For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his life [in the eternal kingdom of God]? For what can a man give as an exchange (a compensation, a ransom, in return) for his [blessed] life [in the eternal kingdom of God]? For whoever is ashamed [here and now] of Me and My words in this adulterous (unfaithful) and [preeminently] sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when He comes in the glory (splendor and majesty) of His Father with the holy angels. Dream: Nick and Ging-ging
Ging-ging T. and Nick P. were married. Ging-ging informed me that Nick stopped coming home to Ormoc because he has a mistress in Manila.  Ging-ging felt bad that he abandoned his family and was really sad.  I talked to Nick and he did not deny.  He just told me “I am already a retired person and have nothing else to do”.

In real life, Ging-ging and Nick are cousins.  I met Ging-ging 20 years ago and we became a distant friend after I moved to the US.  I met Nick here in Texas in November 2010 when he visited Texas.

TIMELINE:
14-Hour Family Ordeal
My daughter is attending college [year#2] at UTSA, University of Texas at San Antonio. San Antonio is 90 miles south from where we are.  She lives with 3 other new roommates at Hill Country Place near UTSA.  She drives a black 2009 Colorado Pickup truck and her apartment is self sustaining [first aid kit, supplies, tools etc.] and she is also highly trained by me.   There was a reason why I created a Go-Kit backpack for light travel and I never expected that the day will come that I will have to use it.  Well, today, my daughter called from her apartment crying and in pain.  I had to make a few critical decision on the fly including deciding to call 911 and letting her go to the emergency room by herself.  As a parent who has no control of the situation, you learn how to use pure wisdom and hoping that whatever you do or say will not complicate things.  Ninety minutes on the road seems like a long time for us who were eager to know if our daughter is safe or not.  Fast forward 14 hours and the ordeal was over.  This is my account on what transpired today 20120910, a day after my 46th Birthday.

Many thanks to Claudia [Brittney’s roommate]

1232, Received a call from my daughter in San Antonio [90miles away from Round Rock], she is in great pain [pt=8, pain threshold] and cannot move. The event happened while she was in the shower. Able to get dressed but unable to move or walk back to bed due to sharp pain in her lower back.
1235, Asked the following questions and her responses: [Brent beside me, Britta was at work]
1. Can you wiggle your right toe? Yes
2. Can you wiggle your left toe? Yes
3. Can you touch your feet and feel sensation? Yes
4. Chest pain check? No chest pain.
5. Breathing check? Breathing fine.
6. Can you raise your right hand? Yes
7. Can you raise your left hand? Yes
8. Can you take one more step? No, pain threshold=8 very unbearable

1237, Fired up WebMD and looked for symptoms “sudden lower back pain”
Result: http://www.webmd.com/back-pain/guide/understanding-back-pain-symptoms

Symptoms of lower back pain:
1. Persistent aching or stiffness anywhere along your spine, from the base of the neck to the tail bone
2. Sharp, localized pain in the neck, upper back, or lower back — especially after lifting heavy objects or engaging in other strenuous activity. (Pain in the upper back can also be a sign of a heart attack or other life-threatening conditions.)
3. Chronic ache in the middle or lower back, especially after sitting or standing for extended periods
4. Back pain that radiates from the low back to the buttock, down the back of the thigh, and into the calf and toes
5. Inability to stand straight without having severe muscle spasms in the low back

Call your doctor  about back pain if
1. You feel numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arms or legs. This may signal damage to the spinal cord.
2. The pain in your back extends downward along the back of the leg. You may be suffering from sciatica.
3. The pain increases when you cough or bend forward at the waist. This can be the sign of a herniated disc.
4. The pain is accompanied by fever, burning during urination, or strong-smelling urine. You may have an infection.
5. You begin to have problems with your bowels or bladder.

Other "red flags" that could point to a serious problem include:
1. A history of cancer.
2. You have been losing weight without trying.
3. You have been on steroids or medication that weakens your immune system.
4. A history of trauma.
5. Pain that is getting worse and does not get better after you rest.
6. A history of IV drug use.

1240, Told her to call 911. I did not want to gamble her health by my “Army combat lifesaver training”  Although she had all the mobility of her toes and fingers and was talking to me on the phone, I had no medical experience to diagnose her and to tell her to sleep on it with anti inflammatory. [I would if it was me]
1246, EMS arrived. Brittney called and asked for final confirmation of ambulance transportation to ER.  EMS declared her non-critical.  Told her to continue transportation to ER
1250, Prepared my Go Kit backpack for light travel and waiting for “Mother Hen” [Britta] , she was working and she wants to come with me.
0100, Talked to EMS tech. Was told formally that daughter is not critical. En route to Methodist Hospital in San Antonio
0110, Britta arrived from work. Packing
0115, Left Round Rock home [Brent staying behind by himself]
0300, En route to San Antonio, Britta talked to Brittney and ER diagnosed her with Lumbar Strain and dismissed her.
0330, Arrived at Methodist Hospital. Brittney waiting at lobby still in pain but was dismissed.  She received a few dose of Motrin and release paper with prescription.
0335, Brittney still in pain and can hardly get inside the front seat.
0345, Drop by at Whataburger.  Hungry! and in Pain!
0400, Back to Brittney’s apartment at Hill Country Place.  Eat then she slept.
0500, Sleep
0600, Sleep
0700-1000, Organize paper works. Planning to leave her at 1400.  Britta has to go back to work tonight.

