MapMyRide Overall Stats

image

Plus1, every time we signed up for Outlaw ride, in the packet is one of this keychain.  I now have 8 of these.

image

4 Clif bars and 4 Power Gel for the the road to sustain energy. I consumed 2.5 Clif bars and 4 power gels.  There were food supplies in every rest stop

image

I decided to use the road bike today.  I trained with this bike all year and don’t want to create a changepoint.

image

My daughter Brittney cooked this for me since Thursday and I had been eating the same plate of pasta for two days.

image

The bike transport.

image

A secured bike transport this time.  Last March after the Rosedale Ride 2016, my bike fell off at I35 because I redesigned the bike rack.  I transformed it from a 4-bike to 2-bike but did not account the strength of the clamp.  The clamp is now at the right place after I turned it around.  During the accident, the clamp was mounted the other way around.  At high speed, the flat top tube works its way out the unsecured clamp

At the entrance of Old Settler Park.

At the parking lot of Dell Diamond.

Bike clamp came loose while driving.
I’ve converted this 4 bike rack into 2 and cut off the extra mount.

FMEA: Failure Mode and Effect Analysis

Failure Mode:
Bike Fell Off From Bike Rack

Cause of Failure:
1. Not enough clamp holding tension.
2. I did not over-tightened the clamp screw because this is a carbon fiber frame.
3. This is the first time I’ve used the bike rack since the modification.

Recommended Action:
1. Mount the bike in the inner rack [not the outer]
2. Tighten the clamp at max level
3. Tie a rope for redundancy

Damage to the bike:
1. Scratches in the Ultegra shifter
2. Paint scratches in the top tube where the bike was mounted
3. Pedal deep scratch and slightly bent
4. Drive crankset feels like it is misaligned [but this could be a placebo effect since I saw the pedal has scratches]

Repair Actions:
1. Conducted a comprehensive bike/frame inspection, no functional and structural damaged. ok.
2. Conducted a spoke tension verification on both wheels, ok
3. Tightened all screws, ok
4. Inspect wheel alignment and true, ok|
5. Replace right Look pedal with a spare, ok
6. Ride 2 minutes in the trainer, ok
7. Ride 35 miles outdoor the next day, ok

What did not happened?
1. I did not dropped the bike in the middle of the Interstate Highway 35.
2. I did not cause any accident of the vehicles following me.
3. My bike was not ran over by a speeding cars.

Truly grateful I was looking back at my  rearview mirror when I saw that something was not right.  A quick decision and a decisive response to exit to the side of the highway made a big difference.  The bike fell off as I moved to the right side of the road.  The grassy shallow ditch was also a big help in preventing more damage to the bike.

My 2015 Training Log

Lifetime Miles
image

Fine tuning the bike before the event.  All systems go.  This is a newly built bike from China.  It’s an all carbon frame and wheelset.  Currently, I had 500 miles on it and no issues yet.

image

Fresh bike before the ride.  2 bottles of gatorade ready to go.

image

My Outlaw 100 key chain collection.  Now I have 7 – 7 years or 700 miles.

image

No. 105 was my ride number.  There is an emergency name and a phone number in the bib number just in case one dies during the ride and the family can claim the body and collect insurance money of the rider.

image

I had a plate of this the night before the ride and then a repeat of this at 0600 before the ride.  This is enough to start the carbs fuel in my system.  at 7am, I have to go to the toilet and do no.2 to unload the extra stuff.  [don’t tell anyone-this is a top secret pre-ride routine.]
It’s a pasta with alfredo sauce and a jalopeno sausage from HEB.  It does not taste good because it was made by me but I had no choice.

image

At the start of the ride.

image

Portable toilets.  I need to be here by 0750 to do no.1 only.  It’s “a must” because the coffee and morning hydration needs to go because the first rest stop is at 20 miles, which is an hour plus from the starting line.

image

This is Mile 20 something, it’s the final junction between Route 100 miles or Route 65 miles.  Me and Thomas spent a few minutes here because he hesitated on the 100 miles.  After a few chit chat and encouragement, he opted to go with me at the 100 miles route.  But when we proceeded to the start of the 100 miles route, the safety person stopped us and told us that the route is closed, we were late.  I told the guy  that there is no way that I will come home doing 65miles only because I trained for this event all year long.  After the debate and persuasion, they took our bib number and marked us not part of the Outlaw100 bike ride.  We proceeded to the 100 miles without the event’s  safety umbrella.

