Diligence Plus; Day824

In everything I have pointed out to you [by example] that, by working diligently in this manner, we ought to assist the weak, being mindful of the words of the Lord Jesus, how He Himself said, It is more blessed (makes one happier and more to be envied) to give than to receive. Acts 20:35

Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but [only] one receives the prize? So run [your race] that you may lay hold [of the prize] and make it yours. Corinthians 9:24

Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as [something done] for the Lord and not for men,24  Knowing [with all certainty] that it is from the Lord [and not from men] that you will receive the inheritance which is your [real] reward. [The One Whom] you are actually serving [is] the Lord Christ (the Messiah) Colossians 3:23-24

1. Diligence makes us stronger.
2. Diligence allows us to help the weak.
3. Diligence allows us to give more than we receive.
4. Diligence makes us run and finish the race.
5. Diligent work is from the heart, done for God not man.
6. Diligence has a prize at the end.

Do Everything Mightily; Day823; Book-Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol (the place of the dead), where you are going. Ecclesiastes 9:10

And Jesus increased in wisdom (in broad and full understanding) and in stature and years, and in favor with God and man. Luke 2:52

He who is faithful in a very little [thing] is faithful also in much, and he who is dishonest and unjust in a very little [thing] is dishonest and unjust also in much. Luke 16:10

1. Every task in life is given to you, do it with all your might
2. Progression of Wisdom is the result of hard work
3. Start small in Faith and grow from day to day

I’ve finished reading the book Mere Christianity [right click – save as] by C.S. Lewis.  Please find time to read this book.  There were so many new things that I learned from this book.  You will not be disappointed.  I struggled on the first half of the book but then on the second half, ideas became so clear.  At the end, my whole perspective about Christianity has been transformed.

Be Diligent; Day822

He who gathers in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who causes shame. Proverbs 10.5

The appetite of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the appetite of the diligent is abundantly supplied. Proverbs 13:4

He who is loose and slack in his work is brother to him who is a destroyer and he who does not use his endeavors to heal himself is brother to him who commits suicide. Proverbs 18:9

BE DILIGENT
Diligent-Quietly and steadily continuing a task despite any difficulties
Diligence – Conscientiousness in paying proper attention to a task; giving the degree of care required in a given situation; Persevering determination to perform a task; A diligent effort
1. Think ahead through planning
2. Crave to do something
3. Aim to fix problems and not create new ones
4. Start and finish [never give up or stop until the task is finished]

A Christian society is not going to arrive until most of us really want it: and we are not going to want it until we become fully Christian. I may repeat "Do as you would be done by" till I am black in the face, but I cannot really carry it out till I love my neighbor as myself: and I cannot learn to love my neighbor as myself till I learn to love God: and I cannot learn to love God except by learning to obey Him. And so, as I warned you, we are driven on to something more inward —driven on from social matters to religious matters. For the longest way round is the shortest way home. “Mere Christianity” C.S.Lewis

God’s Compassion To Mankind; Day820

For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome. Jeremiah 29:11

It is because of the Lord’s mercy and loving-kindness that we are not consumed, because His [tender] compassions fail not. 23  They are new every morning; great and abundant is Your stability and faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23

For in [this] hope we were saved. But hope [the object of] which is seen is not hope. For how can one hope for what he already sees?25  But if we hope for what is still unseen by us, we wait for it with patience and composure. Romans 8:24-25

KEY POINTS:
“compassion” – a deep awareness of and sympathy for another’s suffering; 2 The humane quality of understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it

1. God’s compassion is for our welfare, peace and not for evil, [design template for every human being]
2. God’s compassion never fails
3. God’s compassion are new every morning
4. God’s compassion is abundant
5. God’s compassion purpose – stability and faithfulness
6. God’s compassion is to give us “unseen” hope

May my prayer like incense rise before You
The lifting of my hands as sacrifice
Oh Lord Jesus turn Your eyes upon me
For I know there is mercy in Your sight
Your statutes are my heritage forever
My heart is set on keeping Your decrees
Please still my anxious urge toward rebellion
Let Love keep my will upon its knees
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
To all creation I can see a limit
But Your commands are boundless and have none
So Your Word is my joy and meditation
From the rising to the setting of the sun
All Your ways are loving and are faithful
The road is narrow but Your burden light
Because You gladly lean to lead the humble
I shall gladly kneel to leave my pride
To all creation I can see a limit
But Your commands are boundless and have none
So Your Word is my joy and meditation
From the rising to the setting of the sun
I will seek You in the morning
I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You’ll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days

Hope is an Action; Day819

But I will hope continually, and will praise You yet more and more..Psalm 71:14
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire is fulfilled, it is a tree of life. Proverbs 13:12
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, does not faint or grow weary; there is no searching of His understanding.29  He gives power to the faint and weary, and to him who has no might He increases strength [causing it to multiply and making it to abound]. Isaiah 40:28-29

KEY POINTS:
1. Hope is continuous and progressive
2. Hope always-no matter what circumstance
3. Hope is a source of power, it keeps us going, increases our strength
4. Hope is an action
5. Hope when there is no hope
6. Hope foundation is the Everlasting God,

-not our job
-not our spouse
-not our children
-not our parents
-not our country
-not our finances
-not our church
-not our leader
-not our co-worker

Regardless…- Rejoice!; Day818

Thank [God] in everything [no matter what the circumstances may be, be thankful and give thanks], for this is the will of God for you [who are] in Christ Jesus [the Revealer and Mediator of that will]. 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Consider it wholly joyful, my brethren, whenever you are enveloped in or encounter trials of any sort or fall into various temptations.3  Be assured and understand that the trial and proving of your faith bring out endurance and steadfastness and patience.4  But let endurance and steadfastness and patience have full play and do a thorough work, so that you may be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing. James 1:2-4

I have no greater joy than this, to hear that my [spiritual] children are living their lives in the Truth. 3 John 1:4

KEY POINTS:
1. Be thankful in everything [good or bad]
2. God’s will for us [where we are and whatever happens]
3. To a complete degree, be joyful in trial and tribulation
4. The proving/testing of our faith produces:
a. Endurance – The power to withstand hardship or stress
b. Steadfastness – Loyalty in the face of trouble and difficulty
c.  Patience – Good-natured tolerance of delay or incompetence
d. Perfection – The state of being without a flaw or defect

Joy Then Triumph; Day817

The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows) John 10:10
Rejoice with those who rejoice [sharing others’ joy], and weep with those who weep [sharing others’ grief]. Romans 12:15
But thanks be to God, Who in Christ always leads us in triumph [as trophies of Christ’s victory] and through us spreads and makes evident the fragrance of the knowledge of God everywhere, 2 Corinthians 2:14
Rejoice in the Lord always [delight, gladden yourselves in Him]; again I say, Rejoice! Philippians 4:4

KEYPOINTS
1. We have a real enemy and his objective is to steal our joy.
2. We have an companion and His objective is to keep/increase our joy and enjoy life
3. We are commanded to be with the same emotion with others.  Not mourn when they are celebrating victory and not celebrating when they are down in the bottomless pit.
4. God leads us in victory. When we are sick in body, facing terminal illness, finances is low, losing our job, unable to find work, rebellion in our family, chaotic relationship, brethren accusing us, confused about life,  loneliness, bitterness, lost – keep your eyes focused to the finish line-we will triumph in the end.
5. Regardless of any negative circumstances – express great joy to God

I was in the neighborhood pool by myself [11am and 90’F] doing my routine 2.4 miles swim training.  This is an 80 minutes non-stop easy to hard pace.  I wish I can just close my eyes and count the number of strokes in every lap and then do it over and over for 80 minutes.  I’ve been doing this weekly routine since 2006 and sometimes its getting boring especially when there is no one in the pool except the clear water and the wind.  The solitude fits my need of being in a conversation mood with God. The swim itself is not hard and in fact it is very easy for me.  What is hard is trying to get to the last lap – the very end of the 2.4mile and I struggled in focusing to finish mentally.  But with all the struggles that I have in my mind, I told myself that I will continue to perform this task regardless of any negative circumstance affecting me – that I will finish to the end.