1100, Nap
1200, Slightly mobile but pain remains at 5
1300, Gave final instructions-“Survive on your own”. Use Motrin 800 and muscle relaxant.  Asked mental questions: ie anxiety and thoughts.
1. She’s worried about missing school.
2. She feels bad that we have to be bothered.
3. She’s worried about the medical expenses.

I told her that a parent will do anything for their children and assured her that this event does not inconvenience us.  This is our job and we are there for her.

1400, Left UTSA for Round Rock
1430, En route to Round Rock halfway, Britta’s Run Flat Indicator was alarming.  Stopped by the gas station and air up all 4 tires. Right rear was –4psi lower but not flat.  I remembered that I don’t have a functioning spare tire.  Took a gamble and drove Toll 130 at 80 mph for 30 minutes to reach Round Rock on time.
1545, Arrived safely.
1600, Drop off Britta so that she can go to sleep.  I drove to Round Rock Outlet to pickup Brent’s clinical uniform.  Also, contacted Mercedes Part/Service, they ordered the missing 4 lug nuts for spare.
1700, Back at home. Waiting for Brent. Unpack
1800, Pickup Brent. Britta left for work
1900, Called Brittney, I was surprised!  She was at Culvers eating ice cream.
2000, Cook for Brent [actually, just reheating some left over pork with cooking oil, scored 10 on the taste]
2100, Writing this journal and listening to Spotify Freedom Is Here by Hillsong United in repeat mode.

Freedom Is Here
By Hillsong

The future comes alive
You speak Your word and I
I’m running into Your hope
Because I’ve seen Your light
You bring my world to life
I’m coming after You love

I’m not shaken
I’m not letting go
And everything comes alive
In my life as we lift You higher
Let Your freedom arise
In our lives as we lift You up
Sing it out
Sing it out
Your freedom is here

So take the limits off
No matter what the cost
I’m running after Your call
And I will run this race
See You face to face
So let Your power overflow

I will not fear
I will not hide You love
You love
All of my life
I cannot deny Your love
Your love

Simple Guides; Day785

For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them].  Philippians 4:8 […read more]

Paul wrote these long time ago but the truth of these things when applied to the fullest extent guarantees a well established life of joy and peace.  This looks like a checklist on how to become the “best person” in the world or the “best leader” or the “best father” or the “best mother” or the “best employee” or maybe just a “best simple servant”.

1. whatever is true, Consistent with fact or reality; not false
2. whatever is worthy of reverence, Regard with feelings of respect and reverence; consider hallowed, exalted or be in awe of
3. whatever is honorable, Not disposed to cheat or defraud; not deceptive or fraudulent
4. whatever is seemly, decent
5. whatever is just, Indicating exactness or preciseness
6. whatever is pure, Free of extraneous elements of any kind
7. whatever is lovely, Appealing to the emotions as well as the eye
8. whatever is lovable, Having characteristics that attract love or affection
9. whatever is kind, A category of things distinguished by some common characteristic or quality
10. whatever is winsome, Charming in a childlike or naive way
11. whatever is gracious, Characterized by charm, good taste, and generosity of spirit
12. if there is virtue, The quality of doing what is right and avoiding what is wrong

Two big headlines today in the local Austin newspaper is about Lance and Samsung.  These are all defeats or it could be victory.  I have no further comment on the subject.

All I know is that there are reasons why the Bible mentioned specifically to set our hopes on the things that we don’t see.  Material things – they perish.  I’m into cycling and I am currently working for Samsung and these news has connection to Austin.

I had a deep “2-minute” conversation with my wife yesterday before she left for work as part of my “power listening’ exercise and asked her what she feared most.  She replied – death.  Then she went on and explained to me that not necessarily her own death but the death of her parents is the most dreadful thing that currently bothered her.  My wife sometimes wakes up in the middle of her sleep in “panic mode” because she’s having a bad dream regarding her parents.  I listened to her attentively as she told me how these things bothered her a lot.  I paused  for a minute and then explained to her that death is not the end of life but the beginning of life.  There is a better place  waiting for us after our tenure here on earth.  There is hope after life.  We are not going away.  We are going to place that is prepared for us.  Death is not the end but the beginning of life.