Avoid/Limit “Glimpse of Future”

I collect data a lot in  my personal life but not so much for the purpose of creating success in the future nor trying to give unsolicited advice to the world but for the purpose of personal note taking [I think it is a form of self-psychotherapy, I made that up] nor telling the world how “great” or “not so great” I am.  I think it is cool to have a history of life.  I’ve learned journaling from someone.  One time I discovered a pocket journal of my father [1929-1983] filled with fragments of places/names but no thoughts and opinions.  I’ve also discovered his box of pictures taken during his travel with the US Navy in 1950’s and hand written notes at the back of the pictures.  One thing lacking of his journal – details.  I had a hard time connecting information.  With the availability of technology now a days, one can just write anything and publish it. So here I am sharing with you something of no importance, enjoy it anyway ;-].

I used to be a planner and an execution of a carefully crafted plan but I’ve changed mindsets a few years back due to my knowledge and experiences of uncertainties. Life is hard to predict. Life is full of uncertainties. Yes, you can learn from experiences and extrapolate the future. Yes, you can say that it happened before and one should avoid/do it because we learned a lesson from bad/good experiences. Nor I say that “hey I was successful the other day and I will succeed also in the future”. If a person had a formula of success, I will be successful too. If another individual finds a solution to a problem, then me too will be able to get the same results. [synthesized version of Illusion of Sameness]  I am a very optimistic person but I don’t dwell so much of what the future looks like. What I do instead is “do the best I can at the moment”. Having said that in a very broad context – it can be anything else I am currently interested. It can be my job, my relationship, my friendship, my reading, my research, my hobbies, my sports, my downtime, my thinking process, my problem solving etc.

Saturday’s ride was hard.  I started so energetic and as always on a long distance bike ride, the activity ended with full body exhaustion – nothing left in my leg at mile56.  I think when a person reaches a certain point of exhaustion, there is no more distinction.  I was just tried and there is no numerical scale that I can describe it.  When I got home, I checked my weather app  and it was 97’F – no wonder.  Looking back now, If I had known that the weather will be that high, I might have avoided the heat by changing my route or choosing a an alternate time to ride  or shorten the ride– but I did not.

I seldom checks the weather when I go out riding.  I have several reasons for this but the most important aspect is – “If I check the weather, a bias will linger in my mind that will put a limit to my capacity of accomplishing something that I want to do.”   It happened to me last year at the 2014 Outlaw 100 bike ride [view report here].   I did not know that there was a storm in the morning of October 11, 2014.  The event organizer delayed the ride that morning and after 1 hour of waiting they cancelled the event.  Surprisingly/daringly, I end up riding the 100miles by myself with no food and water at any rest stops.

Uncertainty can surprise us  – that is “we have strengths we never knew we had”.  Too much glimpse of the future can plant a seed of doubt, therefore limiting us in some way.

I don’t really checks the weather when I go out riding, instead I made sure that I have provisions for the journey like 2 water bottles, 3 clif bars, 2 spare tubes, bike tools and knows the route where a gas station is located just in case I need an electrolyte refill.

If I Have a Heart …

I shared a report a few days back about my recovering heart that it is able to beat faster than my normal post MI.  Yesterday, on my my treadmill at home, I want to find out if the story is still  valid.  My goal was to run intervals of 200 meters [half a lap] between a slow pace and high pace reaching up to 7mph on the treadmill.   Disregard the twin towers at the beginning of the workout because I think the Mio Global watch was not tight enough causing a reading anomaly.  There are two peaks at the very end of the workout, those are the hard test that I executed to validate the fitness of my heart.

image

Conclusion: My heart is fit for green zone training – that is, 130 to 150 bpm range for my age group.