Swimming has similarities on how we live our life.  We set goals and objectives and there are times that  we face difficulties.  Most of us just give up and try another activity when we are hard pressed.  But there will be a time that giving up is not option and we try to keep going no matter what.  In my swimming struggles, what fuels me is joy.  The joy of being able just to float freely in the water and swim across the pool back and forth until I reached my desired distance.  It’s not the victory at the end why I do what I do in my life, it is the joy of doing it that lead me to victory everyday.  If the trophy at the finish line is what we are after, then what happens next after you win it all.  There are many examples we can draw from the top athletes in the world, if winning is the ultimate goal, then reaching it ends the joy.  The joy is in the “doing part”, it’s in the journey, it’s in the struggle – reaching the goal or objective in life is irrelevant.

Journey to Gladness; Day816; Day001

They who sow in tears shall reap in joy and singing. Psalm126:5
A glad heart makes a cheerful countenance, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken. Proverbs 15:13
Your words were found, and I ate them; and Your words were to me a joy and the rejoicing of my heart, for I am called by Your name, O Lord God of hosts. Jeremiah 15:16
Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are enrolled in heaven. Luke 10:20

KEYPOINTS:
1. Gladness progression is from tears to joy; heartbroken to being whole
2. Gladness starts from the inside. When the Holy Spirit touches/speaks to you in a special way
3. Gladness is found in His Words-the heart rejoices when we consume His Words
4. Gladness motivation-our membership in Heaven is counted. [no other reasons]
5. Gladness source-Christ Himself and no other

“God made us: invented us as a man invents an engine. A car is made to run on gasoline, and it would not run properly on anything else. Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other. That is why it is just no good asking God to make us happy in our own way without bothering about religion. God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing.”  Mere Christianity p.30  C..S. Lewis

Regarding keypoint #2, I had been shown in my heart by the Holy Spirit and He is trying to communicate with me through strange circumstances lately.  The other day during my 1-mile swim, I normally just execute my swimming training thinking and praying to God and sometimes brainstorming about work problems.  I had 30 minutes to do it since I have to pickup my son from his tennis practice.  I had my stopwatch running and I normally ends at :35 minutes, this time I stopped at :30.  When I went to my backpack and get my phone to check if Brent had called, the phone rings and my wife told me that Brent is ready to be picked up.  I did not pay attention to it but then in a few minutes the Holy Spirit explained to me that there is an “appointed time” that He set and if I pay attention closely, I can recognize it.  My day went on and forgot the whole experience.  On Monday the next day, I did my normal 40mile cycling route but added an extra 2 miles just to climb an extra hill for training purposes.  When I got home, I reached out for my phone from my back pocket and as I began to turn off the MapMyRide app, the phone rings again at the precise moment-the end of my workout-it was my daughter who was just asking a few questions regarding a water filter at her apartment in San Antonio.  This time, I did not even argue/self doubt and I know what he meant by “appointed time” – He is showing me something.

I’m switching to my own daily devotional using the youversion application. For some reason, I wake up this morning with this idea – “find your own revelation”.  As I follow my intuition, I was surprised of how everything is already laid out for me at youversion.  Check it out when you get a chance.  Consider this message as your “appointed time” revelation.

Notes on Temptation; Day814; The Cross

For no temptation (no trial regarded as enticing to sin), [no matter how it comes or where it leads] has overtaken you and laid hold on you that is not common to man [that is, no temptation or trial has come to you that is beyond human resistance and that is not adjusted and adapted and belonging to human experience, and such as man can bear]. But God is faithful [to His Word and to His compassionate nature], and He [can be trusted] not to let you be tempted and tried and assayed beyond your ability and strength of resistance and power to endure, but with the temptation He will [always] also provide the way out (the means of escape to a landing place), that you may be capable and strong and powerful to bear up under it patiently. 1 Corinthians 10.13  […read more] [full chapter]

KEY POINTS:
1. Temptation-Something that seduces or has the quality to seduce; The desire to have or do something that you know you should avoid; The act of influencing by exciting hope or desire; Qualities that attract by seeming to promise some kind of reward
2. Synonyms-enticement, lure
3. Temptation has no ground in us [believers] ; we have the ability to resist. Just say no and that is the end of it or walk away
4. We are tempted but God always gave us a way out; when the exit door is shown, make sure you leave
5. There’s a ratio of how much temptation is allowed to us [according to our ability and strength]
6. There is always a way out when you are tempted
7. If you think the temptation is unbearable, be patient.
8. Wait patiently!
9. Temptation will always be there, but it is up to us if we yield to it.
examples:
-small voice telling you that you are worthless and you need to jump off a bridge or quit [you are designed to succeed]
-small voice telling you that you don’t have the ability to be the best-[you are the best!]
-small voice telling you that it’s ok not to go to church [there is a new movement of the Holy Spirit, seek it]
-urge to read information that is not relevant to you [if the information does not improve you, don’t consume it]
-mindless internet surfing [there is more to fb, chat, social networking – read a good book, articles, blogs that encourages you or energizes your passion]
-urge to shop mindlessly/without reason or purpose [always have a purpose when you do something, don’t just do things because you are bored and what to get some air]
– friend inviting you to a party where drinking is the central part [stay at home, that is the safest place for a stable person-you will never regret it]
-watching mindless tv instead of listening to Christian music and reading a book [tv has other good purposes, find it]
-feeling of keeping it to yourself when you have something good to say/write [if it will make the world better, if it encourages someone or if it can influence to a great workplace-share it]
-having a mindset that you have plenty of time to change later [change now!  you don’t really have much time and what if tomorrow does not come]

I am desperate for Your touch
a glimpse of heaven
for the glory of Your Son.
In a moment You can
turn a life around
forever to be found in You.

I am reaching out to find
there’s nothing greater than
Your love that holds my life.
Your grace and mercy that
have saved me by Your blood,
and swept away my shame Oh Lord.

Chorus
Your love is like fire
that burns for all to see.
My only desire
to worship at Your feet.
So let this fire
consume my life.
Let Your love take me deeper
pull me closer to where You are,
’cause all I want is more of You.

and I’ll surrender to Your love
forever humbled by the
message of the cross.
I stand abandoned in
Your presence and Your grace,
and I’ll never be the same Oh God.

Chorus
Your love is like fire,
that burns for all to see.
My only desire,
to worship at Your feet.
So let this fire
consume my life.
Let Your love take me deeper,
pull me closer to where You are,
’cause all I want is more of You.

When You call I will follow.
At the cross I surrender all,
Jesus I belong to You.

I belong to You Lord

Your love is like fire,
that burns for all to see.
My only desire,
to worship at Your feet.

Your love is like fire,
that burns for all to see.
My only desire,
to worship at Your feet.