Word in the Heart; Day779

Let the word [spoken by] Christ (the Messiah) have its home [in your hearts and minds] and dwell in you in [all its] richness, as you teach and admonish and train one another in all insight and intelligence and wisdom [in spiritual things, and as you sing] psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, making melody to God with [His] grace in your hearts. Colossians 3:16 […read more]

The Word-the Bible resides in our heart and mind
The Purpose-to teach, admonish and train one another through Praise and Worship

Barnes on Col 3:16 –
Let the word of Christ – The doctrine of Christ.

Dwell in you richly in all wisdom
– Abundantly, producing the spirit of true wisdom. That doctrine is adapted to make you wise. The meaning is, that they were to lay up the doctrines of the gospel in their hearts, to meditate upon them; to allow them to be their guide, and to endearor wisely to improve them to the best purpose.

Teaching and admonishing … –
See this explained in the notes at Eph_5:19-20. The only additional thought here is, that their psalms and hymns were to be regarded as a method of “teaching” and “admonishing;” that is, they were to be imbued with truth, and to be such as to elevate the mind, and withdraw it from error and sin. Dr. Johnson once said, that if he were allowed to make the ballads of a nation, he cared not who made the laws. It is true in a more important sense that he who is permitted to make the hymns of a church, need care little who preaches, or who makes the creed. He will more effectually mould the sentiments of a church than they who preach or make creeds and confessions. Hence, it is indispensable, in order to the preservation of the truth, that the sacred songs of a church should be imbued with sound evangelical sentiment.

When Panic Attacks; Day777; Brent 16

Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they?  Matthew 6:26 […read more]

I have to educate myself regarding the subject “Panic Attacks”.  I have a few friends who come to my inner circle once in a while and we discuss some of their problems [friendly counseling only, not professional].  They explained to me that when the panic attack episode happens, it’s like the end of the world to them.  Symptoms are rapid heart rate, can’t breath, blurry vision, confused,  unable to think clearly, feel like dying, helpless, knees are weak and unable to stand.  I was puzzled by this panic attack subject for weeks.  I have no idea that this thing existed and I never heard of it before.  So, I did my research and started reading a few articles. I end up collecting quite a few materials.  I’ve read the following books/articles:  "Transforming the Mind", "Prisoner of Our Thoughts"“US Army Manual” , Medscape , eMedicine and then a book by Dr. David Burns “When Panic Attacks” .  I gained a lot of knowledge about the subject after a few months of research but at the end of all my efforts of learning on how to deal with somebody whose mind is not stable, I still came up empty handed.  I talked to them, gave them my advice, told them to seek professional help, get some counseling from an expert.   They listened but then in a few months, I’ll hear them again telling me the same old stories – the panic attack is still there.

One day in my daily prayer, I asked God, “What is your solution to Panic Attacks?  I waited for days for the answer until one day, in a still small voice He replied – “My Word is enough!  You don’t have to read all that” and I was led to Matthew 6 .   I studied the whole chapter  that day and surely all the answers were there.  All the components of how to live a healthy and sound life are mentioned in the chapter.

I don’t want to breakdown the message for you on Matthew 6.  I want you to see it for yourself.  Grab a pen and piece of paper and start writing down the key points.

Be blessed!
ra

P.S. I don’t want to discredit the medical community for trying to fix this type of disorder. Panic Disorder is a fully identified illness, heavily researched and it is real. Those materials mentioned here are good source of knowledge and sometimes are effective. They have their places in the therapy and I love knowing the science of it.  Feel free to skim some of my notes here.  They are interesting.

Starting Point; Day774

But it is from Him that you have your life in Christ Jesus, Whom God made our Wisdom from God, [revealed to us a knowledge of the divine plan of salvation previously hidden, manifesting itself as] our Righteousness [thus making us upright and putting us in right standing with God], and our Consecration [making us pure and holy], and our Redemption [providing our ransom from eternal penalty for sin].  1Corinthians 1:30 […read more]

wisdom-The trait of utilizing knowledge and experience with common sense and insight [insight from above]
righteousness-Adhering to moral principles
consecration-A solemn commitment of your life or your time to some cherished purpose (to a service or a goal)
redemption-the act of delivering from sin or saving from evil

There are three types of wisdom: […more]

The wisdom of God (I Corinthians 2:6-7)
The wisdom of the world (I Corinthians 2:6)
The wisdom of man (Ecclesiastes 1:16-18)

The gift of the word of wisdom is the application of knowledge that God gives you ( I Corinthians 2:6-7). This type of wisdom is a gift which cannot be gained through study or experience and should by no means try to replace them. The gift of the word of wisdom is seeing life from God’s perspective. As a Christian exercises this gift, he begins to develop a fear of the Lord. This is the "beginning of wisdom" according to Proverbs 1:7.

