCA test will take two weeks.
– He asked if there is a need for anti depressant to the patient. Patient said yes and prescribed [Xanax], an anti depressant.

2. Brainstorming in the lobby
– Patient will continue the month long vacation
– Patient will keep the extra car payment [reason still unknown to caveman, I don’t want to speculate. but…]
– Patient will pickup stuff at my house to execute final package
– Patient will call BRCA office to authorize auto approval if testing cost exceeds $100.00 per warning of the office nurse.

3. Patient at Costo with wife
– Patient now smiling a little bit.  Still processing all the good and bad news firing in all direction in both emotional and physical realm.

4. Dinner with Patient and my wife at PF Chang Chinese restaurant.
– Observation of patient – is now smiling a little bit.  GAF score I think is 70 [Read more about GAF Scoring]
– Discussed treatment options. No decisions made yet.
– Discussed emotional treatment, need to build emotional strength to stand alone and send a message to the world that the losses are only a small percentage of the whole life.
– Discussed my Age 42 Heart Attack and patients Age 42 Cancer diagnosis.

5. Post dinner session
– Drop off Xanax prescription to CVS Pharmacy
– Pickup items at the house
– Pickup filled prescription
– Had a long conversation at patient’s house driveway.
– GAF score now around 80 per her determination after reading the GAF Table . See page 9
– Low scores in Psychological – 70 and Ancillary –80 but overall is around 80 ish.  I’m at 90 because I am a cardiac patient.
– Patient is Type1 Personality per my evaluation, her house is very nice and super clean and all perfect and very nice.  Imagine going inside a hotel room, that’s is how I feel upon entering the house.  Outside of the house also resembles “Perfection”, no weeds at all,  it makes my house looks like so “imperfect”.  I shared my point of view on “being perfect”. We don’t need to be.   Personality Test
– My counsel:
a. life is not all perfect, allow things to be imperfect
b. we don’t always get what we want, accept anything in front of you – good or bad
c. letting go mindset, if the event is not actionable, flip to the next page and move on, don’t dwell.

6. I ordered her a cancer guidebook from Livestrong. Cancer Guidebook . I only paid a $5.00 shipping, material was free.

May 8, 2015, Friday
1. Sent patient the Hillsong Acoustic presentation in YouTube [View Video]
2. Sent email

Please do the following:
1. Read one chapter a day and reflect
2. Apply what you learned.
3. Be committed to healthy living [emotionally and physically]. I’m still on Chapter 3 and I kept reading it over and over to truly understand why betrayal hurts so much.
“the greatest revenge is living well.” After intimate betrayal, “living well” means healing, growing, and creating a value-filled life. p35
Living and Loving

May 8, 2015, Saturday
1. Patient texted me with “I’m feeling ok, thanks to Xanax’’”.
2. Googled “Xanax” and learned that it “slows down the movement of chemicals in the brain”. Patient needs CBT, Cognitive Behavior Therapy to go with antidepressant.

Plan:
1. Pickup from home at 0330, May 10th
2. Drop off to Austin Bergstrom Airport
3. One Month vacation until June 6th 2015
4. Pickup Austin Bergstrom Airport on June 7th
5. Resume treatment plan

Notes to TeamCebu:
1. Ensures that patient enjoys vacation. Try to raise the GAF score to 80-90
2. Ensures that the patient does not connect to original cause of problem.  Delete means delete, zero effort, zero contact.  Be aware that the “source” is in town.
3. Let the patient know that she is not alone on this

Milestone: Day000-Perdify

Sad day marker.

Did You rise the sun for me?

"Always"
Hillsong

Did You rise the sun for me?
Or paint a million stars that I might
Know Your majesty?
Is Your voice upon the wind?
Is everything I’ve known marked
With my maker’s fingerprints?

Breathe on me
Let me see Your face
Ever I will seek You

[Chorus:]
‘Cause all You are, is all I want, always
You draw me close in Your arms
Oh God, I wanna be with You

Can I feel You in the rain?
Abandon all I am to have You
Capture me again
Let the earth resound with praise
Can You hear as all creation lives
To glorify one name?

Did You make my heart beat?
Did You heal my broken heart?
Did You fix my chaotic thinking?
Did You make my pain go away?
Did You make my worries disappear?
Did You fill my bank with resources for the future?
Did You give me the inspiration to go on?
Did You just whispers to my numb emotion to stand up and face the hardship?
Did You tell those new people to come near me?
Did You come up with the brilliant idea that I had today?
Did You???

Endless Love …

1. a product that can endure and aren’t fads
2. a history of leaders who can adapt
3. a strong balance sheet
4. a benign competitive environment
5. a track record of innovation balanced by vigilance against taking on too much risk

Stages of Change

I’m currently reading “Making Sense of Change Management” by Cameron and Green and I’m only on page 5 out of 504 .pdf pages.  On the table of contents, the book mentioned the topic  “Stages of Change” and I do not want to skip out to that chapter [book has topic progression]  and so I did some web searching on the side and that is when I stumbled the “transtheoretical model of change”.   Many people had already studied and summarize the subject and there is no need to for me to explain further.

What I’ve learned are the following:
1.  You have to be in Stage 4 to make a change. Yes, be on Stage 4 if you want to change something.
2.  You cannot skip a stage.
3.  Sometimes, you have to go back to Stage 2.
4. Most failures happens on Stage 2, the contemplation stage.  Sometimes we are stuck on this stage forever.

Mindmap-6StagesOfChange.html

Example:
”I want to know, understand, apply, analyze and evaluate the stages of change”

1. ”I do not know anything about “stages of change”
2. “I’ve read on this blog the “stages of change”
3. “I’m going to bookmark this article for later reading”
4. “I’m reading the stages of change”
5. “I know and understand the stages of change”
6. “I’m going to apply to my life and work the stages of change”

Positive Pairing: 8 Ingredients (Pp) Mathematical Formula

I still think that my time in this world is very short because of my stent #2.  For the past 3 years now, I had been building my core team at home [my family] from scratch.  It has been fun to watch each member of the family grows as a person.  Today, I found one word which define what I’m currently doing – “autonomous training”, see ingredient #1 below.

autonomy-the capacity of a system to make its own decisions about its actions; Personal independence

Positive Pairing Mathematical Formula:
Pp
=( 1 ) (  2 )  ( 3 ) ( 4 ) ( 5 ) ( 6 )  ( 8) ( 7 ) ( 8 )

Pp=0, you are not positively paired with your spouse, partner, friend, team, small group [don’t hit the delete button yet, instead, work on restoring the missing ingredient.]

Pp=>1, you are good to go, you will last a lifetime

"Positive Pairing" Ingredients By Satir 1988
1. Each person stands firmly on his or her own feet and is autonomous.
2. Each person can be counted on to say real "yes’s" and "no’s" — in other words, to be emotionally honest.
3. Each person can ask for what she or he wants.
4. Each acknowledges and takes responsibility for her or his actions.
5. Each can keep promises.
6. Each can be counted on to be kind, fun to be around, courteous, considerate, and real.
7. Each takes full freedom to choose to comment on what is going on.
8. Each supports the other’s dreams in whatever way possible. Together, they cooperate instead of competing
.

"The single most crucial factor in love relationships is the feeling of worth each person has for self"

“ positive pairing” – the capacity of each member of the relationship to "stand on their own two feet," being
responsible for self

When a marital relationship is based on a survival pact, where each partner attempts to borrow a sense of self from the mate, difficulties are inevitable. In such a case, Satir illustrated the marital dialogue in this manner: "If I run out of supplies I will take from you. You will have enough, in an emergency, to serve us both" (1967, p. 9). Autonomy is not feasible within such a dysfunctional pact because it threatens the homeostasis of the marital bond. Since the spouses believe that their very survival is dependent on their partner, individuation is seriously hampered.

DIY Personality Test +Mindmap: Book-Enneagram Personality Types

In December of 2013, I went to the local Half Price bookstore in Round Rock to find an investing book to read.  That day, I came home with 3 books:  [all at half price, hey I am frugal investor]
1. 25 Habits of Highly Successful Investors Mindmap-BookSummary-25HabitsOfHighlySuccessfulInvestors
2. The Warren  Buffett Way Mindmap-BookSummary-TheWarrenBuffetWay
3. Personality Types

I finished the first 2 books quickly and summarized my notes and then executed it on my investment portfolio.  I’ve edited my portfolio with the following simple strategy:
1. Indexing S&P and Russell only
2. Minimize # of investment holdings
3. Healthcare and IT
4. Prospect Theory Application
5. Myopic Loss Aversion  Application

The 3rd book was just sitting in my bookshelf unread because it was 544 pages and the first few chapters  were not really interesting.  But then as I continue on reading the #3 book one chapter per day, I realized that it was not that boring at all. After reading the #3 book, I wanted to know my “type” of personality .  I was confused at first because the description of each type seems similar to me.  After a few google search,  I then found an Excel spreadsheet which automates the personality type categorizing, I just have to answer 180 questions.  I edited the spreadsheet and added a few items to make it more of a “one stop” document.

Most of you probably will not read the 544 pages.  If you have the opportunity, please get one yourself and read the full details of each personality types.  For those who cannot and do not have the resources, the spreadsheet mentioned below will give you the path to know your personality types.  There are 180 questions that you have to answer honestly [self-assessment], once you completed answering the questions, go the test results tab and identify your Type #.  Once you know your type #, go to the tab #1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and study the personality description.