If I have a heart like yours, I will ………….. [you finish the sentence yourself].  The antidote to stress is not relaxation – it is exercise.

NOTES: Shift of My Heart-Day1832 +Endurance Formula

Shift of My Heart-Day1832
It’s been 5 years since my Stent #2 [tags: cardiac notes] and I’m still waiting and expecting Stent #3 soon. But I’m a half-full type of person so I will look at the brighter side instead.  Many months ago, I’ve noticed during my bike rides that my heart rate can never go above 125 bpm [beat per minute] no matter how hard the effort or the workload is.  Yesterday, I was totally surprised that my heart rate went up in the “green zone” [130 bpm] on the first climb [see Fig 1 at the beginning].  I had been pacing/limiting myself during my bike rides thinking that my heart did not fully recovered from my myocardial infarction in 2008.  I’m still in recovery mode and will not execute abrupt changes in my exercise soon.  Having the heart rate data available is really a plus for a cardiac patient.  It is important that I don’t over exert myself in my endurance training.  I will run another test this week and see if the data below is not just an anomaly and after that – heavy training is coming.

Endurance Formula
I came across a formula for long term relationship from Stosny’s book Living and Loving [youtube webinar]. Long term relationship = Passion + Intimacy. p160  But the topic that I’m sharing is about swimming and cycling endurance and not love relationship.  That will be your homework – to prove that LTR = P + I is true or not.  The “I” is very important. No wonder one-night stand seldom lasts…

“Passion is the fast food of love, immediately gratifying and filled with
calories but with little of the nutritional value of true intimacy. In
terms of relationship function, passion brings us together, but intimacy
keeps us together; passion moves us, but intimacy makes us grow.
Hence they dominate different stages of relationships, with intimacy
becoming prominent as passion wanes. This fact is hardly surprising.
The nuance of intimacy—truly knowing another person—can
scarcely emerge in the thrall of passion.” Stosny Living and Loving

While swimming today for 1 hour and 20 minutes, I have to think of something beautiful and challenging to occupy my mind during the long and boring swim.  Today, I asked myself, “why am I doing this swim, it is 90”F in the pool and it is so boring”.  A 2.4mile swim in a pool is easy in terms of physical effort, the pool is only 25 yards long but the hardest task is “mental” –  which is surviving the boredom of swimming.  In cycling it is easy for me to switch to a good song and sing along [yes, I sing during bike rides ;-{] or listen to TED Talks or change the route to make the ride interesting.  Swimming for >1 hour non-stop is just not a very interesting exercise.  While doing all the inquiries in my mind during today’s swim, I came home with the following formula synthesized from the LTR=P+I.  I am not going to explain each item because I think the definition is very clear.

Why use formula?  I started using formula lately just to keep myself reminded of what the solution of a specific problem is.  It is hard to remember the stuff you learn without having a systematic way of memorizing facts.  Once a formula is created, anyone can just simply recall the keyword and then attempt to regulate or investigate or define the underlying variables on how to cope, on how to solve or how to endure life.  Please note that the formula mentioned here has fine prints, use at your own risk or craziness level!

Endurance=Passion + Knowledge + Fitness + Ability
Endurance-The power to withstand hardship or stress
Passion-A strong feeling or emotion
Knowledge-having extensive information or understanding; possessing or exhibiting knowledge, insight, or understanding; intelligent; well-informed; discerning; perceptive.
Fitness – Good physical condition; being in shape or in condition
Ability-Possession of the qualities (especially mental qualities) required to do something or get something done

FIELD REPORT: 2014 Outlaw 100 Miles; Day1561/Year4.2

I’m on chapter 10 of the book called Thinking, Fast and Slow [google search] and I had a dilemma at the start of the Outlaw 100.  Notice also that I’ve studied MLA [Myopic Loss Aversion] lately and was able to understand why people are “risk averse”, aversion is “a feeling of in intense dislike”. We tend to avoid risks most of the time.  We have this “comfort zone” and we love to stay there for as long as we want to. “Hey, I just wanted to play/be safe”,  those are our normal comments when facing an ordeal or a critical decision opportunity.