The gift of the word of wisdom is also the revealing of prophetic future; it is speaking hidden truths of what is not known. It is a supernatural perspective to ascertain the divine means for accomplishing God’s will in a given situation, and is a divinely given power to appropriate spiritual intuition in problem solving.

Furthermore, this gift involves having a sense of divine direction, being led by the Holy Spirit to act appropriately in a given set of circumstances, and rightly applying knowledge.

The gift of wisdom is the wisdom of God. It is the supernatural impartation of facts; it is not natural. You can’t earn it. It is received from God through prayer (Ephesians 1:17).

The gift of the word of wisdom works interactively with the other two revelation gifts: knowledge and discernment.

What Purpose?; Day773

For Christ died and lived again for this very purpose, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.  Romans 14:9 […read more]

Barnes on Rom 14:9 –
For to this end – For this purpose or design. The apostle does not say that this was the “only” design of his death, but that it was a main purpose, or an object which he had distinctly in view. This declaration is introduced in order to confirm what he had said in the previous verse, that in all circumstances we are the Lord’s. This he shows by the fact that Jesus died “in order” that we “might” be his.

And rose – This expression is rejected by most modern critics. It is wanting in many manuscripts, and has been probably introduced in the text from the margin.
And revived – There is also a variation in the Greek in this place, but not so great as to change the sense materially. It refers to his “resurrection,” and means that he was “restored to life” in order that he might exercise dominion over the dead and the living.

That he might be Lord – Greek. That he might “rule over.” The Greek word used here implies the idea of his being “proprietor” or “owner” as well as “ruler.” It means that he might exercise entire dominion over all, as the sovereign Lawgiver and Lord.

Both of the dead – That is, of those who “are” deceased, or who have gone to another state of existence. This passage proves that those who die are not annihilated; that they do not cease to be conscious; and that they still are under the dominion of the Mediator. Though their bodies moulder in the grave, yet the spirit lives, and is under his control. And though the body dies and returns to its native dust, yet the Lord Jesus is still its Sovereign, and shall raise it up again:
“God our Redeemer lives,
And often from the skies.
Looks down and watches all our dust,
Till he shall bid it rise.”
It gives an additional sacredness to the grave when we reflect that the tomb is under the watchful care of the Redeemer. Safe in his hands, the body may sink to its native dust with the assurance that in his own time he will again call it forth, with renovated and immortal powers, to be for ever subject to his will. With this view, we can leave our friends with confidence in his hands when they die, and yield our own bodies cheerfully to the dust when he shall call our spirits hence. But it is not only over the “body” that his dominion is established. This passage proves that the departed souls of the saints are still subject to him; compare Mat_22:32; Mar_12:27. He not only has “dominion” over those spirits, but he is their protector and Lord. They are safe under his universal dominion. And it does much to alleviate the pains of separation from pious, beloved friends, to reflect that they depart still to love and serve the same Saviour in perfect purity, and unvexed by infirmity and sin. Why should we wish to recall them from his perfect love in the heavens to the poor and imperfect service which they would render if in the land of the living?

And living –
To the redeemed, while they remain in this life. He died to “purchase” them to himself, that they might become his obedient subjects; and they are bound to yield obedience by all the sacredness and value of the price which he paid, even his own precious blood; compare 1Co_6:20, “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s;” 1Co_7:23; Rev_14:4 (Greek, “bought”); 1Pe_2:9, (Greek, “purchased”). If it be asked how this “dominion over the dead and the living” is connected with the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus, we may reply,
(1) That it is secured over Christians from the fact that they are “purchased” or “ransomed” by his precious blood; and that they are bound by this sacred consideration to live to him. This obligation every Christian feels 1Pe_1:18, and its force is continually resting on him. It was by the love of Christ that he was ever brought to love God at all; and his deepest and tenderest obligations to live to him arise from this source; 2Co_5:14-15.
(2) Jesus, by his death and resurrection, established a dominion over the grave. He destroyed him that had the power of death, Heb_2:14, and triumphed over him; Col_2:15. Satan is a humbled foe; and his sceptre over the grave is wrested from his hands. When Jesus rose, in spite of all the power of Satan and of people, he burst the bands of death, and made an invasion on the dominions of the dead, and showed that he had power to control all.
(3) this dominion of the Lord Jesus is felt by the spirits on high. They are subject to him because he redeemed them; Rev_5:9.
(4) it is often revealed in the Scriptures that “dominion” was to be given to the Lord Jesus as the reward of his sufferings and death; see the Joh_17:2, Joh_17:4-5; 5:26-29 notes; Phi_2:5-11 notes; Eph_1:20-21 notes; Heb_2:9-10; Heb_12:2 notes. The “extent” of his dominion as mediator is affirmed, in this place, only to be over the dead and the living; that is, over the human race. Other passages of the Scripture, however, seem to imply that it extends over all worlds.