So let this fire

Personal Revelation of God; Day812; The Day After

For ever since the creation of the world His invisible nature and attributes, that is, His eternal power and divinity, have been made intelligible and clearly discernible in and through the things that have been made (His handiworks). So [men] are without excuse [altogether without any defense or justification]  […read more] [full chapter]

THE DAY AFTER
Something happened last night after the Hillsong concert.  I know that I have not come to the fullness of Christ yet in my years of spending time with Him daily. It seems like the Holy Spirit is turning my faith to the next phase.  I don’t know what it is but I feel something is stirring up inside my heart and mind and I am excited and overjoyed.  Whatever it is, I will be glad to wait for what is to come.

HILLSONG CONCERT-CEDAR PARK CENTER
There is only one word that I can describe of todays event – AWESOME and I’m not going to describe further more.  When you get a chance to be in one of Hillsong’s concert, don’t miss it.  Actually it is not a concert, it is a full blown non-stop worship for >2hours and the worst thing about the whole event was – it has to come to an end.   I did not know what type of ticket I purchased and when I arrived at the stadium, the usher told me to go to the pit.  A short feel around of the place, I realized that the pit is the space close to the stage and there were no chairs to sit down-it is standing only.  So I figure, this is going to be a great worship night – no sitting down.  I was not disappointed.  It was a lifetime experience.  The crowd at the pit are the loudest and the more expressive in worship.  It was like being at the front row of a large church.  I was glad I was in the pit.

To Brittney and Brent, please attend one of this event in the future.

Mindset-Nonprofit; Day806

For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his life [in the eternal kingdom of God]? For what can a man give as an exchange (a compensation, a ransom, in return) for his [blessed] life [in the eternal kingdom of God]? For whoever is ashamed [here and now] of Me and My words in this adulterous (unfaithful) and [preeminently] sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when He comes in the glory (splendor and majesty) of His Father with the holy angels. Dream: Nick and Ging-ging
Ging-ging T. and Nick P. were married. Ging-ging informed me that Nick stopped coming home to Ormoc because he has a mistress in Manila.  Ging-ging felt bad that he abandoned his family and was really sad.  I talked to Nick and he did not deny.  He just told me “I am already a retired person and have nothing else to do”.

In real life, Ging-ging and Nick are cousins.  I met Ging-ging 20 years ago and we became a distant friend after I moved to the US.  I met Nick here in Texas in November 2010 when he visited Texas.

14-Hour Family Ordeal
My daughter is attending college [year#2] at UTSA, University of Texas at San Antonio. San Antonio is 90 miles south from where we are.  She lives with 3 other new roommates at Hill Country Place near UTSA.  She drives a black 2009 Colorado Pickup truck and her apartment is self sustaining [first aid kit, supplies, tools etc.] and she is also highly trained by me.   There was a reason why I created a Go-Kit backpack for light travel and I never expected that the day will come that I will have to use it.  Well, today, my daughter called from her apartment crying and in pain.  I had to make a few critical decision on the fly including deciding to call 911 and letting her go to the emergency room by herself.  As a parent who has no control of the situation, you learn how to use pure wisdom and hoping that whatever you do or say will not complicate things.  Ninety minutes on the road seems like a long time for us who were eager to know if our daughter is safe or not.  Fast forward 14 hours and the ordeal was over.  This is my account on what transpired today 20120910, a day after my 46th Birthday.

Many thanks to Claudia [Brittney’s roommate]

1232, Received a call from my daughter in San Antonio [90miles away from Round Rock], she is in great pain [pt=8, pain threshold] and cannot move. The event happened while she was in the shower. Able to get dressed but unable to move or walk back to bed due to sharp pain in her lower back.
1235, Asked the following questions and her responses: [Brent beside me, Britta was at work]
1. Can you wiggle your right toe? Yes
2. Can you wiggle your left toe? Yes
3. Can you touch your feet and feel sensation? Yes
4. Chest pain check? No chest pain.
5. Breathing check? Breathing fine.
6. Can you raise your right hand? Yes
7. Can you raise your left hand? Yes
8. Can you take one more step? No, pain threshold=8 very unbearable

1237, Fired up WebMD and looked for symptoms “sudden lower back pain”
Result: http://www.webmd.com/back-pain/guide/understanding-back-pain-symptoms

Symptoms of lower back pain:
1. Persistent aching or stiffness anywhere along your spine, from the base of the neck to the tail bone
2. Sharp, localized pain in the neck, upper back, or lower back — especially after lifting heavy objects or engaging in other strenuous activity. (Pain in the upper back can also be a sign of a heart attack or other life-threatening conditions.)
3. Chronic ache in the middle or lower back, especially after sitting or standing for extended periods
4. Back pain that radiates from the low back to the buttock, down the back of the thigh, and into the calf and toes
5. Inability to stand straight without having severe muscle spasms in the low back

Call your doctor  about back pain if
1. You feel numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arms or legs. This may signal damage to the spinal cord.
2. The pain in your back extends downward along the back of the leg. You may be suffering from sciatica.
3. The pain increases when you cough or bend forward at the waist. This can be the sign of a herniated disc.
4. The pain is accompanied by fever, burning during urination, or strong-smelling urine. You may have an infection.
5. You begin to have problems with your bowels or bladder.

Other "red flags" that could point to a serious problem include:
1. A history of cancer.
2. You have been losing weight without trying.
3. You have been on steroids or medication that weakens your immune system.
4. A history of trauma.
5. Pain that is getting worse and does not get better after you rest.
6. A history of IV drug use.

1240, Told her to call 911. I did not want to gamble her health by my “Army combat lifesaver training”  Although she had all the mobility of her toes and fingers and was talking to me on the phone, I had no medical experience to diagnose her and to tell her to sleep on it with anti inflammatory. [I would if it was me]
1246, EMS arrived. Brittney called and asked for final confirmation of ambulance transportation to ER.  EMS declared her non-critical.  Told her to continue transportation to ER
1250, Prepared my Go Kit backpack for light travel and waiting for “Mother Hen” [Britta] , she was working and she wants to come with me.
0100, Talked to EMS tech. Was told formally that daughter is not critical. En route to Methodist Hospital in San Antonio
0110, Britta arrived from work. Packing
0115, Left Round Rock home [Brent staying behind by himself]
0300, En route to San Antonio, Britta talked to Brittney and ER diagnosed her with Lumbar Strain and dismissed her.
0330, Arrived at Methodist Hospital. Brittney waiting at lobby still in pain but was dismissed.  She received a few dose of Motrin and release paper with prescription.
0335, Brittney still in pain and can hardly get inside the front seat.
0345, Drop by at Whataburger.  Hungry! and in Pain!
0400, Back to Brittney’s apartment at Hill Country Place.  Eat then she slept.
0500, Sleep
0600, Sleep
0700-1000, Organize paper works. Planning to leave her at 1400.  Britta has to go back to work tonight.

1100, Nap
1200, Slightly mobile but pain remains at 5
1300, Gave final instructions-“Survive on your own”. Use Motrin 800 and muscle relaxant.  Asked mental questions: ie anxiety and thoughts.
1. She’s worried about missing school.
2. She feels bad that we have to be bothered.
3. She’s worried about the medical expenses.

I told her that a parent will do anything for their children and assured her that this event does not inconvenience us.  This is our job and we are there for her.