Please click the two links that I mentioned above and dwell on the subject for a long while and try to understand System1 and System2.  You can get the paperback copy of the book  from Amazon for $9.99. I would say that I wish I’ve known the subject when I was in my 20’s.  Being 48 is not too late yet, so I must start fighting MLA now – whatever it takes and whatever is the subject.

Back to my Outlaw 100 topic, I’ve trained all year for this event, I’ve done 56miles bike ride every week and had been primed to continue the tradition of doing 100 Miles every year as part of my heart recovery program.  For those of you who don’t me yet, I became a cardiac patient in December of 2008, I was 42 when I had my heart attack, that was my Stent#1, Stent#2 followed in July of 2010, and it’s been Day 1561 since my trip to the cardiac cath lab in 2010.  I was already a very active cyclist and swimmer years before the cardiac event happened.  I thought at first that being a cardiac patient will cripple my mind to avoid doing what I love – cycling, swimming and occasionally running.  But then the trend became opposite  of what I expected.  I became a risk taker.  I figured out that I’m already considered as “damaged good” and there is no other way but “up” in my situation. If I stay in bed/home all day and be safe, what is the value to that?  But…what if I do something opposite and take all the risks that I’m presented to, what do you think will happen?  This is the story of my life.

Disclaimer: Please do not mimic my actions. ;-( )

Dilemma at the start of the Outlaw 100:
1. Heavy rains and lightning at 0800, the start of the ride.
2. Outlaw 100 sponsor hinting the participants of a delayed start at 10pm and possibly cancel the event.
3. I had 2 water bottles to last 100 miles
4. I had 3 clif bars and 3 powergels to feed myself of the entire 100 miles journey

My decision:
1. Start at 0830 solo ride
2. Face the heavy rain and possible lightning
3. Conserve food and water for 100 miles [roughly 7-8 hours]

Outcome:
1. Finished the 100 miles solo ride safely
2. Satisfaction of doing the 100 miles solo, the event was cancelled,  I did not know this until my arrival at the finish line at 1600, no one was there.

Conclusion:
1. Take risk sometimes, you will never know the outcome until you get out from your comfort zone. The rain stopped pouring on the second hour, which made the ride so enjoyable because of the cooler temperature and very gentle wind speed.

2. Don’t over think the situation. If your objective of the day is finish the 100 miles, do it anyway even if the whole world is against you.

3. Patience and persistence is a must have when placed in a difficult situation.  Press on no matter what.  The greatest mistake one can make – giving up.

FMEA: 88mm Chinese Carbon Wheelset – Baixiang

Objectives:
1. To upgrade the Time Trial Bike with aerodynamic wheelset at a lower cost.
2. To find out if the lower cost of a product  does not necessarily mean a sacrifice of quality and function
3. Just being curious about how an unknown international business like Baixiang can compete with a branded and well established factory of expensive carbon bicycle wheelset.

Notes:
1. This is my personal notes of the product and I am not motivated by any means to receive compensation or perks from Baixiang. Although Wendy reminded me that I have a 1 year warranty of the product if the damage is a factory defect that pertains to quality.

2. I am comparing this carbon wheelset with my 4 years old Mavic Cosmic Carbone SL which at this time had not failed me yet for any single time.

3. My Saturday rides is around 55 miles, I will be evaluating this product during my 50 miler weekend training ride.  I’m also scheduled to ride on the annual Outlaw 100 in Georgetown Texas which I am planning to do the 100Mile route [the usual].