And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [of your own doing, it came not through your own striving], but it is the gift of God; Ephesians 2:8   […read more]

But, on the contrary, as the Scripture says, What eye has not seen and ear has not heard and has not entered into the heart of man, [all that] God has prepared (made and keeps ready) for those who love Him [who hold Him in affectionate reverence, promptly obeying Him and gratefully recognizing the benefits He has bestowed]. Believe God Exist; Day769; Berlin Wall Lessons

And he who believes in (has faith in, clings to, relies on) the Son has (now possesses) eternal life. But whoever disobeys (is unbelieving toward, refuses to trust in, disregards, is not subject to) the Son will never see (experience) life, but [instead] the wrath of God abides on him. [God’s displeasure remains on him; His indignation hangs over him continually.] [Hab. 2:4.]  John 3:36

believe- (verb) accept as true; take to be true

Everyday, I’m finding tiny reasons to spend a few minutes of my time reading the Bible, study the daily devotional and most of all observing my daily life.  I take time to examine what went on during my full waking hours and at the end of the day I reflect and pause for a few minutes to see what surprises I have at hand. Today is no different and I’m not surprised anymore.  The scriptures that I studied daily is taken from Billy Graham’s daily devotional website.  Those are preset scriptures that has been planned/put together long time ago by his team or Billy Graham himself.  But the life that I’m living is random – the things that I do or the books that I read or the materials that is coming into my lap or the people that I interact daily are not .  But many times throughout my Christian life, I get this two things in alignment by itself.  What I mean by that? – the scriptures that I am studying coincides to what I am experiencing in my daily life in real time [Input-Output alignment].  How do you explain that?  Say for instance today, the scripture is from John 3:36, I study the scripture first thing in the morning and later in the day I came across p.246 of the book that I’m reading and then tells me to watch a video called Berlin Wall and in that video, a screen comes up with the banner below that reads:

You can’t change the world
But you can change the facts
And when you change the facts
You changes point of view
When you change point of view
You can change the world

My version:
How to change the world?
1. Change point of view [belief system]
2. Transform yourself to a better person
3. Influence one person at a time [at home, at work, a blog reader]
4. Change the person
5. That person repeats Step #3
6. The world changes – one person at a time

Life is exciting when you believe in God.  There is always a surprise.

Berlin Wall, 8th Habit Video #13
I was trying to look for the Berlin Wall video in YouTube that came with the 8th Habit book but unfortunately nothing is posted there.  I have no time to encode the video to .wmv at this time so no video to get the point across.  Anyway, it’s about the Berlin Wall, Germany was divided into two parts by a physical barrier known as the Berlin Wall from 1961 to 1989.  The video emphasized more on the after effect of the fall of the Berlin Wall.  After the fall, two mindsets existed and began to emerged.  Here’s my notes on the video.

Berlin Wall Lessons
1. Barriers in people [not just physical but spiritual/emotional]
2. Wall prevents communication
3. Barrier cannot be broken in a short period of time [slow process]
4. People are different [division exist even after the wall was taken down]
5. We label people even after the barrier is broken [oh, he/she is from the other side]

West Berlin Mindset
1. Luxury
2. Materialistic [buying big house, nice cars]
3. Career
4. Freedom

East Berlin Mindset
1. Insecurity [likes the security of the old regime of wall]
2. Hard time adjusting to the freer country
3. Critical of the new generation
4. Very slow in adapting to the new life

Lesson Learned:
Adapt to the new environment immediately because sooner or later, you will.  Why not just do it!

Divine Source; Day768; Day0001-New Job; Levels of Initiative

For no prophecy ever originated because some man willed it [to do so–it never came by human impulse], but men spoke from God who were borne along (moved and impelled) by the Holy Spirit.  2Peter 1:21

Prophecy:
Knowledge of the future (usually said to be obtained from a divine source)
A prediction uttered under divine inspiration

Intuition:
Instinctive knowing (without the use of rational processes)

Have you ever been in a difficult situation and started thinking that it is a mistake being there.  This phenomena always happen at Mile 001 or Day 001.  I’m in that “confusion state” right now [homeostasis-resistance to change] .  I’ve been with my job for so many years that I can say that all the routines and structures are well in place [I can do my job while sleeping stuff…]. Everything is different now and I have to make some fine tuning on the ways that I spend my time at work.  I’m still with Samsung but this time my department has 7 members only [compared to >50 previously].  I will be spending more time in the office area now than in the factory floor and will be using my creative thinking brain the more.