1400, Left UTSA for Round Rock
1430, En route to Round Rock halfway, Britta’s Run Flat Indicator was alarming.  Stopped by the gas station and air up all 4 tires. Right rear was –4psi lower but not flat.  I remembered that I don’t have a functioning spare tire.  Took a gamble and drove Toll 130 at 80 mph for 30 minutes to reach Round Rock on time.
1545, Arrived safely.
1600, Drop off Britta so that she can go to sleep.  I drove to Round Rock Outlet to pickup Brent’s clinical uniform.  Also, contacted Mercedes Part/Service, they ordered the missing 4 lug nuts for spare.
1700, Back at home. Waiting for Brent. Unpack
1800, Pickup Brent. Britta left for work
1900, Called Brittney, I was surprised!  She was at Culvers eating ice cream.
2000, Cook for Brent [actually, just reheating some left over pork with cooking oil, scored 10 on the taste]
2100, Writing this journal and listening to Spotify Freedom Is Here by Hillsong United in repeat mode.

Freedom Is Here
By Hillsong

The future comes alive
You speak Your word and I
I’m running into Your hope
Because I’ve seen Your light
You bring my world to life
I’m coming after You love

I’m not shaken
I’m not letting go
And everything comes alive
In my life as we lift You higher
Let Your freedom arise
In our lives as we lift You up
Sing it out
Sing it out
Your freedom is here

So take the limits off
No matter what the cost
I’m running after Your call
And I will run this race
See You face to face
So let Your power overflow

I will not fear
I will not hide You love
You love
All of my life
I cannot deny Your love
Your love

Website: http://www.mind.org.uk/

As part of of my “Full Listening” project, I need to understand how a normal human being turns into something else.  I’m not interested in the cure and the method of diagnosis [this is not my field] but I’m interested about what the psychological community is saying.  These articles here gave me a few answers.

Simple Information Delivery-Google Reader

The Blind Caveman is getting lazy and found a better way to “pull information” from the web.

I have 3 devices at home that I normally use:
1. My HTC Phone

3. My Samsung Windows RT Tablet
and I am fetching all internet information in one site http://www.google.com/reader/

Uses:
1. Skim internet headlines, I don’t need to read all the details
2. Share relevant articles to friends through
3. I can mark the article as “starred” for future reference or when I don’t have time to read it yet.

Requirements:
1. Gmail account
2. Subscription to RSS feed.  I normally just search for keywords after clicking the red button “Subscribe”
3. Google Reader App for android phones.
4. Readiculous App for Windows RT Tablet

Book Summary: Power Listening

I have to write this book summary for a course credit so I might as well share this to the world.
Are you a bad listener?  Check to see if you are not a member of this group.

Date: September 2012 Name: Rigel G. Arcayan
Title/ Author/ ISBN; Power Listening
By Bernard T. Ferrari
ISBN: 978-159184462
208 pages
Introduction: A well prepared book on the subject of listening. The author starts the book with the importance of listening and how it can be used to make good judgment. Listening is a skill and just like any other skills, it must be learned and applied daily to become a part of our automatic response to any situation. There is power to listening and when we catch on to the immense potential of what it can do to a team or a corporation, we become addicted to listening well to our conversation partner. The author first establishes the 6 archetypes of a bad listener and discussed each one with clarity. After knowing/exposing the 6 archetypes of a bad listener, immediately you will latch on to the notion “not to be one”. The book is not just for CEO or managers as implied mostly in the book by mentioning examples of meetings of high level leaders in a big corporation. If you are a human being and you interact with people or a team; or if you are a parent who has children to manage daily; or a husband or a wife – this book is for you to digest.
What is the book about? Chapters:

1. Listening Is Worth the Effort
2. What Kind of Listener Are You?
3. Respect Your Conversation Partner
4. How to Keep Quite-Most of the Time
5. Challenge All Assumptions
6. Keeping Your Focus
7. What is the Mandate?
8. What is the Plan?
9. What is the Team?
10. How Will We Get it Done?
11. Is It getting Personal?
12. Connecting Better Listening to Better Judgment
13. Changing Your Organization through Listening
Conclusion: What to do on Monday Morning
Notes and Highlights:
Listening Actively:

Take nothing that you hear for granted, and try to sustain respect for the ideas of each of your colleagues.

Keep quiet! You have to get out of the way of the conversation in order to hear what’s important.

The Filing System:

1. Get to the mandate. Sometimes simply getting clarity on the specific dream, aspiration, or organizational mission underlying the discussion can make all the difference.

2. Understand the plan. How are we going to get from A to B? We have to understand each individual step if we want to be able to navigate toward a successful outcome.

3. Know who is on the team. Is this discussion about people and how they will work together?

4. Be aware of how well you are executing. Build your understanding around the risks and rewards, measurements, and accountability that will drive effective execution of the plan.

5. Be mindful of the personal. People are not automatons. Character and personality traits can impact what information is being offered.

Active Listening:
1. Listening is purposeful. A disciplined businessperson enters a conversation with a clear understanding of what it needs to accomplish.
2. Listening requires control. Even when you’re on the receiving end of a communication, you need to steer and filter the incoming information in order to accomplish your purpose.
3. Listening requires total focus and engagement. When you listen with intent, you must bring a heightened awareness to the conversation, so that you can formulate the right questions and generate the necessary interjections and interruptions (a subject I’ll talk about in more depth later) to advance the conversation productively.
4. Listening is the front end of decision making. It’s the surest,

What Kind Of Listener Are You?
6 Types of Bad Listeners

#1. The Opinionator
The Opinionator listens to others primarily to determine whether or not their ideas conform to what he or she already believes to be true. Opinionators may appear to be listening closely, but they aren’t listening with an open mind and instead often use their silences as opportunities to “reload.” While Opinionators may have good intentions, the effect of this listening style is to make conversation partners uncomfortable or even to intimidate them. Opinionators routinely squelch their colleagues’ ideas.

#2. The Grouch
The Grouches are poor listeners who are blocked by a feeling of certainty that your idea is wrong. One typical grouch, a top executive I worked with at an industrial company, made no secret of his contempt for other people’s ideas. He approached conversations as a necessary evil and sent the implicit message: “You’re full of it. You’re a fool. Why did you think I’d be interested in this?” Through perseverance, people could get through to him in conversations, painful though that was. However, many of his colleagues simply didn’t have the energy to break down his barriers every time they needed to express an idea to him.

#3. The Preambler
The Preambler’s windy lead-ins and questions are really stealth speeches, often intended to box conversation partners into a corner. Preamblers use questioning to steer the discussion, send warnings, or generate a desired answer. I remember a meeting with one Preambler, the chairman and CEO of a medical complex, who (by my watch) spent 15 minutes posing slanted questions
and making rhetorical assertions that all supported a recommendation he wanted to make to his board. Such behavior epitomizes one-way communication.

#4. The Perservator
Perseverators talk a lot without saying anything. If you pay close attention to one of these poor listeners, you’ll find that their comments and questions don’t advance the conversation. As often as not, Perseverators are editing on the fly and fine-tuning their thoughts through reiteration. Perseverators use the thoughts of their conversation partners to support their own prejudices, biases, or ideas. When talking to one, you may feel that the two of you are having completely different conversations.

#5. The Answer Man
Everyone wants to solve problems, but Answer Man spouts solutions before there is even a consensus about the challenge—a clear signal that input from conversation partners isn’t needed. Answer Man may appear at first to be an Opinionator. But the latter is motivated by strong feelings of being right, while the former is desperately eager to please and impress. You know you are speaking to Answer Man if your conversation partner can’t stop providing solutions and has ready answers for any flaws you point out, as well as quick rejoinders to all the points you raise.

#6. The Pretender
Pretenders feign engagement and even agreement but either aren’t interested in what you’re saying or have already made up their minds. The worst Pretender I ever met was the CEO of a health care company who had all the right moves: he seemed to hang on every word uttered, for example, and frequently won people over with a knowing, empathetic smile. That gave his conversation partners every indication that he was processing their words and agreeing with them. Yet eventually his colleagues would realize that he had not acted on anything they’d said or, worse, didn’t have access to that information when it came time to make decisions or take action.