My AMAZON Review
I was looking for a backup wheelset for my time trial bike which had a set of Mavic Carbone Cosmic SL on it but I don’t want to over spend. I did my research and looked at several vendors from youtube and ebay but I could not trust ebay or anywhere else other than Amazon.  I was assuming that Amazon did their homework about their international vendors and if the purchase goes negative, I have Amazon to confront for return or exchange.  I was skeptic a little bit of what I’m getting and they always said that "you get what you paid for".  [I paid less and I’m still satisfied]

It’s too early to tell if the product will pass my 2000 miles reliability test [around 1 year of testing] but so far I had >100 miles on the wheelset and it had not failed me yet.  I ride in Austin, Texas Hill Country back roads and the roads are not that smooth.  I am hoping that this wheelset will fail within one year so that I can get a replacement from Baixiang as promised by Wendy, the ever caring Chinese lady who follows up the ordering, shipping and health status of the product. Yes, my plan is to really test this wheelset to its limit just like how I rode my expensive Mavic Carbone wheelset every week for more than 4 years now.

My Custom Order:
1. All black
2. Bladed aero spokes

I installed a 700cx25 Gatorskin Tire.

POSITIVE:
1. Price
2. 88mm is designed with aerodynamics in mind.
3. The weight of the bike remained the same as compared to my old Mavic wheelset but the deep 88mm rims made a difference in terms of aerodynamics.
4. No cracks, broken nipple or wobble yet at Mile100.
5. I love headwind and crosswind now.
6. I’m in love with my bike again. It seems like the aerodymic wheelset is my virtual source of power.
7. Customer Service [Wendy] was always there for every email questions I had.

NEGATIVE:
1. Scary on downhill and crosswind flat ride, the 88mm deep rim function like a sail.  It felt like I was on a sailboat.
2. The extender that came with the purchase did not satisfy my quality assurance.  I am using the Topeak Presta Valve Extension. You have to get this extender because they only manufacture an 80mm tubes.  http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001M82ZHA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=2WP65ECF326V9&coliid=IFTLA1HE4W43U
3. My bike is now noisy, maybe because of the deep rims but it is not a functional failure.  Anyone can notice now that I am attacking the peloton ;-(). But hey, this is a TTBike and meant to be used on a solo ride.
4. I’m getting a weird look from people.  I guess they have not seen a bike like this one in the neighborhood.  [Coolness effect was high]
5. I stopped riding my indoor trainer in exchange for a 15Mile time trial after work.  I even installed an LED light for my night ride.

Read more about my unpacking, inspection and reliability test.  If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask in the blog.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. Use the 88m Rims on TTBike only, you need an aero bar to fully benefit from the aerodynamic design of the wheelset.
2. If 100 miles does not convince you of the reliability of the product, then wait for my 2000 miles test.

SATISFACTION RATING:
As of 20140901, Very Satisfied.

Heart Function Study with MIO Alpha Strapless HRM

Diminished Heart Function
December of 2008 when I had my MI, it took me a longer time to accept the fact that my heart function had diminished.  I used to be able to push my heart rate to somewhere around 150-160 bpm on the bike.  Recently, I’ve noticed that I can barely get to 130bpm on a small hill climb.  I’ve asked my cardiologist for an explanation as to why my heart rate does not go above 130bpm and he just told me not to worry about it and mentioned that it might be due to my heart meds.  I can still exert an sustainable effort for >3-4 hours of cycling without slowing down – but just not good on hill climbs.

Nuclear Heart Stress Test
When I had my first Nuclear Stress Test right after my MI, I did not know how to interpret the images below.  During my 2nd Nuclear Stress test, I did some research beforehand on how to interpret the post stress test images.  Normally, the cardiologist will only show you the images very briefly – maybe at most two minutes and  does not dwell too much on the explanation.  With my limited knowledge about the interpretation of  test results,  I was able to to take a quick glance of the images [like a spy agent] trying to memorize the images and later did my own interpretation. I discovered that I had a portion of my heart not receiving enough blood flow during the stress test.  This means that my heart is not the way as it was before the heart attack at the age of 42 [present, 47]. I now humbly accepted the fact that my heart is never the same as compared to the pre-MI days.  Mostly doctors will not openly discuss that type of information because it does not really help the cardiac patient mentally to know that the heart function had diminished or had somewhat lost its ability to work.  Doctors only care about how the patient is able to function back to normal life without chest pains or shortness of breath.