Enneagram Test.xls

Step By Step:
1. Save the Excel Spreadsheet to computer.
2. Read instructions.
3. Read questions.
4. Place answer in RATING column.
5. Go to Test Results.
6. Read the description of your personality, Tab 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9
7. Save spreadsheet.
8. Study your Personality Type

Next Step:

Work on getting to the “Healthy” side of your personality. [this is a lifetime of introspection and personal adjustments that you have to do everyday.  I repeat, “ lifetime of change” and not overnight.

2000-2014 Breakthrough, but you did not wait…

"If you’ve been in America for more than five years; if you have children who are American citizens or legal residents;  if you register, pass a criminal background check, and you’re willing to pay your fair share of taxes — you’ll be able to apply to stay in this country temporarily, without fear of deportation. You can come out of the shadows and get right with the law."

President Obama, 20141120, Thursday

Short  version:
1. If you reside in the US for >5 years
2. If you have children who are American citizens or legal residents
3. If you register, pass a criminal background check and pay your fair share of taxes

Love strung out
I am found in the price You paid
I know that Your life
Is the blood running through my veins

My eyes fixed wide on the light of the cross again
I feel the weight drop
In the wake of the empty grave

I want You
I need You
I love You
Jesus
My heart beats forever
Just to know You
Let go and throw my future into Your hands again

Heart beats loud to the sound of a different drum
Calling me out from the crowd to pursue the One

I want You
I need You
I love You
Jesus
My heart beats forever
Just to know You
Let go and throw my future into Your hands again

Break me down till I soar on grace
Lead me on through the fire and rain
The rhythm of my heart beats wild
For Your endless praise
Every waking hour I will seek Your face

SPX Relationship/Effect in % to “Top Performing Funds”

I rebalanced all my portfolio in August 29th 2014 and at that time the market was still at positive momentum.  Later I found out that I lost somewhere around 6% across all my holdings in mid October.  6% is not much when the amount is small but when your portfolio is already big, 6% is not a good number.

I was curious of the actual effect of S&P 500 towards the top performing funds, the results are in Table 1.

dysrationalia

Dysrationalia – "the inability to think and behave rationally despite high intelligence"

Rationalism is a belief that one’s opinions or actions should be based on reason and knowledge rather than emotional responses

A rational person thinks
1. clearly
2. sensibly
3. logically.

rationality is not the same as intelligence.
smart people can do dumb things

two principal causes of dysrationalia

  1. processing problem
  2. content problem

Myside Bias – A common error that occurs with everyday thinking is Myside Bias — the tendency for people to evaluate evidence, generate evidence, and test hypotheses in a manner biased toward their own opinions.

Myopic Loss Aversion

Are you be willing to accept the following offer:
“a 50 percent chance to win $200 and a 50 percent chance to lose $100”.

1. “losses loom larger than corresponding gains”
2. “losses and disadvantages have greater impact on preferences than gains and advantages”
3. “people feel losses more deeply than gains of the same value”
4. “if you look at your investments closely/frequently, you will miss the bigger picture”

NOTES: Restructuring Individual Retirement Account; Rule of 72

I have plenty of spare time now since the house is already empty, 2 kids are already in college and it is just me and my wife for now. My strategy has changed a little bit and I need to reassess my financial strategy.  Me and my wife will be retiring in 10 years or so and would love to do it within 10 years so that I can fulfill my true vocation [it is a secret, don’t ask me].  In order for me to retire from my job, I need to restructure my finances so that I will not have to work hard to fund my retirement projects.

5 Warren Buffett investing don’ts

5 Warren Buffett investing don’ts

No. 1: Don’t let world events affect your investing decisions
Buffett said even if he knew a big war was unavoidable, “I will still be buying stock. You’re going to invest your money in something over time. The one thing you can be sure of is if we went into some very major war, the value of money would go down. … That’s happened in virtually every war that I’m aware of. … The last thing you want to do is hold money during a war. You might want to own a farm, you might want to own an apartment house, you might want to own securities. During World War II, the stock market advanced. The stock market is going to advance over time.”

No. 2: Don’t feel bad when stocks go down
On a day that global stocks markets were reeling from worries that the Ukraine situation could lead to war, Buffett said, “When I got up this morning, I actually looked at a stock on the computer, on the trades in London, that we’re buying and it’s down and I felt good. … We were buying it on Friday and it’s cheaper this morning and that’s good news.” Will he buy more? “Absolutely.”

No. 3: Don’t think you have to be an expert to profit from stock
“The stock market just offers you so many opportunities, thousands and thousands of different businesses. You don’t have to be an expert on every one of them. You don’t need to be an expert on 10 percent of them even. You just have to have some conviction that either a given company, or a group of companies … are likely to make more money five or 10 or 20 years from now than they’re earning now. And that is not a difficult decision to come to.” And if you have no expertise at all, Buffett recommends a low-cost index fund that tracks the S&P 500 ($INX). “Keeping costs to a minimum is enormously important in investing. … If you’re in effect paying out 1 or 2 percent annually of your portfolio, that’s a big, big tax that you don’t have to pay.”

No. 4: Don’t go for the quick profit
Asked if “activist investors” are really acting in the best interests of targeted companies and their shareholders, Buffett replied, “Generally speaking, they are interested in making a quick profit and there’s no law against making quick profits. But our whole attitude in our own business, and what we like to see with the businesses we own stock in, is we want to run them for the people who are going to stay in rather than the people who are going to get out. At any given time, you can make more money, usually, selling the company. … The answer isn’t to sell the company. The answer is to keep running the company well. … I could do certain things to jiggle up the price of Berkshire (BRKB) in the short run. It would not be good for the company over five or 10 years.”

No. 5: Don’t put your money into Bitcoins for the long run
“It’s not a currency. It does not meet the test of a currency. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not around in 10 or 20 years. … It is not a durable means of exchange. It’s not a store of value. … It’s been a speculative — a very speculative — kind of Buck Rogers-type thing, and people buy and sell them because they hope they go up or down just like they did with tulip bulbs a long time ago.”

Simulator-Personal Finance

I came across an investing book last weekend and the author mentioned 3 things that caught my attention.  He said that there are only 3 things you need to keep in mind when you want to attain your financial goals.

1. How long you invest?
2. How much you invest?
3. What rate of return you get on your investments?

I’ve compiled a few spreadsheets to help my financial journey and I would like to share this to my readers.  I did not write a detailed step by step on how to use the spreadsheet but it is not rocket science to follow.

Please share your wealth when you reach your seven figures.  The spreadsheet includes the following:
1. Timeline
2. Budget
3. Age Table
4. Mortgage Calculator
5. Investment Calculator
6. Millionaire Calculator
7. Dollar to Peso converter [PHP]

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/80421698/FundReport-JAGLX-20150228.pdf

The author also mentioned 4 key things in life that is worth examining:
1. Health
2. Wealth
3. Social Life
4. Personal Life

I’m not done with the book yet so I can’t really write a summary.  But even by just contemplating with the 4 items above can yield to a better insight in life.

I’ve deleted #3 a few months to make my life a lot simpler.  Yes, I have no social interaction except the people at work and WordPress [if it counts].

Take the Quiz

Time Personality and Financial Health
    1. A high degree of financial acumen is not a strong predictor of financial health People who perceive themselves as financially literate do not necessarily show a higher degree of financial health
    2. There is a high degree of correlation between a person’s approach to time and their financial health
    3. People who are past oriented (score high on past positive or past negative) are more likely to be financially healthy
    4. People who are excessively present oriented are likely to be financially sick
    5. People who are focused on the future have a high self-perception of financial literacy, but not necessarily a higher degree of financial health.
    6. Millennials think they are less financially literate, but demonstrate better financial health than baby boomers
    7. People in the UK had the highest percentage of financially healthy individuals

blindcaveman version:
    1. Don’t trust your own keen financial insight alone.
    2. Time management = positive financial health. Manage your time = manage your finances.
    3. Learning from past mistakes = positive financial health.
    4. Present oriented = negative financial health.
    5. Future oriented =/ not so positive financial health.
    6. If your date of birth is 1980 or >, you think you are less financially literate but demonstrate better financial health.
    7. People in the US =/ not so positive financial health.

Power to the Powerless

Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.
Even youths shall faint and be weary,and young men shall fall exhausted;
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles
they shall run and not be weary;they shall walk and not faint.
https://www.bible.com/bible/59/isa.40.28-31.esv

I started a new routine everyday after work after my bike or swim workout – right after taking a shower and while drinking my aeropress “light americano coffee” with an Agave sweetener brewed in 1 minute. This must be before 6pm since the half life of coffee is 6 hours .  Sleep time is always 12midnight.

I started reading other blogs from my followers list and those that I followed and then I also searched for a blog that speaks to my heart and then click  “follow”.  One special person each day from the freshly pressed – it’s not a rule but just something that my heart dictates.  I’m not trying to collect ‘blog followers’, I’m just trying to know the hearts of random people.  So please, if you just tuned in, welcome to my journal and please think that you are special – because you are.  I have no hidden agenda of following you.