How To Improve Your Listening Skills
1. Show Respect-respect your conversation partner no matter what
2. Keep Quiet-use 80/20 rule.  80% listening, 20% talking
3. Challenge Assumptions-seek to understand and challenge what they say-the assumptions

5 Questions To Ask Before Interrupting
1. Do I need any clarification?
2. Do I want to hear more about this issue, or one that has come before?
3. Do I need to parse an issue to focus on a certain aspect?
4. Do I want to head down a different line of discussion?
5. Is there a counterargument or new perspective

6. Do I need to end the conversation?

Keep Focus:
1. Compartmentalizing-Managing external stimuli
2. Decoupling-process of separating your emotions from the substance of the conversation
2. Get to the POINT and don’t repeat

Sorting the Chaos
1. Identify what a conversation is all about
2. Capture the information that matters from any conversation or meeting
3. Steer a conversation in order to ensure that you gather all that information
4. Know how to sort and process the information received
5. File away the information so you can remember, recall, and use it when necessary

File Drawers
1. Mandate
2. Plan
3. Team
4. Execution
5. Personal

A. What is the Mandate?
1. Why are we here?

2. Are there any misalignments?
3. Can we work with this mandate?

4. Does the mandate capture the imagination and energy of the leadership team?
5. Can the mandate be communicated more broadly to all the stakeholders?
6. Can the mandate be translated into a plan?

B. What is the Plan?
1. What are you going to do now?
2. What are the specific objectives that begin to move a company toward its mandate?
3. What are the specific initiatives that will help achieve the objectives?
4. What is the timeline?
5. What assets are required, and are they available?
6. What are the risks we will be facing?

C. What is the Team?
1. What capabilities do we need?
2. What are the mind-sets of the team members?
3. What are roles of the team members?
4. Will this assignment be goo for the individual on the team
5. What are the inescapable realities?
6. How is the chemistry?
7. What are the consequences of the performance?

D. How will we get it done?
1. How are we making decision?
2. Are we getting the right information at the right time?
3. How do we manage complexity?
4. Do we have a rhythm?

E. Is it getting personal?
1. What does this person value?
2. What are the individual’s aspirations?
3. How does this person interact with colleagues and others?
4. What is the person’s level of self-awareness?
Change your organization through Listening
1. Foster a more disciplined and productive organization.
2. Ensure the free and open flow of information and ideas.
3. Establish a reverence for fact-based discussions.
4. Generate new insights and more creative solutions.
5. Build an organization that excites and energizes its people.

What to do on Monday Morning?
1. Keep quiet.
2. Challenge assumptions.
3. Focus on what you need to know.
4. Increase your tolerance for ambiguity and uncertainty.
5. Sort incoming information into the appropriate file drawers and folders.
6. Work your memory to gain insights.
7. Know when to pull the trigger.
8. Demonstrate the best listening practices to lift everyone’s game.

What do you think about the book? The book is well written. I like what he wrote in his acknowledgement section that he will try to present the subject matter with the” applicability” in mind and to deliver the message with less prose. The author did exactly what he said will do-deliver the message with clarity and brevity. I hope all authors are like him-to the point and no extra run around the corner theory and examples. This is not a defined HOWTO book on listening. You have to think and digest on every point he is explaining and then apply it slowly to real life experiences. One morning after reading the first few chapters the night before, I was in a meeting with my small team at work and I noticed immediately the archetypes. I’m normally a very quiet/silent person by choice long before I’ve read this book but I did not know how to listen well. Knowing now the key concepts of Power Listening, it made me a better listener.

The idea of Power Listening mentioned in this book is focused on people. But as I was reading the book and now I’m writing a summary, it occurred to me that the application of Power Listening is not just limited to the realm of being in a conversation with someone or being in a group of people in a meeting or an interaction between a leader and a subordinate or a relationship between a husband and wife or the leadership between a parent and child. I saw more.

Think of a problem at work or home, if you apply the concepts of Power Listening and avoid the 6 archetypes of a bad listener, you can make way of a better judgment on what to do next. Don’t jump to conclusion when you see a slight victory, let the situation mellow down by listening to the data and outcome. Listen to the data available before taking any action to any situation.

Conclusion: If you don’t have time to read this book, immerse on this idea when you are in a conversation with somebody:
“Take nothing that you hear for granted, and try to sustain respect for the ideas of each of your colleagues. The next step may seem obvious: Keep quiet! You have to get out of the way of the conversation in order to hear what’s important”.p5

Recommendations:
1. Read this book.
2. Use the Kindle version if you have a tablet. I’ve read this book mostly before going to sleep and waking up.
3. Read one chapter at a time and then apply at work, co-worker or at home. I used my wife and son as the guinea pig. One time, my wife confided me about a bad situation at her workplace. She was feeling bad about the situation and here she is telling me everything and I had no idea where the subject was going. Instead of cutting her off and telling her that I’m not interested about her workplace negative reports, I told her to go on and I listened well. In the end, I noticed that all she wanted was to release the tension inside her head. For me, I learned that sometimes a person just needs somebody to listen – you don’t really have to do anything else.

4. Be Quite.  Give it a try! You’ll be amazed how much you hear around you. [not just inner voices of people, but data, insights and wisdom]

Holy Is Our King

I played this song in repeat mode in my Spotify app on my phone while doing my 40mile bike ride today.  When I left the house, I clicked the “play” button and listened to this song over and over for almost 3 hours.  When I got back to the house right at the front door, the music ended at the very last note where I started and my mileage was right at 40.09 miles.

Then an impression in my heart told me “Just so you know, I’m with you and I received your worship”.

I was so tired and dying and my only wish was “just get me home”, temperature was close to 95’F.

Little things like this one elevates my faith one more notch.

I had a deep “2-minute” conversation with my wife yesterday before she left for work as part of my “power listening’ exercise and asked her what she feared most.  She replied – death.  Then she went on and explained to me that not necessarily her own death but the death of her parents is the most dreadful thing that currently bothered her.  My wife sometimes wakes up in the middle of her sleep in “panic mode” because she’s having a bad dream regarding her parents.  I listened to her attentively as she told me how these things bothered her a lot.  I paused  for a minute and then explained to her that death is not the end of life but the beginning of life.  There is a better place  waiting for us after our tenure here on earth.  There is hope after life.  We are not going away.  We are going to place that is prepared for us.  Death is not the end but the beginning of life.

FIX: Minecraft Connection Timeout

PROBLEM: Minecraft Game connection timeout error during the start of the game [Hunger Games]
FIX: Replaced the Belkin router with Linksys WRT54G with DD-WRT v24-sp2

Tools:
Linksys WRT54G v4
DD-WRT v24-sp2 firmware
TCPView
WRT54G Mod Downgrade

Summary:
Two days ago, my son celebrated his 16th birthday. I asked him what he want for his birthday and he replied, “I want a new computer to play the Minecraft Hunger Games”.  In my house, there are at least 8 computer/servers running. My answer was “No, I will not add another client pc in the house”.  We have enough computing power in the house to run a small business.  Two days passed and I have not given a birthday gift to this guy and I wanted to make an impact [emotional deposit].  I asked him why do you need a new computer?  He told me that Minecraft will not even start on his x64 desktop with Windows7.