Some patients don’t need to know that type of in depth information regarding heart function but being an active person as I am, I should know my body especially my heart function so that I can detect or predict my next MI or coming sign of death because I am not a normal person – I do weird and abnormal activities like a 25 second subsurface swim using 0 breath, or >40Miles bike ride alone every Saturday or 2.4 Mile swim.

Here’s some information regarding Nuclear Stress Test:
http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/352401-overview#aw2aab6b5
Cardiac-SPECT Information

Below is an example of a Nuclear Test result.  You don’t need to know more…it’s just for show and tell for other interested readers.  A healthy heart should have the same/or almost the same pre and post stress test images. Note: this is not my the picture of my heartimage

Beating of my heart!

This entry is not about my previous MI, those are the old story.  I took the oath of acceptance already with the fact that I will never be able to get back to my previous fitness level on the bike or much more run a 10K and I should drop my Ironman aspirations.  Yes, I can bike 100Miles and swim 2.4Miles at a comfortable pace but at this moment, to even run a mile, my heart rate shoots up to 130bpm and I’m already maxing out.  I’ve already accepted the fact that I will remain to be a long distance swimmer and a cyclist  and not a runner, I think I can live with that.

I am sharing to everyone my “heart experience” because as you all know – you have one in your chest too.

I want to raise awareness here about how important our heart is, neglecting the health of your heart can mean life or death – meaning – you are in big trouble unless you have good collateral arteries.  I’ve been advocating for cardiac knowledge here in this journal since the beginning of this blog and also sharing these stories at work and to everyone who listens and I am really surprised that no one really paying attention about cardio exercise.  Some will just say “I exercise but does not really pay attention too much about heart rates” or some people will say “I’m ok, I don’t need to exercise”.

I understand that not everyone has access to heart rate monitors, a bike or swimming pool or a treadmill.  But I want to challenge and stir up my readers to at least attempt to raise your heart rate to an “uncomfortable level” daily.  It is very important to know that your heart can take up the load at some point.  Please don’t wait for a cardiologist to tell you that you really need to do a regular cardio workout.  You can start now.  Take a brisk walk or run for at least 10 minutes and then later on advance to a longer workout at the same intensity or a bit higher.

It’s not too late to save your heart.

Findings/Observation/Notes:
The Heart Rate table listed below are unique to my body.  There is no standard  values to compare to, so please don’t compare your data to mine.  I am male, 47, long distance cyclist, swimmer and a cardiac patient since age 42.

Why I Don’t Take Vacation? [very often]

1. I travel 40 miles every week.
2. I feel the energy of the sun for almost 3 hours.
3. I smell the road and hear the danger of the cars beside me when they pass so closely.
4. I meditate and pray during the lonely miles in the middle of nowhere
5. When I arrive back home, it feels like I was in a real vacation.
6. i feel alive thinking that no accident had happened in my 40 miles of travel.

Holy Is Our King

I played this song in repeat mode in my Spotify app on my phone while doing my 40mile bike ride today.  When I left the house, I clicked the “play” button and listened to this song over and over for almost 3 hours.  When I got back to the house right at the front door, the music ended at the very last note where I started and my mileage was right at 40.09 miles.

Then an impression in my heart told me “Just so you know, I’m with you and I received your worship”.

I was so tired and dying and my only wish was “just get me home”, temperature was close to 95’F.

Little things like this one elevates my faith one more notch.

Angels gather round your throne
and around your throne they bring
Praises to the Living Word
To the awesome One they sing

Crying Holy…Holy…Holy..Is our King.

Elders bowing at your feet
And at your feet, they bend their knees.
All creatures on the earth below
Bow before you now.