Yesterday, I was reading a journal of a recently diagnosed cancer patient.  I had teary eyes while reading as the blog not just described the diagnostic procedure but also exposes the feelings that the person experienced in a micro level detail. I am a cardiac patient and I always asked this question to my wife, would you like cancer or heart problems?  Her answer was always “not cancer” and she explained that “hey, you survived” so I should also survive or at least can get to a cardiac cath lab and survive, with cancer, you know it is always there somewhere in your body. I can’t argue.

Me too, I’d rather not have cancer than any other condition. I can read and feel the emotion that a cancer patient goes through but I can never know how difficult it is to even get passed Day0000000001. They can describe the anger, the frustration, the loneliness, the betrayal but there is something in life that you cannot put into words – how the experience affects you emotionally.  It’s an experience that  sometimes you wish does not happen – but it does sometimes. We can tell the story but deep inside us, it’s an individual survival and it does not matter if we have a family around us.

I wrote a short encouraging note on the blog but I don’t really think it was enough to fuel a spark of hope.  Man can always say nice words and encourages you for a  day or two but how do you encourage someone who lies in the deepest sorrow of life and hopelessness.  What word would you offer?

Today’s daily verse from youversion was the perfect answer.

I don’t want to explain too much.  Read the verse above over and over until it soaks in to your spirit. Pay attention of the word “everlasting God” and “power to the faint”.

Be encouraged.  If life ends here today, think of the “everlasting life” because it never ends.

9 Strategic Objectives of the Devil

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. http://bible.com/59/eph6.10-11.esv

NOUN: “scheme-an elaborate plan of action; strategy”
VERB: “scheme-plot something harmful”

I’m familiar with the Full Armor of God but when I thought about the “schemes of the devil”, I know I am aware of it but I could not recall any specific item.  The word scheme means “an elaborate plan of action” and if used as a verb, “it is to plot something harmful”.

I have a recent, fresh and little knowledge about strategy lately since I was put in charge at work to lead a Quality Team in my department.  I pushed back at first because I am more of an operational type of person and not as a strategic planner.  Being volunteered with a challenging task, I was “self-forced” to research the topic regarding “strategic management” so that I will be able to manage the quality team efficiently.  I came across this article/free eBook: Book-Leadership-Strategic%20Planning.pdf which provided me a few good insights on how to properly manage an enormous undertaking to improve quality.  In your spare time, please try to synthesize the book to whatever needs you have in your own line of work.  Strategic planning can be applied to any undertaking you have including your personal life, finances, family and career.

Strategic planning can be summarized into a few simple steps as describe in Figure 1 below.  The sole objective of a strategic planning is to achieve a specific mission.  A mission has to be divided into smaller portion called objectives and then the objectives has to be broken down into initiatives and then initiatives has to be broken down into the specific task.  Without breaking down the mission into the smallest detail [micro level] called specific tasks, the mission will fail.

The Strategic Planning and Implementation Hierarchy
1. Vision
2. Principles
3. Mission
4. Gap Analysis
5. Goals
6. Strategies
7. Objectives
8. Specific Task [this is the most important component]

G3. Wants To Demonize Believers
H1. Steals Seeds Of The Gospel
H2. Blinds Unbelievers
I1. Puts Phony In With The Real
I2. Tries To Change The Church’s Agenda

I did not mean to confuse you with mindless information.  Actually, these information are very useful in fighting against the “schemes of the devil”.  Knowing the schemes or initiatives of the devil can be a good starting point of fighting against the enemy.  Without truly knowing the actual task of the devil [what is it that is thrown at you?] , one cannot find a true countermeasure [remedy] for it.

Let’s try an example:
1. Hey, have you heard of so and so …. , this is D4, gossiping, which produces division.
2. You are diagnosed with cancer and you are depressed … this is B3, to intimidate you about your future
3. Don’t worry, using drugs or cheating with your spouse is not harmful… this is A1, you minor sinning can lead you to destruction.
4. I want to be rich and famous… this is D2, pride and selfish ambition.

I hope that you understand the point of identifying the schemes of the devil – with the knowledge of the scheme, we can now clearly identify what we need to do next or “not do”.

BC

NOTE: I did not came up with the list, I just rearranged the presentation model so that it can be simplified.

Wisdom Checklist

Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Fault Tree Analysis: Unhappiness

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. James 1.13-14

Temptations can result to unhappiness. I was curious about the subject this morning and did a study to the 3 buckets of the temptation of man.  They say [Bible scholars]  that all mankind’s downfall can be categorized by 3 items namely as:
1. Lust of the flesh
2. Lust of the eyes
3. Pride of life

As a background, please read this first: http://biblehub.com/1_john/2-16.htm.  I summarized Gill’s exposition in the mindmap below and I’ve added the failure analysis.

If I have to write a one-page article about happiness, it will only contain these words.
1. Know what you are doing.
2. Know that you are not indulging on the 3 common mode failures of man
3. Repeat Step 1 and 2 for life.

Principle: Empty Your Bucket

“Give to others, and you will receive. You will be given much. It will be poured into your hands—more than you can hold. You will be given so much that it will spill into your lap. The way you give to others is the way God will give to you.”” Luke 6:38 ERV

Do you have money? Give some so others may find comfort.
Do you have wisdom? Speak or write so others may solve a difficult problem.
Do you have power? Delegate so others may lead.
Do you have knowledge? Teach so others may learn.
Do you have the skills? Train so others can benefit.
Do you have faith in God? Share so others may find peace.
Do you have the counsel of the Holy Spirit, reveal it so others may find the way.

Empty your bucket daily so the next day you wake up, He can add more.
He cannot pour more resources when He sees that the vessels we are carrying is still full.

NOTES: Bloom’s Taxonomy

Desire #2-Curiosity, the desire for cognition and learning from “Normal Personality” got me curious about how to improve learning and how to encourage slow learners and to motivate people that has “less desire” for curiosity.

I found the answers in Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Principle: Don’t Stay In The Cave Forever

““You are the light that shines for the world to see. You are like a city built on a hill that cannot be hidden.” Matthew 5:14 ERV

Principle: Desire Everything But …

“I may have the gift of prophecy, I may understand all secrets and know everything there is to know, and I may have faith so great that I can move mountains. But even with all this, if I don’t have love, I am nothing.” 1 Corinthians 13:2 ERV

“A person who is so intelligent and discovered a possible cure for cancer but then dies and was not able to formulate a final cure.”

“A person who has billions of dollars in the bank but had not lift a finger to help the poor.”

“A person who thinks he knows a lot of things but has not shared it to humanity.”

“A person who has nothing to offer but love and did everything for humanity, have accomplished the greatest.”

When we add “LOVE” to anything that we aspire, it changes everything.

Desire everything but … starts with love, it’s more rewarding in the end.

#17. Desire To Know God

A few weeks ago, I came across the book – The Normal Personality by Steven Reiss [read myNotes]. Reiss and his team conducted a comprehensive research regarding the subject “motivation” and his team came up with a list of 16 Desires [see list below].

I don’t disagree with Reiss’ findings but I have an unresolved dilemma — I cannot categorize my “desire to know God” on any of the 16 Desires. I’ve tried Honor and Idealism and then Tranquility but it does not fit quite well.  Watch the interview of Shannon below and then listen to the song over and over and maybe you can help me identify what desires she have as she talks about the story of her song ‘Exalted One’.

So for my own use, I have to add #17, Spirituality, the desire to know God.  Perhaps, being a Christian is not or cannot be considered as Normal Personality. ;-]

Maybe Paul was right when he described Christians as peculiar  people: “Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” Titus 2:14

“peculiar-beyond or deviating from the usual or expected”

# Motive Description
1 Acceptance the desire to avoid criticism and rejection
2 Curiosity the desire for cognition
3 Eating the desire for food
4 Family the desire to raise one’s own children
5 Honor the desire to behave morally
6 Idealism the desire for social justice
7 Independence the desire for self-reliance
8 Order the desire for structure
9 Physical Activity the desire to move one’s muscles
10 Power the desire for influence of will
11 Romance the desire for sex
12 Saving the desire to collect
13 Social Contact the desire for friendship
14 Status the desire for prestige
15 Tranquility the desire for inner peace
16 Vengeance the desire to get even
17 Spirituality the desire to know God [added by blindcaveman]

Humanifesto By Gerard Kelly

I want to be a grace guerilla
no longer a chameleon of karma
the time has come to stand out from the crowd.
I want to give forgiveness a fighting chance of freeing me
I want to live in love
and live it out loud.

I want to drink deep of the foolishness of wisdom
instead of swallowing the wisdom of fools
I want to find a source in the deeper mines of meaning
to search out the unsearchable
to invoke the invisible
to choose the truth the TV hypnotists aren’t screening.

No camouflage
no entourage
no smoothly fitting-in
I want a faith that goes further than face value
and a beauty that goes deeper than my skin.

I want to be untouched by my possessions
instead of being possessed by what I touch
to test the taste of having nothing to call mine
to hold consumption’s cravings back
to be content with luck or lack
to live on water as well as on wine.

I want to spend myself on those I think might need me
not spend all I think I need on myself
I want my heart to be willing to make house calls.
Let those whose rope is at an end find in me a faithful friend
Let me be known as one who rebuilds broken walls.

No camouflage
no entourage
no smoothly fitting-in
I want a faith that goes further than face value
and a beauty that goes deeper than my skin.