I am not worried about my job or where I am because I know I was destined to be in this situation. Although at Day001, I had my thoughts of negativity of my new situation but I remember something – when you desire something in your heart-it will be given unto you. Many years ago, I started having an interest in System Thinking and Inventive Problem Solving so I started consuming materials regarding the subject.  I read books, collect articles, try out new methodology to problem solving and started solving difficult problems etc.  I’ve probably over saturated myself now with all the knowledge that I soaked up for a few years and it is time to do it and apply it to real world situation.  I feel like the prophecy has been fulfilled in my life. This is going to be a great start!

I’m almost done with the 8th Habit and learning has been very good.  There are new things that I did not know before that has been explained clearly.  This one caught my attention.  I’m still trying to test out and “self-asking” which level is the best or ideal because if you are in Level 7 and something goes wrong – that is big trouble example: a child make a mistake and a parent ask “Why did you not ask me?”  Take a look.

1. Wait until told.
2. Ask
3. Make a recommendation
4. I intend to
5. Do it and report immediately

Principle-Set Your House In Order; Day766; 5S

IN THOSE days Hezekiah became deadly ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came and said to him, Thus says the Lord: Set your house in order, for you shall die; you shall not recover. [II Chron. 32:24-26; Isa. 38:1-8.]  2Kings 20:1

Set Your House In Order
Many of us may have experience a warning statement in life in the form of a sickness, disease, a cancer, an accident, a near death moment, a loss of love ones, a loss of job, a failed relationship, a failed career, a failed business, a failed body, a failed mind, a broken spirit.  I wish we all receive a warning like this one to tell us that we are dying and the end of life is near.  Don’t expect to hear audible voices telling us what will happen next but expect to see and heed those signs as you progress in life. Life has plenty of road signs especially when are heading towards destruction.

A good way to start putting our chaotic life in order is to use the 5s methodology – SORT, STRAIGHTEN, SHINE, STANDARDIZE-SUSTAIN.  The most important phase is the sustaining part.  Most of us can do the first 4 easily but fails to continue to sustain the changes we make throughout lifetime.

Principle-Talk/Walk Right; Day765; Big Rocks

But if we [really] are living and walking in the Light, as He [Himself] is in the Light, we have [true, unbroken] fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses (removes) us from all sin and guilt [keeps us cleansed from sin in all its forms and manifestations].  1John 1:7

Sometimes we are placed in a difficult situation where we have to come up with life changing “yes or no” answer.  Many times we failed because we neglect to answer a simple question. “Is it the right thing to do?”  I know that I’ve done so many mistakes in life and I know that if only I’ve examined the situation objectively and answer the question, the outcome will be different. Well, past is past and we cannot undo lost opportunities, heartaches, regrets and emotional pain.  What we can do next time is – be careful of whatever we say or do and include a checklist: Right or Wrong? …. then proceed.

I’m on page 174 on the 8th Habit book and so far I’ve gained a lot insights.  The book includes a DVD with video lessons and on video #9-Big Rocks, the author demonstrates an analogy of Big Rocks to Life Priorities. Watch the video first then later on make a list of things that are important to you.  Once you have identified the “important things”  start prioritizing daily and weekly on how you are going to handle the most important things in life-the one that matters most [the Quadrant II stuffs].

Principle-Serve One Master; Day764

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand by and be devoted to the one and despise and be against the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (deceitful riches, money, possessions, or whatever is trusted in). Matthew 6:24

2. One mind
3. One heart
4. One spirit

6. One job

Suffering=Lessons Plus…; Day760; Plan-Do

If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: 2Timothy 2:12

Suffering produces learning.  Often times, our deepest sorrow can brings us great joy.  I’m looking at life in a different lens now.  I’ve seen enough distortion of happiness in my “half life” existence.  What I’ve learned is that when we suffer, there is nowhere else to go but the relief of suffering and when we fail, the only destination is success.

I’m tweaking the format of this journal a little bit.  I’ve learned that there are a few key items that I normally do every day and I don’t want to miss anything.  The PLAN-DO list is from  Deming’s PDCA Cycle.  I figured that every day is a day of Planning and Doing. This helps me become more productive every day.  Also, I’ve noticed that whatever I write on paper or on a whiteboard or in my notebook, sooner or later those actionable items are completed.

Give it a try.

