#18. Desire To Be With God

“At night my soul longs to be with you, and the spirit in me wants to be with you at the dawn of every new day. When your way of justice comes to the world, people will learn the right way of living.” Isaiah 26:9 ERV

Desire to be with God (not just knowing Him)
We live in a very busy and chaotic world and sometimes we forgot that the existence of a Higher being. We are consumed with our daily chores and hectic to do list. The demands of life sometimes overwhelmed us as we succumb to an enormous responsibilities of being human and the fast pace existence draw us to more countless demands of life and we eventually forgot that there is such a person called God.

A 90+ years old very healthy grandfather once asked by his grandson “Grandpa, why do you move so slow? Grandpa responded, I’m not not going anywhere so there’s no need to rush.” When we are almost finished living in this world, we sometimes think that there is nothing more for us. Kids are successful, there is roof above my head and food in the table and I am living comfortably on my pre-departure phase. I’m just waiting for my time of departure and I’ll be forever gone from this world. Imagine if the Bible did not mention eternity. Imagine if we all just perish at the end of our tenure here on earth. We don’t really know for sure what it’s like after this life but I’d rather be believing that I will be in paradise when I leave earth than imagining that I will be forever gone.

I will always have a desire to be with God… one day. It makes my journey here on earth more interesting and lively and I can face death with great expectation than anything else.

#17. Desire To Know God

A few weeks ago, I came across the book – The Normal Personality by Steven Reiss [read myNotes]. Reiss and his team conducted a comprehensive research regarding the subject “motivation” and his team came up with a list of 16 Desires [see list below].

I don’t disagree with Reiss’ findings but I have an unresolved dilemma — I cannot categorize my “desire to know God” on any of the 16 Desires. I’ve tried Honor and Idealism and then Tranquility but it does not fit quite well.  Watch the interview of Shannon below and then listen to the song over and over and maybe you can help me identify what desires she have as she talks about the story of her song ‘Exalted One’.

So for my own use, I have to add #17, Spirituality, the desire to know God.  Perhaps, being a Christian is not or cannot be considered as Normal Personality. ;-]

Maybe Paul was right when he described Christians as peculiar  people: “Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.” Titus 2:14

“peculiar-beyond or deviating from the usual or expected”

Normal Personality-The Book
If you want to understand who you are, what are your strengths and weaknesses, why are you so different from other people, why sometimes you don’t get along well with other people or your spouse or your significant others – this book is for you.

My Notes
I took some notes and placed it in excel format so that I will be able to see my 16-Desires and what it means in a simple way possible and be able to review quickly for later use.  I could not find a free motivation profile test online so I developed my own [ QuickGuide-NormalPersonality.xls]  using simple excel formulas. This is not an official Reiss Motivation Profile test but I think if you try to answer the Q&A portion on Sheet 1 and 2 slowly and honestly, you will be able to get a good picture of your motivation profile and then understand who you really are.  If you let your spouse/future partner take the test also using worksheet #2, the comparison is plotted side by side in worksheet #3 and match/mismatched are highlighted.

Please read the book first before you deep dive in understanding  about RMP and what the author is trying to convey regarding the 16 Desires that he came up with and why.  The author’s view regarding Freud’s many theories in psychoanalysis are intriguing but has validity and truth.

My objectives in reading the book are to find meaning of failures in life in general and understand why relationship between two initially loving and romantic couple degrades overtime and how to place countermeasures so not to repeat the mistakes of others or to prevent from a life or a relationship disaster to become a second or third occurrence.  Reading the book, knowing the 16 Desires and understanding what it means made my personal understanding better of why I sometimes do certain things or feel.