I want to be centered outside the circle
to be chiseled by a different seam
I want to be seduce by another story
and drawn into a deeper dream
I want to be anchored in an undiscovered ocean
to revolve around an unfamiliar sun
a boom box tuned to an alternate station
a bullet fired from a different gun.

No camouflage
no entourage
no smoothly fitting-in
I want a faith that goes further than face value
and a beauty that goes deeper than my skin.

Peace Without End; Day1827-Stent-#1

6This will happen when the special child is born. God will give us a son who will be responsible for leading the people. His name will be “Wonderful Counselor, Powerful God, Father Who Lives Forever, Prince of Peace.”

7His power will continue to grow, and there will be peace without end. This will establish him as the king sitting on David’s throne and ruling his kingdom. He will rule with goodness and justice forever and ever. The strong love that the Lord All-Powerful has for his people will make this happen!

Normal Personality-The Book
If you want to understand who you are, what are your strengths and weaknesses, why are you so different from other people, why sometimes you don’t get along well with other people or your spouse or your significant others – this book is for you.

My Notes
I took some notes and placed it in excel format so that I will be able to see my 16-Desires and what it means in a simple way possible and be able to review quickly for later use.  I could not find a free motivation profile test online so I developed my own [ QuickGuide-NormalPersonality.xls]  using simple excel formulas. This is not an official Reiss Motivation Profile test but I think if you try to answer the Q&A portion on Sheet 1 and 2 slowly and honestly, you will be able to get a good picture of your motivation profile and then understand who you really are.  If you let your spouse/future partner take the test also using worksheet #2, the comparison is plotted side by side in worksheet #3 and match/mismatched are highlighted.

Please read the book first before you deep dive in understanding  about RMP and what the author is trying to convey regarding the 16 Desires that he came up with and why.  The author’s view regarding Freud’s many theories in psychoanalysis are intriguing but has validity and truth.

My objectives in reading the book are to find meaning of failures in life in general and understand why relationship between two initially loving and romantic couple degrades overtime and how to place countermeasures so not to repeat the mistakes of others or to prevent from a life or a relationship disaster to become a second or third occurrence.  Reading the book, knowing the 16 Desires and understanding what it means made my personal understanding better of why I sometimes do certain things or feel.

A Personality Journey-Knowing Myself
In my quest to truly understand myself, I embarked into a journey of finding out what type of personality I have and if there are any disorder in my ways and functions.  The journey was long and tedious and I have to carefully study and read and reread the materials that is presented in this book to identify what is and what is not a “disorder” [i’m not in the medical field] .   Many of us who is considered “generally functional”  will never attempt to seek professional help even if we show some symptoms of disorder.  We prefer to study ourselves, find out what it is that bothers us and what the professionals are reporting about it. This book to me is a revelation to some aspects of personality disorder. A good starting point of understanding ourselves and others.  Once you know the types of disorder, it becomes easier to identify “who is who” and “which is  which” and be able to make adjustments to your dealings and interaction with other people and also understanding yourself.

A word of caution – DO NOT TRY to engage treatment to your friends, family or spouse or coworkers. Leave the work to the professionals.  They know everything [i hope] .  But if you cannot afford any professional help, Identify your disorder and try to counter-oppose whatever is mentioned in the symptoms.  I’ve gathered enough notes and organized it so you don’t have to be so lost in your own personality journey.

Where do I start?
0. Know your GAF score.  Go to p. 9 and 11, any GAF score below 60 is critical, you need help.
1. Read the full book – Handbook of Diagnosis and Treatment of DSM-IV Personality Disorder

Pantalan [pier] in Merida, a reminder that there is always peace after the storm.

I had a short conversation with my little sister Hyades who is mitigating the situation in my home town Merida, Leyte Philippines. I can only give an advice and financial aid to them as they rebuild their lives and homes after the super typhoon Haiyan visited our little island.

-relief goods are coming in
-bag of rice and canned goods are delivered to the house
-she purchased roof materials for mom’s house from Cebu [a nearby island], delivery is today
-roof materials cost – P110,000.00 pesos [$2500.00]
-construction workers will remove the old roof, labor cost is around P50,000.00 pesos. [$1100.00]
-there is no home insurance in our town so my mom has to use her own resources
-they are still sleeping in the living room [sala is the pinoy term], she mentioned that her skin had some mosquito bites [she’s from Cebu, taga ciudad ba]
-they have to use a mosquito net when they go to bed
-banks in Ormoc is now back in service
-gas station is back to normal, no more long lines/wait in filling up of diesel cans
-no electricity yet, the promise is by Christmas-there will be light
-auto mechanic is working on the repair of the diesel engine for the ricemill [galingan] so that people can have their raw rice grains milled
-mom is breathing ok, able to talk for a very long time without pause.  she said that she repeats many stories and sometimes getting bored already on listening. i told her to let her talk at will, this is a good workout for her lungs [mom has COPD and needed oxygen at night to aid her breathing]
-there are longer lines in cellphone charging station than the relief lines or water station, i think that is a good sign that people’s needs are not level 1 and 2 anymore.  communication is level 3 in the order of basic human needs – food, clothing, shelter, safety are the most basic needs
-cellphone signal from Smart and Globe are now restored but she said that when she is talking, she has to be still and not move around or else, the signal is lost
-still no internet
-transportation is back
-coconut farms are the hardest hit, this will take years to restore
-a friend is starting a lumber business to supplement copra business
-shelter for homeless are the greatest need, no money to buy basic building materials
-money for the poor is much needed, no financial aid being distributed yet
-government has to intervene for the poor and homeless families, they cannot stand back up without any financial aid
-poor people cannot work because they have no house, they have no money to repair the house [a vicious cycle]
-solution is financial aid or they are given a semi-temporary place to stay so that they can start working again.

ToDo:
1. inquire a list of needy family
2. prioritize list according to the worst
3. send money
4. distribute money

Principle: Don’t Judge Others

““Don’t judge others, and God will not judge you.” Matthew 7:1 ERV

Things we humans do to other human beings – we judge them silently and sometimes verbally and sometimes in our writings. We see something in our eyes and immediately without hesitation, our thoughts form a quick assessment of what it is or who they are. Without careful considerations, these thoughts are imprinted deep inside us and then we make hurried conclusions of who they are and what they do and then we say … next time I will or will not ……..

I was trying to make a “do list” instead of “don’t” but I think using the “do not” delivers the essence of the passage more clearly.

Don’t approximate others
Don’t estimate others
Don’t evaluate others
Don’t gauge others
Don’t guess others
Don’t pass judgment on others
Don’t mind read others
Don’t label others
Don’t appraise others
Don’t assess others
Don’t place attributes on others
Don’t criticize others
Don’t disqualify others
Don’t examine others
Don’t try to figure out others
Don’t guesstimate others
Don’t measure others
Don’t rank others
Don’t rate others
Don’t underestimate others
Don’t overestimate others

Exceptions: if you are trying to “honestly help” them, one might assess (not judge) the other person so that you can identify the pathway to repair his or her problem through gentle advice and counseling.

See it at YouVersion.com:

Principle: Love God and Man

“Jesus answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and most important command. And the second command is like the first: ‘Love your neighbor the same as you love yourself.’” Matthew 22:37-39 ERV

1. Love God
2. Love your neighbor
… with “all” your heart.

One time, I was consulted in a level 5 marital situation (infidelity) and was asked for an honest advice. The offending spouse wanted forgiveness and household/life reentry. I was so puzzled at that time what to say but this verse influenced my advice.

Yesterday, the couple came to my house to drop off some food that they cook. The Holy Spirit whispered to my heart as I watched them drove away …. see the fruits of that advice you gave 5 years ago?

The word “all” means “all people”. Sometimes this can be a very difficult thing for other people. How can you love a person who inflicted so much pain on us? How can I?

But read the verse over and over. It does not imply “some”.

Day009: Haiyan Journal; No one has ever seen, heard and imagined

Tags: Disaster Relief
Haiyan Path
Haiyan Statistics

– I have 70.03 hours of PTO left [cannot effectively go home and help in two weeks time period]
– need to figure out “other” creative ways to help to the disaster site without leaving my home

“But as the Scriptures say, “No one has ever seen, no one has ever heard, no one has ever imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” Isaiah 64:4” 1 Corinthians 2:9 ERV

When people say that “we’ve never seen this before”, it becomes more of an expression of surprise than anything else. We are just being surprised and could not make out a word or statement. The truth is, there will always be a “first” for everything.

When the typhoon Haiyan was coming to the Pacific islands, the meteorologist monitoring hurricanes in the Pacific front were saying that they had never seen this type of typhoon before. They sent out warnings to the countries that the storm were going to be traveling. The people in the particular countries who were in the path took the advice and did everything they could to prepare. Typhoons don’t hit the town without warnings. There will always be heavy rains with high winds. I grew up in a typhoon battered country where the typhoons are named alphabetically, Haiyan named as Yolanda – meaning it was the 25th to hit the country, we are not surprised anymore with these type of warning. We’ve heard that statement before.