Principle-Be Pure; Day759

Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.  1Timothy 5:22

If the activity is sinful in nature-stay away, do not be a part of it; applicable in most situation in life.
Lust of the eyes-lust of covetousness; delighted with riches and possessions
Lust of the flesh-an evil desire for the things of the flesh; adultery, fornication, pre-marital sex, homosexuality
Pride of Life-craving for honor and applause; a stubborn mindset that refuses to repent and confess their sins; a hardened heart; King of the Hill Syndrome (I am the best mentality), get rid of it.
True remedy-Walk in the Spirit, no other way.  Cannot make these as a to do list-it becomes legalistic and no power.  When we walk in the Spirit, flesh loses its power and dominion

Not EOL; Day755

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.  2Corinthians 5:8

Verses like this one today put courage and excitement to my dilemma of being a cardiac patient.  It’s been 755 days since my stent#2 and I’m still waiting and expecting that the #3 will come and/or there will be no more #3 and my life will come to an end.  Any day now…. and that is how I live my life.  Everyday I wake up with the intention of living a full day as if this is the last one. Yes, I can bike 40 miles and swim 2.4 miles without any struggle but the risk of my stent#3 will always be there in the corner of my eyes.  With this journal, I can honestly tell you that I am not afraid to be absent from this body because I know that when the time comes, it is not the end of life.  “There is more…” is the promise.  There is that expectation of how I will be going to enjoy the presence of god forever when I leave this earth. How exciting!

THEREFORE, SINCE we are justified (acquitted, declared righteous, and given a right standing with God) through faith, let us [grasp the fact that we] have [the peace of reconciliation to hold and to enjoy] peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).  Romans 5:1

The Importance of Checklist

I’ve completed reading The Checklist Manifesto today and my whole perspective of problem solving and dealing with difficult and challenging tasks has changed.  When you get a chance, read the book yourself to gain insights of what a simple checklist can do for you.  I am familiar with a few topics that the author mentioned in the book and I just did not have a profound example of what a real checklist can do in a dire situation.  Reading the book was still a value added activity this week and I wish more topics like this one comes my way.  Knowledge is power, knowledge about the importance of writing a good checklist and doing it are two different things. It is time to take action – create and simplify a checklist.   I have several ideas popping in my mind already about a particular checklist for work related tasks.  Yes, we have Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in place at work but having a simplified checklist in a one-page document I think is far more powerful.  Of course training is required for each individual handling the situation but having a checklist at hand is a great advantage. I need to create a checklist on how to do a checklist for work and home. ;-0

I’ve provided a video link about the investigation/reenactment of Flight 1549 crash landing at Hudson river.  The event showed that executing a well written checklist can save lives.  It’s a long video but be patient and observe how the pilot and the co-pilot handle the deadly event which resulted to zero fatality.

Brent completed a risky driving task today – he drove for at least two hours in various road condition and environment.  The finale of the driving session today was a 12-mile driving in IH35 [interstate highway 35]. It was a little scary at first but as he began to follow the flow of traffic on a Sunday afternoon commute, he feels like he has the skills to be on the road already.  He committed a few minor mistakes but nothing life threatening.  Todays mileage is roughly 80 miles. Kudos to the $9.00 “Student Driver” magnetic sign that I purchased for this training.   The sign provided a simple “STAY AWAY” message when in close proximity driving on a busy road, drivers are not tailgating us any longer.

Presenting + Communicating
At work, we are encouraged to take classes to improve ourselves and one of those classes is the “Presentation Class”. Little did I know that this is a class about public speaking [speech class, sort of] where you come up with random idea and present it to the class. Well, I just found my weakness, I am not good in transferring what my brain is thinking into words. The last segment of the class is a ‘final presentation’ (personal or work related) and present to everybody. I’m good in structure and organization and have a lot of ideas to share. We were taught in the class to write what we want to talk about in a 4×6 index card and use mind mapping to organize what we want to deliver in front of the class. On paper, my presentation was rock solid and filled with structured information. We were given 3 minutes to present in front of the class and when it was my turn, it was a disaster – I could not remember anything that I wrote in my index card. All I know that I had an objective – to present about “Shifting Focus to Warning Signs” (more on this later) after a little scare in the middle of the presentation,I regrouped and I was able to deliver the information without any visual/memory aid. At the end of the presentation, the class evaluated me and made comments and I was surprised that there was not much negative comment about the way I presented the message. Not even one person noticed that I made up all the stuff that I was talking about. Most of the negative comments were about gestures/movement. Positive comments from the instructor were the following:
-love your smile
-facial expression
-great use of voice
-inflection volume
-structure
-eye contact

I am a problem solver and a self-made technical writer and I spend most of my time reading books and analyzing problems, writing technical documentations, failure analysis reports and writing this journal everyday. I love to read electrical/electronic schematics, I love flow charts and I love structuring ideas and put everything in perspective. Speaking to people [or to a person] is not in my blood and If you are working with me, get comfortable with my silence because it will be with us all day. I learned today that speaking is a process – that one has to have the idea in mind to be able to fully deliver the message to the audience. Sound so simple but yet most of us open our mouth without really thinking about delivering a great message. Like anything else, one has to practice speaking to people to be able to communicate clearly and effectively.

So from now on, I will be communicating to people verbally. No more Blind Caveman habits of silence.