Crying Holy…Holy…Holy..Is our King.

Magnificent

I had 4 hours of sleep and Monday is my 40Mile cycling day. I had to do something in the first 2 hours of my waking hours.  My watch said 12:10pm [Austin, Texas time] and the temperature outside reads 91’ F. I had two choices, skip cycling or just go no matter what.  When I left home, I had my doubts if I will be able to make it back.  I know my chest pains are somewhat back [I’m a cardiac patient at Day773 on Stent#2] and there is always that feeling that this is the day that I will not come back – I did it anyway.  I turned on my Spotify app in my Android phone and plug in my ear buds and tuned in to Matt Redman’s album.  At mile18, this song below [Magnificent] touched my heart. I stopped and placed the song in ‘repeat’.  Temperature rising and I could feel that this the worst day to ride 40 miles.  As the lyrics of the song started to soaked in, I feel weaker and weaker as I pedal steadily in a comfortable pace but then spiritually I felt something strange and it was beautiful.  I cannot stop, I cannot give up and I was determined to be back home. I was imagining what a great way to die – worshipping God in the Spirit.  I only had one prayer.  Lord, “just get me home”.  I pressed on as the song played over and over and I started to regain my strength until I reached home.

When I got home, I  looked up the true meaning of the word “magnificent” and the lyrics of the song – one thing I can say honestly from the bottom of my broken heart – He is Magnificent.

You show Your majesty
In every star that shines
And every time we breathe
Your glory, God, revealed
From distant galaxies
To here beneath our skin

You are higher than we ever could imagine
And closer than our eyes could ever see
You are…

(CHORUS)
Magnificent, You alone are holy
No one else as glorious as You
Magnificent, Jesus You are worthy
Who can shine as brightly as You do?
Magnificent
You’re so magnificent

You’re lighting up our lives
Illuminate our hearts
With everything You are

You are higher than we ever could imagine
And closer than our eyes could ever see
You are…

CHORUS

You are higher than we ever could imagine
And closer than our eyes could ever see
We are pouring out our hearts here in Your presence

Milestone: Swim-Bike: 2011-2012

To TripleB,
It’s been Day669 since stent #2 and I’m still waiting for the DDay.  I guess there is no really celebration of each day passing.  It can happen again or not.  What is exciting about this journey of being a cardiac patient is the more I spend time on the road and at the pool, the more risk I’m taking and the more fun it gets – facing the uncertainty.  I have not seen my cardiologist for over a year now and I have no idea if my body is in perfect condition.  My only measurement data that I considered myself fit is I can go on long rides with not much effort.  At the pool, I normally starts out with a sub-surface swim of 25 yards  with one breath.  I think I am fit enough to live another day.

WHO:
WHAT: 2009 Outlaw 100

What went well?
You’ve heard this before… A long journey starts with the first mile.  I personally don’t like to drive greater than 50 miles from home and can you imagine 100 miles of pedal power. People ask WHY and maybe you are wondering what is the reason why I am doing it every year.  A friend reminds me of the answer to this type of question – you have to experience it.   Endurance event requires so much from our body and mind.  There are so many reason why people do it and the most common reason is simple – “because I can”.  My motivation is “research” and most likely that is the reason why I end up in the hospital last year after swimming long distance in a 65 degrees pool.  I want to know what my body can do and cannot do.  I want to know where my limits are.  I want to know if I can push my body while I am also working on a regular job and helping the kids at school and love a wife at the same time without being stressed out.  My research work can be found at my Sharepoint site so feel free to take a peek of what is going on with my experiments.

14. Total RPM = 33,600 RPM (no. of pedal strokes)

What didn’t go so well?
Being lost for ~10 miles, lost at least 45 minutes from the normal route.  To me this is a plus, more is better.  If we were not able to get back to the correct route, it could have been a disaster.  Unknowingly, being lost produces one friendship.