But the storm watchers were dead on about their predictions. The Typhoon landed in the country where I was raised, the Philippines. Oh, it’s not just the country where I was raised, it landed in the place where I spent my first 24 years of my life. I know the town by heart that I can even draw on paper the map of houses and the names of families that lives there

Sad to say that I am now residing in the U.S when the calamity happened. I now have my own family here in my comfortable home for more than 20 years now. But I still have ties to my hometown. We take vacations there from time to time. In fact I’m committed and decided that I will spend my retirement life in the same town. My 81 years old mother and a sister still lives there. My mother reminds me often that my bedroom upstairs is still well preserved and waiting for me.

As the recovery of the typhoon moves on, I can only imagine in my mind how my family and my hometown goes through all the difficulties they face. Sometimes I feel guilty that being the only son in the family of 5, that I should be there to facilitate on the recovery of things. I was trained by my father to act on his behalf, to handle situations and to improvise when impossibilities are up ahead. But guess where that only son is — he is somewhere else and unable to lend a physical hand. My 3 sisters are now the substitute in my absence. They just have to do what I should be doing by now. It is really a sad thing to think that I could be more useful there on the disaster site than where I am now, but I can’t change the fact that I have to help them in some other ways creatively while I am away from the actual disaster site. It really breaks my heart that I could not lift a finger to help someone out there. The pictures in the news does not tell the whole story. When I spoke to my mother and sisters, they told me things that pictures can’t even describe.

In November 5, 1991, the typhoon Uring touched down in Ormoc and claimed roughly 5000 lives in one city. I was there in Ormoc during the incident and saw what a true face of a calamity is. Everyone said that they had never seen that disaster before and many skeptics said that the place needs years to recover. After a few years, the city recovered and the traces of the flood and lost lives and properties vanished as the people diligently work hand in hand to rebuild the city.

As an observer of typhoon Haiyan and through my personal reading of news footage and watching pictures sent through smartphones to social media sites, I can say that the recovery from this disaster might take years or even decades to fully recover. The country is already at a very poor economic state with corrupt politicians mostly taking leadership at various sectors of the government. Most came to office through vote buying and coercion and political leverage. One might ask, where do we start? There is problem with infrastructures like roads, bridges and communication lines. Then there is the problem of basic necessities in life — like food, water, clothing and shelter. Then there is a problem with farming industries where mostly the town depend on — the rice field, the corn field and the coconut farms were destroyed.

I’ve already asked and settled this question with God before and I longtime promised to Him that I will never question His Sovereignty — “His ways are not our ways. His thoughts are not our thoughts.” On that early morning after the flood in Ormoc, I walked alone in the street covered with a 2″ thick mud that I can barely pickup my feet to take another step and on the side of the street I saw lifeless bodies lying untouched. I was speechless and felt guilty at times why I survived and they did not. I persistently ask God to give me a reason why “these” things has to happen. The Word He gave me that “His thoughts are higher than mine” — meaning He has something in mind. We can never truly understand His plans and actions. We can try to imagine and piece together but we cannot fathom what He really is thinking or planning and we will just be generating more questions than answers if we keep trying to find answers. When the World Trade Center was destroyed in September 11, 2001 and when the tsunami struck Thailand on December 26, 2004, I was reminded by the same answer. We can never understand why bad things happen to humanity, why God sometimes allows a disastrous event to happen. Why the already poor family had to suffer more. Why the people that live in uncomfortable homes had to lose their homes. Why the needy had to need more? Why can’t He just make the typhoon zigzag into areas that there will produce less damage to properties and human lives. Why can’t He just stop the storm just like the way He calmed the storm in the Sea of Galilee. Why can’t He …?

To my family and friends and fellow countrymen in the Philippines. Maybe this event is what we are waiting for. We wanted change, we wanted reforms in the government, we longed for a different Philippines.

Maybe this event is the starting point. In our small effort of personal recovery, maybe we can plant a new seed towards our future. This calamity is not the end but a beginning of a glorious recovery of a struggling nation. This moment is where we can start a fresh initiative.

I understand that sometimes the faithful in Christ can sometimes be shaken during this time of despair, but I want to encourage everyone to hold on to your beliefs, doubt sometimes, question Him sometimes, blame Him sometimes but don’t discount that He is not just the beginning of something. When He start something, He finishes it. He is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega.

Truly, “no one has ever imagined what God has prepared for those who love him”. He prepared something. I’m excited of what it is…

To my sister Hyades in Cebu:
I did some thinking and I came up with this list.  I understand that it is hard to think correctly while you are still in shock after the event.  This is just a guide and I wish I can execute each task for Mom, Dayline and the rest of the people in Merida.  Beb’s, your #1 priority is Mom’s breathing aid and then work on Food, Clothing, Shelter items etc.  If you are in doubt about the progress of the situation in Merida, relocate Mom to Cebu temporarily until the infrastructure are restored ie: electricity and water supply and roads.

To Mom, Dayline and Tootsie and the rest of the people from Merida,
Hang in there. Help is coming.

Yesterday, I went on with my regular Saturday long ride but I tweaked my routine.  Instead of listening to Hillsong while cycling, I listened to Steven talking about our beliefs.  [yeah, it’s dangerous and illegal but in Texas, it’s better not to hear the cars coming from behind  since they scares me a lot more than anything else, I’d rather get hit by a truck listening to sermons and praising God … ;-[]

Viewing Video Online Tips
Listening or viewing sermons online might not appear straight forward to some.  There are many ways on how to listen and view the materials online but I wanted to make sure that you are not frustrated/held back in getting your materials.

For viewing videos online, when there is a series message, the series is divided into parts. In the example below, the url is just this one link [go there] and the parts are in a “not so visible” tab [see red box below]

iOS7 App
If you have a smartphone [who does not have one these days … if you are reading this blog], download the Elevation App [App: Search for “Elevation App” in Playstore or Apps Store].  I found the Elevation App very useful since I have  2GB limit from AT&T and I can’t listen to the materials on a 4G connection without wasting my monthly data plan allocation.  When you click a sermon in the Elevation App, a download button appears next to the “Listen” button [see red box below].  Click on the download button while connected in your WIFI and download the sermon to save cellular bandwidth.  For me, I have a 32GB iPhone 5S and went to each sermons and downloaded the broadcast.  Once you’ve downloaded the material, you can now listen to the sermons offline – that means anywhere you go.  Plug your headphones on an learn something… while…

Now, build your library and enjoy.

myNotes on Part 6- Protecting Your Confidence:

I’m going invite/beg you to do two things.  Please listen to Part 3 first and then Part 6 [in that order]. To me, I find listening to sermons using a headphone — a better delivery of information.  Grab your smartphone, go to a comfortable place and just listen.  This takes about >1 hour — but I promise you, it’s something special.

Protect Your Confidence:
1. Connection between Vulnerability and Value
2. Connection between  Circumstance and Confidence
3. Connection between Trusting and Entrusted
4. Connection between Safety and Strength

Verse reference: Read slowly the Full Chapter of 2 Timothy 1:1-18 [Replace Timothy’s name with your name as you read it]

1Greetings from Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus. I am an apostle because God wanted me to be. God sent me to tell people about the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus.

2To Timothy, a dear son to me.

Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord.

Thanksgiving and Encouragement

3I always remember you in my prayers day and night. And in these prayers I thank God for you. He is the God my ancestors served, and I have always served him with a clear conscience.4I remember that you cried for me. I want very much to see you so that I can be filled with joy. 5I remember your true faith. That kind of faith first belonged to your grandmother Lois and to your mother Eunice. I know you now have that same faith. 6That is why I want you to remember the gift God gave you. God gave you that gift when I laid my hands on you. Now I want you to use that gift and let it grow more and more, like a small flame grows into a fire. 7The Spirit God gave us does not make us afraid. His Spirit is a source of power and love and self-control.

8So don’t be ashamed to tell people about our Lord Jesus. And don’t be ashamed of me—I am in prison for the Lord. But suffer with me for the Good News. God gives us the strength to do that.

9God saved us and chose us to be his holy people, but not because of anything we ourselves did. God saved us and made us his people because that was what he wanted and because of his grace. That grace was given to us through Christ Jesus before time began. 10And now it has been shown to us in the coming of our Savior Christ Jesus. He destroyed death and showed us the way to have life. Yes, through the Good News Jesus showed us the way to have life that cannot be destroyed.

11I was chosen to tell people that message as an apostle and teacher. 12And I suffer now because of that work. But I am not ashamed, because I know the one I have put my trust in. And I am sure that he is able to protect what I have put into his care until that Day.

13What you heard me teach is an example of what you should teach. Follow that model of right teaching with the faith and love we have in Christ Jesus. 14This teaching is a treasure that you have been trusted with. Protect it with the help of the Holy Spirit, who lives inside us.

15You know that everyone in Asia has left me. Even Phygelus and Hermogenes have left me. 16I pray that the Lord will show mercy to the family of Onesiphorus. Many times Onesiphorus encouraged me. He was not ashamed that I was in prison. 17No, he was not ashamed. When he came to Rome, he looked and looked for me until he found me. 18I pray that the Lord Jesus will make sure Onesiphorus receives mercy from the Lord God on that Day. You know how many ways this brother helped me in Ephesus.