My son is in Junior High and ranks  #5ish in the class.  He is very smart and sometimes I imagined if only he has my organizational skills and habits, I think this guy can easily get to the top.  I really don’t want him to be immersed on Quadrant4 items [small rocks in life [ie-video games]. But as a learned/smart parent, it is not my place to impose on my kids of what I want for him.  My leadership  style is empowerment and freestyle.  I want my kids to be autonomous in their lives.  I want them to be self sufficient and able to make smart decision on the fly.  I’ve been teaching them how to live a life without me and I think they already have attained that.

Lately, I’ve been reading a book called “Power Listening” and currently in Chapter 4.  What I learned from this book in the early chapter is to listen well to others.  My son was determined to get what he want on his birthday and there is no backing down.  At the current chapter of this book, this situation with my son becomes the litmus test of life application. He really  wanted to play Minecraft and I was not listening and this bothered me a lot.  What he’s been doing lately was just watching YouTube a replayed version of the game.  Being a model father and plenty of spare time to waste, I asked him, “Show me what is Minecraft and why it will not work on any of the desktop and laptop in the house”.

And so, he fired up my Dell Latitude E6400 notebook and proved to me that it failed to run.  He then took my wife’s Dell Latitude E4200 and tried to play and that too failed.  The graphics is so sluggish and it cannot even start a multiplayer game on the network.

Hmmm ….and that’s when the challenge started and it took us 5 hours to find a true fix. Here’s my journey with my son in trying to fix the Minecraft Connection Timeout error. Yes, Minecraft will run on Dell Latidue notebooks E6400 and E4200 and youdon’t really need to buy the latest and the greatest hardware to play Minecraft.

Step By Step:
1. Updated Java to x64 version, no fix
2. Run Minecraft on Dell Latitude E6400, no fix
3. Run Minecraft on Dell Latitude E4200 with SSD drive, no fix
4. Set video settings as listed below, now able to play “Single Player”
image
5. Use a faster WIFI Access point, Multiplayer Connection Timeout
6. Use a wired LAN connection, Multiplayer Connection Timeout
7. Add pc to DMZ, Multiplayer Connection Timeout
8. Turned off Windows Firewall Inbound settings, Multiplayer Connection Timeout
9. Launched TCPView and observed the failure mechanism.  Noticed that the failure happened at the start of the multiplayer game.
10. Repeated Step9 for 3x to test the theory that it is a LAN bandwidth issue, able to repeat,  Multiplayer Connection Timeout
11. Opened Belkin Firwall Log, noticed that the logs were littered with several “Blocked/RST by DoS protection” [this is the hint]
12. Installed a Linksys Router instead of Belkin, the problem disappeared [case closed].

Conclusion:
The Belkin router F6D4230-4 v1 had a feature called DoS protection which I have no idea on how to turn off at this time. When people started connecting to the Minecraft server, the router inbound connection jumps, this jump of many inbound connections is interpreted by the Belkin software as denial of service attack [DoS], therefore, cuts off the connection for safety. The problem went away on the Linksys WRT54G because of the firmware that I have on it [DD-WRT]. Those so called Denial of Service threats were not treated strictly on the configuration that I have setup in DD-WRT.

Word in the Heart; Day779

Let the word [spoken by] Christ (the Messiah) have its home [in your hearts and minds] and dwell in you in [all its] richness, as you teach and admonish and train one another in all insight and intelligence and wisdom [in spiritual things, and as you sing] psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, making melody to God with [His] grace in your hearts. Colossians 3:16 […read more]

The Word-the Bible resides in our heart and mind
The Purpose-to teach, admonish and train one another through Praise and Worship

Barnes on Col 3:16 –
Let the word of Christ – The doctrine of Christ.

Dwell in you richly in all wisdom
– Abundantly, producing the spirit of true wisdom. That doctrine is adapted to make you wise. The meaning is, that they were to lay up the doctrines of the gospel in their hearts, to meditate upon them; to allow them to be their guide, and to endearor wisely to improve them to the best purpose.

Teaching and admonishing … –
See this explained in the notes at Eph_5:19-20. The only additional thought here is, that their psalms and hymns were to be regarded as a method of “teaching” and “admonishing;” that is, they were to be imbued with truth, and to be such as to elevate the mind, and withdraw it from error and sin. Dr. Johnson once said, that if he were allowed to make the ballads of a nation, he cared not who made the laws. It is true in a more important sense that he who is permitted to make the hymns of a church, need care little who preaches, or who makes the creed. He will more effectually mould the sentiments of a church than they who preach or make creeds and confessions. Hence, it is indispensable, in order to the preservation of the truth, that the sacred songs of a church should be imbued with sound evangelical sentiment.

Introvert or Extrovert?

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, ISBN: 0670916765

http://www.thepowerofintroverts.com/quiet-quiz-are-you-an-introvert/

1. I prefer one-on-one conversations to group activities.
2. I often prefer to express myself in writing.
3. I enjoy solitude.
4. I seem to care about wealth, fame, and status less than my peers.
5. People tell me that I’m a good listener.
6. I’m not a big risk-taker.
7. I enjoy work that allows me to "dive in" with few interruptions.
8. I like to celebrate birthdays on a small scale, with only one or two close friends or family members.
9. People describe me as "soft-spoken" or "mellow."
10. I prefer not to show or discuss my work with others until it’s finished.
11. I tend to think before I speak.
12. I often let calls go through to voice-mail.

Your personality profile: I. (I = Introvert. E = Extrovert)

I = Introvert. If you answered the majority of the questions true, you’re probably an introvert. Given the choice, you’ll devote your social energy to the people you care about most, preferring a glass of wine with a close friend to a party full of strangers. You think before you speak, and relish solitude. You feel energized when focusing deeply on a subject or activity that really interests you. You have an active inner life, and are at your best when you tap into its riches.

E/I = Ambivert. If you answered the questions evenly, true and false, you’re probably an ambivert – meaning that you fall smack in the middle of the introvert-extrovert spectrum. In many ways, ambiverts have the best of both worlds, able to tap into either pole as needed.

E = Extrovert. If you answered the majority of the questions false, you’re probably an extrovert. You relish social life, and are energized by interacting with friends and strangers alike. You are assertive, go-getting, and able to seize the day. You’re great at thinking on your feet, and are relatively comfortable with conflict. You are actively engaged in the world around you, and are at your best when you tap into its energy.

Why does it matter where you fall on the introvert-extrovert spectrum? Because introversion and extroversion are at the heart of human nature. And when you make life choices that are congruent with your temperament, you unleash vast stores of energy.

Conversely, when you spend too much time battling your own nature, the opposite happens—you deplete yourself. Too many people live lives that don’t suit them—introverts with frenetic social schedules, extroverts with jobs that require them to sit in front of their computers for hours at a stretch. We all have to do things that don’t come naturally—some of the time. But it shouldn’t be all the time. It shouldn’t even be most of the time.

(Remember, though, that no one is all introvert or all extrovert. Introverts attend wild parties, and extroverts curl up with their favorite books. As the psychologist Carl Jung put it, "There is no such thing as a pure extrovert or a pure introvert. Such a man would be in the lunatic asylum.")