I had an extra day off today due to 4th of July holiday.  Britta arrived in Cebu safely although I have not talked to her yet.  I know she’s been taking cared of…. I  just know.  She’s is Cebu for the funeral services of Lola Bebang and Tia Celia. Tia Celia died a few days after Lola [her mother] passed away.  She just arrived from New York to attend the funeral service a few days earlier.  This few weeks has been tragic around my circle lately.  A week ago, a co-worker of mine died inside the Samsung factory.   Death sometimes is like a reminder that life is short and must be experienced at full 100% engagement.

Britta will be away for a few days.  Running the family by myself is not a big deal anymore since the kids are older now and besides Brittney is already driving and can basically function as a good resource for errands if needed.

I have time to write something tonight.  I am inspired to express what’s in my mind right now for some unknown reasons.  While I was reading “Systems Thinking” late this afternoon, I was looking for a new song to listen on my Spotify account.  I came across Lydia Stanley’s song “Sing Hallelujah" and put the song in repeat mode.  There was something in the song that touched my heart [+few tears].  I know something is up so I had to stop reading and I have to research who this Lydia is and her background.  Fast forward a few minutes of web searching, I came across this youtube video of a lady who was unable to walk for 23 years but then suddenly received her miracle and began to walk by herself.  As she started to take her first step, a thought came to me – “Lord, I want to see a miracle like that in my two eyes”.  With the music still in repeat mode and as I was is deep worship, I closed my eyes and then all of a sudden,  flashes of my past miracles came to me like a replayed video tape and I saw the following in detail:
1. My bike accident that almost killed me in 1989
2. When I fell 15ft from the ceiling at General Milling
3. Ormoc flood in 1991 [5000+ dead]
4. My transition job from the US Army to AMD then to Samsung
5. My myocardial infarction in 2008
6. My being able to bike and swim long distance after my heart attack in 2008.

Then, a still small voice whispered  “no need to see a miracle”, you’ve already experienced it…  many times..

I replied, “I know”.

A Different Kind of Life; Day725

But you are not living the life of the flesh, you are living the life of the Spirit, if the [Holy] Spirit of God [really] dwells within you [directs and controls you]. But if anyone does not possess the [Holy] Spirit of Christ, he is none of His [he does not belong to Christ, is not truly a child of God]. Romans 8:9

Wisdom From Above; Day723

But the wisdom from above is first of all pure (undefiled); then it is peace-loving, courteous (considerate, gentle). [It is willing to] yield to reason, full of compassion and good fruits; it is wholehearted and straightforward, impartial and unfeigned (free from doubts, wavering, and insincerity).  James 3:17

Keys to Eternal Treasures; Day718

Col 3:1  If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God.
Col 3:2  Be mindful of things above, not on things on the earth.
Col 3:3  For you died, and your life has been hidden with Christ in God.
Col 3:4  When Christ our Life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.
Col 3:5  Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness (which is idolatry),
Col 3:6  on account of which things’ sake the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience,
Col 3:7  among whom you also once walked, when you lived in these.
Col 3:8  But now also put off all these things: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, shameful speech out of your mouth.
Col 3:9  Do not lie to one another, having put off the old man with his deeds
Col 3:10  and having put on the new, having been renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,
Col 3:11  where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, foreigner, Scythian, slave or freeman, but Christ is all things in all.
Col 3:12  Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender feelings of mercy, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering,
Col 3:13 forbearing one another and forgiving yourselves, if anyone has a complaint against any. As Christ forgave you, so also you do.
Col 3:14  And above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfectness.
Col 3:15  And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which you also are called in one body, and be thankful.
Col 3:16  Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Col 3:17  And everything, whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him.
Col 3:18  Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as is becoming in the Lord.
Col 3:19  Husbands, love your wives, and do not be bitter against them.
Col 3:20  Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord.
Col 3:21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they be discouraged.
Col 3:22  Slaves, obey your masters according to the flesh in all things; not with eye-service, as men-pleasers, but in singleness of heart, fearing God.
Col 3:23  And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men;
Col 3:24  knowing that from the Lord you shall receive the reward of the inheritance. For you serve the Lord Christ.
Col 3:25  But he who does wrong shall receive justice for the wrong which he did, and there is no respect of persons.

Lola Bebang (Britta’s grandmother) died yesterday at the age of 97. This morning, I had a dream that she was lying in bed at our house in Merida with my parents bedroom.  Her bed was placed perpendicular to my parent’s bed by the window. She looks healthy but a little frustrated and was speaking to me in a loud manner but no voice coming out from her mouth. I was trying to understand what she was trying to say and finally I received the message “Keep going and never give up …don’t stop now”.

A few minutes after waking up, had my morning routines and then when I opened my daily devotional, the message today is about mourning.