1. Connection between Vulnerability and Value
guard the treasure
vulnerability signifies value
thieves don’t steal from an empty houses
vulnerability-susceptibility to injury and attack
God has given you something valuable
recognize vulnerability, you have something good in you
struggle is not a sign of weakness, it is an indication that you are valuable
if you are struggling, don’t quit – keep going

2. Connection between  Circumstance and Confidence
enemy [the devil] will attack your circumstance because he is truly after your confidence
analogy of Wallet and Money: thieves are not after your wallet, they are after your money [inside your wallet]
wallet is the circumstance and money is the confidence
sickness is the circumstance and believing that God overcame death is your confidence [your beliefs]
cancer can’t beat you because Jesus conquered death at the cross [He was resurrected]
circumstance can cause you to lose confidence
make a decision to protect your confidence
never give the devil your confidence
What is our confidence?
1. confidence of the Gospel [The Good News]
2. confidence of Christ
3. confidence of our beliefs
4.confidence of the promises of God given to us; examples: I will never leave you; I will always be with you; I’ve forgiven you no matter what you’ve done
sin does not change the truth that God saved us
God is always holding us, and not “us” holding God
when we let go-example sinning or going against God or rebelling against God, we are the one who is letting go of our grip [not God letting us go]
don’t let your confidence be affected by your circumstance
circumstance is not your confidence

3. Connection between Trusting and Entrusted
can you trust God?
do you know that God entrusted us Read 2 Timothy 1:14 “This teaching is a treasure that you have been trusted with. Protect it with the help of the Holy Spirit, who lives inside us”.
can God trust you with the treasure? [the confidence of the Gospel]
sometimes it is easier to trust God than to believe the God entrusted us
Example: Peter walking in water
Did Peter doubted about Jesus?
or Did Jesus doubted Peter’s ability to trust?
trust Him that He is able to do anything for us but don’t stop there because that is only the first part
can you be trusted with His ability?  He will do it with you
you need to look at your life that by His strength in you, you are able.
confidence has to go beyond the idea the God is able
but are you able to do it with His ability in you?
God entrusted us “something” [this is your calling, your purpose]
are you able to protect it?
you are not an accident to His eyes, God hand picked you, He entrusted you with something
God has given you something, guard it
your confidence is under attack-not the Gospel
guard your confidence in the Gospel
make sure that your circumstance does not rob your confidence
trust God that He is able but also trust that He is able to do it in you – through you
don’t lose your confidence in Christ
our greatest enemy is ourself – our mind
guard your mind, the enemy uses our mind to lose our confidence

4. Connection between Safety and Strength
attacks-the devil is mad at you
the devil want to stop you [whatever you are doing for the Gospel and humanity]
paradigm: “I’m under attack, this is not working”
paradigm shift: “I’m under attack, this is working”
progress means opposition, keep going
we are the guardian of the Gospel-entrusted by God through the Holy Spirit
you are not in this battle by yourself
the Holy Spirit is with you because you are the Temple of the Holy Spirit
know that whatever happens, you are safe because of the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit speaking to you at any circumstance -“put it on me”

Principle: Partnership Requires One Mind

“Brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, I beg all of you to agree with each other. You should not be divided into different groups. Be completely joined together again with the same kind of thinking and the same purpose.” 1 Corinthians 1:10 ERV

“Agree-be in accord, be in agreement; be similar and consistent; coincide in characteristics; go well together; achieve harmony of opinion.”

One of the best indicator that our endeavor or project or our partnership or our relationship or our marriage will fail is the presence of constant disagreement. Occasional conflict is fine but when faced with daily arguments, disagreements, feelings not lined up or conflict of discernment or not seeing the same reality, then the partnership is headed for an upcoming disintegration. It will break and evolve into something else.

We cannot prevent all catastrophic partnership failures but we can mend some — especially if the partnership started in a strong bond and superb foundation. Partnership requires a base foundation of trust, respect, submission and bending of minds. These are the bedrocks of a solid relationship. Add the essence of time to it and you will have a concrete structure of a lasting partnership.

To Brittney and Brent, may you guys establish these foundation early as you travel towards building your own family and career and circle of friends.

Embrace the principle of one mind.

BookNotes: Sex Drive-In Pursuit of Female Desire

Book- Sex Drive-In Pursuit of Female Desire
Author-Clayton
ISBN-978 174175 6661
Chapters: 10
Pages: 362
myRating: 5 Stars

On my last entry, I mentioned about the Principle: Don’t Jump To Conclusions . Ok, here’s my plea, don’t jump to conclusion and start your investigation or inquiry/imagination why I am reading a book with this title. I don’t need to explain or justify my reasons here why I spent 48 hours studying the subject.  I understand that  there is no biblical passages found in this book.  But why? You may wonder about my reasons and purpose but please don’t jump to conclusions.  Someone said “Knowledge is Power”.  When you learn something you don’t know, it becomes a stored energy within you and with the right moment and right circumstance, you can harness that power and turn it into something useful and productive and meaningful.  Convinced?  You don’t have to…

Seriously, here’s my reasons of reading this book:
1. I’m taking another one-week vacation from work and tired of reading technical and computer books, mowing my yard, inventing something, reading Instructables, taking notes on Hyper-V issues etc [Samsung lift the mandatory vacation but this week was already approved]
2. I wanted to know why sweet, good and loving couples end up in separate houses and different partners over time.
3. Just curious about the subject
4. Knowledge, I just want to know …

Warning:
1. If you are a wife, read this book
2. If you are a husband, read this book
3. Others, do not read this book, it’s not for you. It does not apply to you!

0-Crisis in women’s sexuality
It’s the end of another long day and you’ve barely survived
it. You stand at the mirror and brush your teeth, scrutinizing
the lines on your face. You wonder, as you open the little
bottle, when you started using cream specifically for the
under-eye region. Was that the point when you started
ageing?

You crawl into bed and rest your body against your partner’s
solid form. Although he is also tired, his mouth finds your
neck and his hands bring you closer. But you don’t want the
intimacy, the physical connection. You’d like to sleep, read
your novel, or analyze why your co-worker is so mercurial.
Besides, you don’t feel the least bit sexy, and everybody
knows that’s the key to everything.

When it comes to women’s priorities, is sex on top? A study
discussed later in the book estimated that 43 per cent of
American women are dissatisfied with sex.1 A Canadian
journal reported that 30–35 per cent of women experienced a
lack of sexual desire.2 Research in Germany found that once a
woman is in a secure relationship her sex drive begins to
plummet.3

Women are collectively not in the mood because inside our
cerebral cortex, where arousal originates, there is a to-do list
that is never-ending. And just when it looks like you’ve
nailed all the tasks, another lot file in, obliterating any thought
of sex.

DINS-double income no sex;

“Libido refers to our sexual drive, but also our general vigor
and enthusiasm. Low libido leads to reduced interest in sex
and reduced creative expression of our sexuality. However,
rather than dissipating altogether, our libido often gets
funneled from sex into other areas of our life: Our career can
gobble that intense, heady focus. As can our homes, dinner
tables and wardrobes. And most undoubtedly, a singular
absorption with our children can supersede even the early,
blossoming stage of limerence.
In other words, often it is not that our libido is low, but rather
that our creative energy is being directed elsewhere, from
seduction and carnality to more contained pursuits.”

10-Bringing Sexy Back
most cases, the advice given to women with low libido is talk to your doctor
but most women, this is the last thing they want to do
other advices: do home research, consult self-help books
other forms of treatment: acupuncture, herbal remedies or sexuality workshop
when you visit a doctor: questions about:
1. medical history
2. hormonal status
3. changes in sexual interest
4. trouble with arousal
5. orgasm or vaginal dryness
6. pain
7. emotional distress
8. use of medication

Category of Sexual Problems
1. can’t get it up
2. can’t get it in
3. can’t be bothered

5 Scale of Sexual Desire
1. Initiatory—here you are motivated to have sex, look out for
sexual opportunities and feel, in her words, ‘horny’
2. receptive—in the next level, you are receptive to sex and
willing to engage if your partner initiates
3. available—here you are prepared to have sex, but don’t feel
spontaneous lust
4. neutral—your motivation to engage in sex is low
5. disinclined—you experience no lust or interest in sexual
activity.

Sex therapy does not have a good success rate
Who in the relationship is in the best position to fix the sexual stalemate?
Is it you? Is it him?

Newton’s Law of Motion

Why not think about love the way we think about the laws of
motion? Here is Newton’s first law: An object’s inertia
causes it to continue moving at the same speed and in the
same direction unless it is acted upon by an unbalanced
force. Inertia, then, means resistance to change. If the forces
on us are balanced—that is, in equilibrium—change will not
occur.

“Inertia is also what happens in long-term relationships, which
start off heady and intoxicating, but over time drain
themselves of passion. We can counter the sexual stalemate,
but the wider is the sexual gap between partners, the greater is
the unbalanced force that needs to be applied. The more
established the pattern, the greater the distance one must
bridge. It seems that the longer we stand in the space of lovers
turned friends, or lover punishing lover—the longer we stand
apart and the greater the work required to restore eros.”

“If you are in a relationship where the sexual current has
slowed, an important question to ask is,  Who has the most to lose
if the situation is not improved? If desire remains
dormant, with one partner unsatisfied, what might the
consequences be? Marital incompatibility? Threat of
adultery? Relationship discontinuation? Or simply one or
both of you feeling undesired, unseen?”

“When men cheat, it is often so that they can be seen
differently—as important, powerful, sexy, exciting, larger
than they are in the four walls of their home relationship.
Women, too, may look to a new lover to be heard, witnessed,
appreciated. It is this freshness that gives an affair voltage. At
its heart, an affair is highly narcissistic—more about you than
the other person.”