When Panic Attacks; Day777; Brent 16

Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father keeps feeding them. Are you not worth much more than they?  Matthew 6:26 […read more]

I have to educate myself regarding the subject “Panic Attacks”.  I have a few friends who come to my inner circle once in a while and we discuss some of their problems [friendly counseling only, not professional].  They explained to me that when the panic attack episode happens, it’s like the end of the world to them.  Symptoms are rapid heart rate, can’t breath, blurry vision, confused,  unable to think clearly, feel like dying, helpless, knees are weak and unable to stand.  I was puzzled by this panic attack subject for weeks.  I have no idea that this thing existed and I never heard of it before.  So, I did my research and started reading a few articles. I end up collecting quite a few materials.  I’ve read the following books/articles:  "Transforming the Mind", "Prisoner of Our Thoughts"“US Army Manual” , Medscape , eMedicine and then a book by Dr. David Burns “When Panic Attacks” .  I gained a lot of knowledge about the subject after a few months of research but at the end of all my efforts of learning on how to deal with somebody whose mind is not stable, I still came up empty handed.  I talked to them, gave them my advice, told them to seek professional help, get some counseling from an expert.   They listened but then in a few months, I’ll hear them again telling me the same old stories – the panic attack is still there.

One day in my daily prayer, I asked God, “What is your solution to Panic Attacks?  I waited for days for the answer until one day, in a still small voice He replied – “My Word is enough!  You don’t have to read all that” and I was led to Matthew 6 .   I studied the whole chapter  that day and surely all the answers were there.  All the components of how to live a healthy and sound life are mentioned in the chapter.

I don’t want to breakdown the message for you on Matthew 6.  I want you to see it for yourself.  Grab a pen and piece of paper and start writing down the key points.

Be blessed!
ra

P.S. I don’t want to discredit the medical community for trying to fix this type of disorder. Panic Disorder is a fully identified illness, heavily researched and it is real. Those materials mentioned here are good source of knowledge and sometimes are effective. They have their places in the therapy and I love knowing the science of it.  Feel free to skim some of my notes here.  They are interesting.

Make a Joyful Noise!

MAKE A joyful noise to the Lord, all you lands! Psalm 100:1

Albert Barnes in his time of studying the Bible wrote this commentary regarding the “Joyful Noise” in Psalm 100:1.  He had no idea that it will become a worldwide movement of Praise and Worship like this one. He wrote in his notes  “It may thus be used to denote any shout of joy or praise. In public worship it would denote praise of the most animated kind”

Barnes on Psalm 100:1
Make a joyful noise unto the Lord – See the notes at Psalm 95:1.

All ye lands – Margin, as in Hebrew, “all the earth.” The margin expresses the sense. The idea in the psalm is, that praise did not pertain to one nation only; that it was not appropriate for one people merely; that it should not be confined to the Hebrew people, but that there was a proper ground of praise for “all;” there was that in which all nations, of all languages and conditions, could unite. The ground of that was the fact that they had one Creator, Psa_100:3. The psalm is based on the unity of the human race; on the fact that there is one God and Father of all, and one great family on earth

O come, let us sing unto the Lord – The word here rendered come, means properly "go;" but it is used here, as it often is, as a formula of invitation, in calling on others to share in what is done by the speaker. It is here to be understood as used by one portion of an assembly convened for worship addressing the other portion, and calling on them to unite in the praise of God.

Let us make a joyful noise – The word used here means commonly to make a loud noise, to shout, Job_30:5. It is especially used
(a) of warlike shouts, Jos_6:16; 1Sa_17:20;
(b) of the shout of triumph, Jdg_15:14;
(c) of the sound or clangor of a trumpet, Num_10:9; Joe_2:1.

It may thus be used to denote any shout of joy or praise. In public worship it would denote praise of the most animated kind..

Book Review: The 8th Habit

Title/ Author/ ISBN; The 8th Habit Stephen R. Covey
ISBN-978-0-684-84665-1
Pages=328
Introduction The book 8th Habit is about personal leadership. The main theme is finding your voice and inspiring others to find theirs. When personal leadership is fully developed and grounded within, it can be used as a springboard to influence others [another dimension of effectiveness]. The 8th Habit is -“Finding your voice and inspire others to find theirs”. The book itself is not just about the 8th Habit, the title is misleading because once you finished reading the book, you end up with a “million things” to absorb/learn, practice, study and implement.
What is the book about? The book is divided into 15 Chapters. The book includes a DVD with 16 videos to be viewed almost at the end of every chapter. The videos are good “eye openers” and speak a lot of meaning. At the end of every chapter beginning in Chapter 4, there is a Question and Answer portion, these are off topic questions [sometimes] but has a lot of wisdom and good answers.

Chapters:
Chapter 1-The Pain
Chapter 2-The Problem
Chapter 3-The Solution

What do you think about the book? The success and the impact/influence of the 7 Habits across the globe transformed many individuals from just being “good” to “being great”. Personally, I’ve been a believer and a practitioner of the 7 Habits many years ago. My favorite is the Time Management Matrix-Quadrant2. Truly a remarkable starting point to get things organized in our personal life. Knowing the fundamental principles of a true working leadership theory, one should not hesitate to include the 7 Habits as the core/guiding principle in life. Later on, once mastery is attained to the fullest; apply/utilize the 8th Habit. The 8th Habit takes the 7 Habits as the basic foundation of personal development and then later implemented like a building block to transform a person, a family, a workplace or an organization. Influencing a person or a friend or a child or a colleague is a broad subject by itself and takes a lot of wisdom/demand on how to truly impact their lives with what we currently believe and practice. The author took time and effort and provided plenty of explanation and theories and gave examples on how to guide others to find their voice. The first step before we can even think of executing the 8th Habit is to find/know our voice. Once our voice is identified and engrained in our personal habits/systems and the voice itself is grounded in solid foundation of our own “life examples” and “life experiences” we can then share it to someone. You cannot share what you don’t have and it is impossible to really give what you do not practice. Many people are finding the hard truth of why our personal leadership is ineffective. The true/short answer is most likely; we have not “got it” ourselves yet. There are many components to become a great leader/person. One has to constantly sharpen those fundamental skills/traits daily and work towards flawlessness and constancy of application to real life situation. There is no shortcut to true personal leadership, one has to acquire each skillset one a time and then later on we become capable to inspire others and one day they too will nod their head and say – “this is a good example of true leadership and me too – I want to inspire others to find their meaning and voice”. In doing so, we transform a person at first and then our surroundings and then our organization and then the world.
Conclusions/Recommendations: I was in the mid part of the book when I shared the 8th Habit to someone. I asked him if he knows about the 7 Habits and he said yes. Then later I asked him if he heard about the 8th Habit, he became curious instantly but when I told him that the 8th Habit demands us to inspire others – he automatically become so antagonistic about the subject and we started having a debate. His point of view are these:
1. At work, I have to compete to survive.
2. Why would I inspire others? Who cares about other employees?
3. I worked hard to get where I am, everyone should go through the same ordeal.

I was speechless and unable to carry on the conversation. Later in my reading of the book, I came across the 5 cancerous behaviors. That is when I realized that a personal transformation must happen first. The transformation must come inside the core of our self – mind, body, heart and spirit. Without the visible transformation, a person cannot set out to sail in the business of inspiring other people. It takes great humility and firm belief system to transform an individual. A person can read several motivational/self-help books, listens to great speakers but without the spiritual transformation within, the human nature will take over and dominate the person and will eventually show the symptoms of the cancerous behaviors of criticizing, complaining, comparing, competing and contending. Step Zero-get rid of this cancerous attitudes.

The Book 8th Habit is a lengthy read. I managed to take notes as I went along through the 20 pages/day pace. I wish they have a Kindle version of the book so that I can just screenshot key points and take notes. There are a good amount of theories to dissect and absorb but generally the knowledge and wisdom of what Covey is talking about is easily comprehensible.