What would you do differently next time?
None

Conclusion:
I was satisfied with my overall performance considering I suffered a heart attack last year (Dec 22, 2008). Being able to test my heart capacity and capability will boost my confidence back to my aging body.  I am 43, young at heart and mind but when you encounter a devastating heart illness, the knowledge alone that I am able to get back to my normal routine is very encouraging.  I don’t trust my body anymore.  I am doing the best I can to help me avoid any medical problems but sometimes there are things that can happen to us that we don’t understand.  If you really look at my life 10 years from today, you will see how I took care of myself physically.  I don’t celebrate victories regarding physical accomplishments anymore, this event means nothing to me because last year, I participated the same event (October 18th, 2008) and in December, I stayed 3 days in ICU.  I am not hesitating to mention the word “heart attack” anywhere in my journal because I choose myself to become an ambassador for healthy heart awareness.  I am doing all these with only one purpose in mind – to create awareness of a healthy lifestyle.  I am trying to go through the motion of staying healthy and maybe one day, a few friends of mine will do the same.  Yes, staying fit is doable even if you have a full time job.  There are countless benefits of exercise and often times I heard excuses from friends that they don’t have time and they are so busy or they are too tired or I am not going to change because I am just so satisfied with who I am or I work night shift or I always come home late.  I don’t know about your “death readiness” – are you ready to go at any moment?  Will you ignore the things that you can do now that will help you in the future?  Me? I am in the bonus life already.  I live each day as if it is my last.  You haven’t been to the edge of dying yet.  Start something…do something.

To my loving, caring and adorable wife Britta, to Brittney and Brent, I hope that what I did yesterday delete all your worries about my health.  There were so many restrictions placed upon me after I was released from the hospital that Christmas of 2008 and I know that there were millions of worries running through your mind that week. May this event gain back the idea that I am well physically.  I don’t want you to worry too much about me.  In fact, I should be the one thinking about your health.  To my mother – Mom, I am perfectly fine, to my other mother in CA, yes, I am okay, to all my sisters who are so concerned about my health, I am in full recovery.  To all my my friends who really cares, thank you all for praying and thinking about me.

I do hope that one day I will receive a message telling me – “I am exercising now everyday”.

Health Report At 4800 Hours Uptime

I’ve been alive now for 4800 hours and it feels good.  The first hour is still so vivid to me.  I can still feel my first day at work, it was like a walk in space where I did not really know if I will be able to last for 12 hours.  Here’s my Mind Map MI Recovery

Not too many of you know of what happened to me last December 22 of 2008. I had a myocardial infarction (just google it if you don’t know) after being so active for years in cycling and swimming and being careful with what I put into my mouth.  I’ve been looking for answers why I had an MI (in the physical aspect) but if you look at my health data and my exercise log and my family history, none of those indicators points towards MI.  So I give up in looking for physical answers of the incident and moved to a spiritual aspect of it or shall I call it non-physical reasons.  Even my cardiologist could not give me a straight answer why.

Non-Physical Reasons:
1. Serve as a warning to the world that heart disease is real (even with active people) (#1 Killer in the US)
2. If it happens to the guy that exercise and eat healthy, it can happen to those that don’t
3. Example to the world that one can recover from MI and live happily ever after (I hope so)

Weight lost=9 lbs since the BC diet

HDL Cholesterol=51
LDL Cholesterol=55

I am sharing these information to all of you so that you can take a positive action towards a better health.  We cannot be complacent anymore towards health. Do something healthy for your body.  I only give myself 24 hours, my view in life is now different and I don’t trust my body anymore and I am not even sure if I have extra days left here on earth ….  but before I leave town, I just want to make sure that I am able to share with you my ordeal so that you too will be able to reflect and learn.

If you don’t know your cholesterol, HDL, LDL counts, please go to your family doctor and request a comprehensive physical exam.  These parameters are good indicators for heart disease and not knowing those numbers is putting you at false security that you are healthy because you are just feeling normal.  Also, if you can’t run 1 mile in 12 minutes, you really need to do something ;-()