Get it back:
1. Kiss your partner everyday-turning on the senses
2. Sexual mindfulness-be at the moment, touch with love; be fully engage
3. Turn off “The List”- it should not be in your to do list, be spontaneous
4. Open-eyed-look into each other’s eyes deeply when …
5. Prioritize passion-there is work, parenting, household chores but put passion as #1; create an environment and allow time to have it; set your partner as an important part of your life [again] and just a partner in business or a roommate
6. Schedule a weekly date nights
7. Manufacture danger-take up rock climbing together; ride a roller coasters together; these increases dopamine production;
8. Distance-get away from each other for a while. Think of inertia, a balanced system will stay balanced until a force is applied. Tip the scale or stir the pot sometimes but know your boundaries.
9. Have a romantic meal
10. Think that he or she is your partner for life [you used to have a good time together]
11. Avoid drug treatments, there are side effects.
12. Everything starts in you. Don’t wait for your partner. No one will.

from Blind Caveman
13. Never give up if there is no evident result, life and relationship is not all about sex
14. Learn to accept each other. You promised that when you said “I do”.

Principle: Don’t Jump To Conclusions

"“Don’t judge others, and God will not judge you. Don’t condemn others, and you will not be condemned. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven. Give to others, and you will receive. You will be given much. It will be poured into your hands—more than you can hold. You will be given so much that it will spill into your lap. The way you give to others is the way God will give to you.”" Luke 6:37, 38 ERV

"Judge-form a critical opinion; officially declare a judgment on someone; decide something without having all the facts"

Synonyms: estimate, evaluate, guess, label, pass judgment

Judging is a habit. It is a disease and we all have it.

There it is, I just made an incorrect judgment that "we all have it". How sure am I with the statement? What are my sources? Where is my research? Where are the data explaining that we as human beings are born to judge a person, a situation or an event. I don’t have it — so I’d better not pass judgment on that matter. I will let you decide on the idea that we are all guilty of passing judgment immediately as soon as we see or hear or read something.

Don’t jump to conclusions. Get the facts. Inquire. Research. Read. Study. Experience it. Write a draft about it. Delete it and then forget about it.

Keep it to yourself unless it can save lives or improve the quality of life. It is not for us to judge.

– driver of  stock prices is the earning of the company
– don’t buy stock that is not making momeny
– don’t base your decision to purchase because the price is rising.

2. Mr. Market is mental [has a bipolar disorder]
– stock rise-pay more
– stock fell-unload stock for much less worth

Investor’s Failure: – they pay too much attention to what stock market is doing currently

Buffet’s Rule:
Be greedy when others are fearful.
Be fearful when others are greedy
Not following the crowd is many times the wisest to go.
Don’t follow the crowd, examine first before making a decision

Memorize this rule:
1. The stock market is there to serve you when you want it to
2. Don’t let the market influence your buy/sell decision
3. You should be a buyer when after careful evaluation you can buy something for less than its intrinsic value
4. Price is the biggest factor

Checklist: When buying a stock?
1. Figure out what the company  does
2. How it makes money
3. Why you like it

1. Plant/Factory
2. Employees
3. Product
4. Services

A popular myth: ”Don’t put all your eggs in one basket”

Paradigm Shift:
” Put all your eggs in one basket and watch that basket closely”.
“ Concentrate portfolios on your best ideas and watch your ideas closely”

Andrew Carnegie’s Philosophy
Life should compromise two parts:
1. Accumulation of wealth
2. Distribution of wealth to worthy causes

Carnegie’s Dictum:
To spend the first third of one’s life getting all the education one can.
To spend the next third making all the money one can.
To spend the last third giving it all away for worthwhile causes.

Buffet’s Stock- 6 Stocks is best
Munge’s Stock-3 Stocks is best

Principle: Two Places To Live

"I ask only one thing from the Lord. This is what I want most: Let me live in the Lord ’s house all my life, enjoying the Lord ’s beauty and spending time in his palace."  Psalm 27:4 ERV
"Live-be an inhabitant of, spend most of one’s life in"
I’m not sure if you noticed that I’ve been writing more entries in my journal lately. I’m on my 2nd week of the 2-week mandatory vacation mandated by our company and this is  for the month of September. I also had a 2-week vacation last August and it gets better, in October, I’ll have another 2 weeks vacation. I have a total of 6 weeks PTO (paid time off) to burn and I’m running out of things to do. I’ve shared mostly my activities because I felt that some of you who live in the US can benefit. It’s good to share stuff especially if what I’m sharing is relevant to you. If it is not, then pardon me and move to the next page.
Yesterday was a different day for me in a special way. I only had to run 2 miles for my daily dose of aerobic exercise. But before I did my run, I did a "lifestyle switch".
In my home office, I built a very nice sound system last year. The components are the following: a 10 channel Allen Heath mixer ZED 12FX, a 31 band EQ, Behringer FBQ3102 and two 15" Alto powered speakers TS115A and a 12" sub. The music player is my Dell laptop E4300 on a docking station with dual monitors and connected to Spotify Premium account. Yes, this is a full blown Public Address system being deployed is my home office. The sound is very crystal clear and can be so loud if I turned it up.

When I’m at home, there is always Christian music playing. I only listen to Christian music.  When I say "only Christian music, I mean only Christian music". Many years ago, after I received Christ in my life, I have to burn all my life collection of rock in roll music. It was at first so impossible to do but I did it anyway to show commitment to God that my transformation was "for real". Years passed, the desire to listen to my old tunes just disappeared completely. Sometimes when I hear a song from the Eagles, Neil Young, Foreigners, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Asin, Freddie Aguilar, America, the Beatles, Rod Stewart, Jim Croce and many more I can’t remember- this brings back old memories. It would feel like time was frozen and then I am sent back to the specific moment or event.

Yesterday, after I finished reading/studying the daily Bible verse, an idea came up (maybe a temptation). I was alone in the house and no one is around to judge me or convict me (Holy Spirit was there because I cried)  and so I searched for some old songs in Spotify and played them one by one. I don’t know if some of you have a Spotify account but if you do, be careful because at your fingertips, you have access to all songs in the ‘whole world’ – I mean all songs. I grow up in the Philippines and I used to  listen to Freddie and Asin. For some reason, their songs collided with my disaster in life when I was still a teenager. My father died when I was 16 (April 1983 right after high school) and listening to their music seems like they were my confession in life or therapy. I spent hours listening to the old tunes and instead of being taken back in time, the Holy Spirit started talking to my heart and tears rolled out from eyes reminding me of my transformation. The message was -  "that was you before and you’ve come a long way as I transformed your life to where and what you are right now".

After listening for 2 hours or so, I then downloaded a few songs to my iPhone Spotify account and went for a 2 mile run. While running, I continued listening to my old non-Christian music songs. When I got home after the run, the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart – now delete all those music you’ve just downloaded and get back to Hillsong music.
As I reflect to what just happened, I learned quite a few critical things as the youversion verse of the day is about living our life in the Lord’s house fits to what I’ve experience.
There are two places to live in this world, inside the Lord’s house or outside. The thing that I did yesterday – listening to my old music was not living in God’s presence. I was living outside the Lord’s house.  How do I know? I just know!
I don’t want to convince you to stop listening to your non-Christian music. Its not my business to do that. That is God’s job – to give you a new heart and a new desire. It is not a thing to do or execute. It is a result of an inner transformation – as you decide that you have no more desire to worship other gods anymore.

My children has smartphones. They are listening to music that I have no idea what the singer is singing about or the lyrics it contain or the message they confess. I respect them – I was there before and I want them to switch to Christian music as part of their testimony one day and not because daddy said so.
6 Reasons Why I listen to Christian music only?
1. It’s my worship.
2. It’s my prayer and confession and declaration.
3. I’m filled with encouragement instead of negative emotion. Listen to the lyrics closely word for word and ask about what the song is really about. Mostly, it is about a struggle of  love or bad feelings, a sad story, a "should" statement.
4. It’s reprogramming my mind and heart with the Word. Praise and Worship music strengthens me spiritually.
5. I don’t want to sing Praise and Worship songs on Sundays only at Church. I want it 24/7 if possible.
6. I’m doing a song rehearsal, because in heaven, those are the things we normally do. "So we will sing and play songs in the Lord’s Temple all the days of our life" Isaiah 38.20.
I’d better get used to it.

Notes: Happiness and Stress

Documentary: Happy
Documentary: Stress

Happiness- increased dopamine levels; a neurotransmitter in the brain that when released, makes you feel good.
Intentional action-do something to make you happy.
When you do something, find your rhythm, be in the zone.
Do something that you like to do and be good at it. Master it.
Values=Happiness, our values in life produces happiness
Value cooperation more than competition, if you feel competitive with somebody, beware because it can led to unhappiness
Cooperation=happiness
Competition=unhappiness
Avoid seeing life through the physical eyes
See life using your heart, this is your vision
Be compassionate, compassion led to happiness and greater satisfaction in life
Joy comes from the connection with other people, stay connected to people/friends
Look for happiness in non-material things
Be interdependent with each other in a community and interact with environment, see nature daily
Key to happiness-compassion and loving-kindness
Do compassion meditation. Meditate and think about compassion for 15 minutes
Count your blessings everyday
Review 5 Things To Be Grateful every night
Do 5 Acts of kindness daily
Cultivate happiness through compassion
Be authentically “YOU” at all times
There is no formula for happiness, it is different for every person
Only you can make you happy.
Others can make you unhappy, but not make you happy.
Do things that you love to do
Don’t do things you don’t like to do
Appreciate what you have daily.

Stress-it’s there to help us [fight or flee]
Problems with human beings – we don’t know when to turn it off
Antidote of stress-find a place where you have control

If you are in a leadership position, avoid giving unnecessary stress:
1. Give people more involvement of what they do
2. Give people more say of what they do
3. Give more reward for the amount of effort they put out
4. Invite people to contribute
5. Create a condition where people flourish and grow

Reducing stress
1. Don’t bite when you are having a bad day
2. Social affiliation is powerful, don’t be a loner; interact with other humans
3. Avoid too much ambition
4. Give to others more than you receive, giving is healthier than you think
5. Don’t just survive stress, thrive on it
6. When adversity comes, react normally with real emotions like anger, frustration, grief, sadness but make sure to get back to baseline immediately.
7. Don’t dwell on the results of the adversity.  You cannot undo it. Flip to the next page as soon as possible.

Principle: Delete Fear and Dismay

“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’” Isaiah 41:10 NKJV

“Fear-an emotion experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger usually accompanied by a desire to flee or fight”

“Dismay-a feeling of despair in the face of obstacle; lower someone’s spirits; make downhearted; fill with apprehension or alarm; cause to be unpleasantly alarm.”

Principle: Delete Exaggerated Sense of Self-Importance

“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.” Philippians 2:3, 4 NKJV

“Conceit-feeling of excessive pride; the trait of being unduly vain”

“Vain-characteristic of false pride; having an exaggerated sense of self importance”

1. Avoid selfish ambition

2. Avoid conceit

3. Exercise lowliness of mind

4. Admire others more than self

5. Look for your own interest “but” — also include others in the process.

Principle: “If and Then” Life Experiment

“What you should want most is God’s kingdom and doing what he wants you to do. Then he will give you all these other things you need.” Matthew 6:33 ERV

But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides. (Matthew 6:33 AMP)

If and then statement-hypotheses followed by conclusion; a conditional statement; deductive reasoning; top down approach to problem solving.”

As we grow older, we become wiser. You don’t have to agree with me but that is my observation in life as I consume one “24 hours” each day. Some experts call it – learning. Learn 1 thing everyday and in a year, you will have 365. We gained insights everyday during a problem solving session. When we face difficulties each day, we always want to know “what have we learned from this incident or event? When a child makes a mistake, they said don’t scold them but instead teach them or show them the learnings. Even at big corporations, there is a database system to upload all the events and countermeasures so that the next new guy in your department does not have to repeat your mistakes.

The verse “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God” has been there for years but we don’t normally pay attention to the principle behind it or the implication. This is Jesus speaking to His followers back then during the early stage of the church – the fellowship or the brotherhood (not the organized church). Please read it over and over until the message sinks in.

What does it mean to “seek first”? What is the Kingdom of God? What is it that He wants me to do? What is the reward? What can I get out from doing His will? Will I be happy? Will I be peaceful? Will I be prosperous? Will I be satisfied? Will I be full of wisdom? Will I be healthy? Will I have a sound mind? Will my influence in life radiates to those who are close to me? Will I be able to look back 30 years from now and say to myself “I will not change anything if I have the choice to live my life over again.”

I did not latched on to this Kingdom lifestyle early. I was maybe 23 or 24 when I started but looking back now (I’m 46), I can honestly tell you from the bottom of my heart that it works. To my children Brittney and Brent (if or when you stumble upon this blog), get this principle early in your life – God First. Your life should evolve in Biblical principles and you will be amazed how your life will unfold in a supernatural way.

I don’t do things in life because of the rewards placed in front of me. I am aware of the availability of the rewards. Yes, rewards are great motivators but in the Kingdom, the idea of “being chosen” is already a huge privilege and I don’t think I need something else. (since you are reading this, you are one of the chosen also). Knowing that I am serving for the King is already a great satisfaction to me. The material things are just the top layer of overall package.

Can I place a challenge in your heart today? There is a hypotheses mentioned above, can you test it for just one year and see if the conclusion is true to you? The only thing that you have to do is say “ok Lord, let me test the hypothesis for one year”. I’m not going to tell you any specific guidelines, you will directly receive your guidelines from Him. It’s your personal journey and experiment and you should do it your own way.

One rule – listen to the small voice who is whispering in your heart at all times.

Enjoy your “if and then” life experiment.

Principle: Auto Goodness Syndrome

“We must not get tired of doing good. We will receive our harvest of eternal life at the right time. We must not give up. When we have the opportunity to do good to anyone, we should do it. But we should give special attention to those who are in the family of believers.” Galatians 6:9, 10 ERV

“Goodness-that which is pleasing, valuable or useful; moral excellence or admirableness”

Is being a “good person” a natural thing? Are we born with goodness? Can we develop goodness in our heart? I am an angry person, do I have the chance of changing my attitude? I’m always sensitive to mistreatment, can I respond with goodness at all times no matter how deep is the mistreatment? Where is the demarcation line between good and bad? Who define the rules of goodness? Where are the standards of goodness? What will I get if I do good things?

A few years back, I was annoyed by a coworker who was always responding my statements with contempt or lack of respect. I will go in silence for weeks with the person and I would pray and intercede and ask God to show me why this guy is bothering me every time I have the chance of working side by side with him. Then again, the same treatment comes out from him. I spent many years in Aikido training and know a lot of things about fighting and defending myself. I’ve also been indoctrinated in the military having served in US Army for 4 years and had a chance of living closely with all types of personalities. So in me, there is a mixture of different flavors of good and bad. I can only count with my fingers the times that I’ve confronted a person head on. Normally, I will shrug off their names in my list of friends and move on. But this person was different. So being with my bad side (even though I was already a born again Christian), I choose to fight in words. I moved my face close to him and stared at his eyes and told him that I am ready to fight. He was confused when he heard me say those words. He was not expecting it, He was speechless and unable to move. When I say those words, I was ready to defend myself for a physical confrontation. Of course I did not make a violent move. But a strange thing happened after i said that, this person melted right in front of me. The next thing I said to him was “you need to rewire your brain” (this is before I’ve read the book “Rewire Your Brain”). Fast forward an hour later, I end up knowing all his life story. He told me about his on going relationship troubles, child custody battle and his new girlfriend giving him a hard time. In the end, I became a listener to him and understood that he just wanted my attention and conversation and really do not want to fight against me. He was like a little child poking at me just to get my attention “hey, I’m annoying you so that I can be friends with you”. Many of our adversaries are just like that – they wanted our attention so badly that they will do anything to get it.

I know that sometimes I can be a bad guy but majority of the times, I’m in the good side or at least I’m trying to. It takes discipline to be good and a lot of mercy from God. I choose to be good. It is a conscious decision every waking hours.

There are benefits of being a good person. I don’t need to list those things here because I am sure that you already know what I’m talking about.

I do hope that you too will exercise the courage in doing good things to other people. Maybe one day we can change the way this world behaves.

Principle: Give/Do Something Secretly

““Be careful! When you do something good, don’t do it in front of others so that they will see you. If you do that, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.” Matthew 6:1 ERV

“Giving-disposing of property by voluntary transfer without receiving value in return”

Would it be nice to publish all our giving to everyone so that the whole world will know? Would it be a good example for others that we help out the poor sacrificially? What is the purpose of hiding our generosity from the public?

The reward system in the Kingdom of Heaven is different. From our perspective, the act of giving or helping someone should be done in the open for others to see so that it will invite more people to become more generous and also it will boost our “self” to give more.

One thing I learned from the Bible is the “principle of opposite”. If you think of something and you want to be Biblically correct, do the opposite. If you want to be first, be last. If someone slaps your left cheek, give the other side, if you want to have more, give. Love your enemies. Pray for those who curse you.

The lesson implied here in this verse is about the attitude of giving. The essence why we give or help the helpless is to show mercy (regardless of any outcome).
Don’t give because there is a reward waiting for you.
Don’t give because I want you to feel good about your actions.
Don’t give because I want your ego to grow.
Give or do something good because your heart told you so.
Give because you are given the opportunity to become God’s extension on earth.
Give because that is how God mobilizes His Kingdom.

Key points:
1. We are expected to give. The world will not be what it is now if people refuse to give their resources willingly (including time and talent)
2. There is a reward when we give. The reward is not really necessary. We give because we have something to give in excess of our capacity to hold. We have more than enough, so we give.
3. Giving is powerful, because it softens our heart (catalyst). The hardest thing to do in life is to give up something. But when you do, wait for a few years and look back and you can feel how rewarding it is to know that you made a difference in someone’s life.
4. Giving changes us more than the receiver. There is a magical feeling when you give. Hard to explain but worth a try.
5. Don’t think of rewards when you do something. Just do it without a hidden agenda. There is more pleasure and surprises when done this way. Imagine that you and a child are in front of a cookie jar with one cookie left inside and you really are hungry and craving for sweets. Give the cookie to the child and watch/observe the way he/she is enjoying the moment.

Who do you think received more pleasure?