I made a summary of key points on this report to remind me of the things that I’ve read. Reading the key points will not immerse you to the full effect of the message of the book. You really have to read the book to know what Covey is talking about.

Recommendations:
1. Read the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People before reading this book.
2. Take notes when reading this book. Mark or highlight key points so that when you try to go back for a second reading, you know where to go.
3. Take time to absorb the material and then apply. You have to practice it.
4. Establish a clear personal mission statement. Once done, inspiring others will come natural.

Voice Of Truth
Songwriters: Hall, Mark; Casting Crowns;

Oh what I would do to have
The kind of faith it takes
To climb out of this boat I’m in
On to the crashing waves

To step out of my comfort zone
Into the realm of the unknown
Where Jesus is
And He’s holding out His hand

But the waves are calling out my name
And they laugh at me
Reminding me of all the times
I’ve tried before and failed

The waves they keep on telling me
Time and time again
"Boy, you’ll never win!
You’ll never win!"

But the voice of truth tells me a different story
The voice of truth says, "Do not be afraid!"
And the voice of truth says, "This is for My glory"
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I would choose to listen and believe the voice of truth

Oh what I would do to have
The kind of strength it takes
To stand before a giant
With just a sling and a stone

Surrounded by the sound
Of a thousand warriors
Shaking in their armor
Wishing they’d have had the strength to stand

But the giant’s calling out my name
And he laughs at me
Reminding me of all the times
I’ve tried before and failed

The giant keeps on telling me
Time and time again
"Boy you’ll never win!
You’ll never win!"

But the voice of truth tells me a different story
The voice of truth says, "Do not be afraid!"
And the voice of truth says, "This is for My glory"
Out of all the voices calling out to me

The voice of truth tells me a different story
The voice of truth says, "Do not be afraid!"
And the voice of truth says, "This is for My glory"
Out of all the voices calling out to me
I would choose to listen and believe
I would choose to listen and believe the voice of truth
The voice of truth

The Voice of Truth
I am for you, who can be against you.
You are my child
I call you by name, I have placed my hand upon you
I love you with an everlasting love
I am your shield and protector
Rest in my Love
Nothing that is good will be withheld from you
Do not be anxious about anything
Nothing can separate you from My Love
With me all things are possible

Starting Point; Day774

But it is from Him that you have your life in Christ Jesus, Whom God made our Wisdom from God, [revealed to us a knowledge of the divine plan of salvation previously hidden, manifesting itself as] our Righteousness [thus making us upright and putting us in right standing with God], and our Consecration [making us pure and holy], and our Redemption [providing our ransom from eternal penalty for sin].  1Corinthians 1:30 […read more]

wisdom-The trait of utilizing knowledge and experience with common sense and insight [insight from above]
righteousness-Adhering to moral principles
consecration-A solemn commitment of your life or your time to some cherished purpose (to a service or a goal)
redemption-the act of delivering from sin or saving from evil

There are three types of wisdom: […more]

The wisdom of God (I Corinthians 2:6-7)
The wisdom of the world (I Corinthians 2:6)
The wisdom of man (Ecclesiastes 1:16-18)

The gift of the word of wisdom is the application of knowledge that God gives you ( I Corinthians 2:6-7). This type of wisdom is a gift which cannot be gained through study or experience and should by no means try to replace them. The gift of the word of wisdom is seeing life from God’s perspective. As a Christian exercises this gift, he begins to develop a fear of the Lord. This is the "beginning of wisdom" according to Proverbs 1:7.

The gift of the word of wisdom is also the revealing of prophetic future; it is speaking hidden truths of what is not known. It is a supernatural perspective to ascertain the divine means for accomplishing God’s will in a given situation, and is a divinely given power to appropriate spiritual intuition in problem solving.

Furthermore, this gift involves having a sense of divine direction, being led by the Holy Spirit to act appropriately in a given set of circumstances, and rightly applying knowledge.

The gift of wisdom is the wisdom of God. It is the supernatural impartation of facts; it is not natural. You can’t earn it. It is received from God through prayer (Ephesians 1:17).

The gift of the word of wisdom works interactively with the other two revelation gifts: knowledge and discernment.

Magnificent

I had 4 hours of sleep and Monday is my 40Mile cycling day. I had to do something in the first 2 hours of my waking hours.  My watch said 12:10pm [Austin, Texas time] and the temperature outside reads 91’ F. I had two choices, skip cycling or just go no matter what.  When I left home, I had my doubts if I will be able to make it back.  I know my chest pains are somewhat back [I’m a cardiac patient at Day773 on Stent#2] and there is always that feeling that this is the day that I will not come back – I did it anyway.  I turned on my Spotify app in my Android phone and plug in my ear buds and tuned in to Matt Redman’s album.  At mile18, this song below [Magnificent] touched my heart. I stopped and placed the song in ‘repeat’.  Temperature rising and I could feel that this the worst day to ride 40 miles.  As the lyrics of the song started to soaked in, I feel weaker and weaker as I pedal steadily in a comfortable pace but then spiritually I felt something strange and it was beautiful.  I cannot stop, I cannot give up and I was determined to be back home. I was imagining what a great way to die – worshipping God in the Spirit.  I only had one prayer.  Lord, “just get me home”.  I pressed on as the song played over and over and I started to regain my strength until I reached home.

When I got home, I  looked up the true meaning of the word “magnificent” and the lyrics of the song – one thing I can say honestly from the bottom of my broken heart – He is Magnificent.

In every star that shines
And every time we breathe
Your glory, God, revealed
From distant galaxies
To here beneath our skin

You are higher than we ever could imagine
And closer than our eyes could ever see
You are…

Magnificent, You alone are holy
No one else as glorious as You
Magnificent, Jesus You are worthy
Who can shine as brightly as You do?
Magnificent
You’re so magnificent

You’re lighting up our lives
Illuminate our hearts
With everything You are

You are higher than we ever could imagine
And closer than our eyes could ever see

And closer than our eyes could ever see
We are pouring out our hearts here in Your presence

What Purpose?; Day773

For Christ died and lived again for this very purpose, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.  Romans 14:9 […read more]

Barnes on Rom 14:9 –
For to this end – For this purpose or design. The apostle does not say that this was the “only” design of his death, but that it was a main purpose, or an object which he had distinctly in view. This declaration is introduced in order to confirm what he had said in the previous verse, that in all circumstances we are the Lord’s. This he shows by the fact that Jesus died “in order” that we “might” be his.

And rose – This expression is rejected by most modern critics. It is wanting in many manuscripts, and has been probably introduced in the text from the margin.
And revived – There is also a variation in the Greek in this place, but not so great as to change the sense materially. It refers to his “resurrection,” and means that he was “restored to life” in order that he might exercise dominion over the dead and the living.

That he might be Lord – Greek. That he might “rule over.” The Greek word used here implies the idea of his being “proprietor” or “owner” as well as “ruler.” It means that he might exercise entire dominion over all, as the sovereign Lawgiver and Lord.

Both of the dead – That is, of those who “are” deceased, or who have gone to another state of existence. This passage proves that those who die are not annihilated; that they do not cease to be conscious; and that they still are under the dominion of the Mediator. Though their bodies moulder in the grave, yet the spirit lives, and is under his control. And though the body dies and returns to its native dust, yet the Lord Jesus is still its Sovereign, and shall raise it up again:
“God our Redeemer lives,
And often from the skies.
Looks down and watches all our dust,
Till he shall bid it rise.”
It gives an additional sacredness to the grave when we reflect that the tomb is under the watchful care of the Redeemer. Safe in his hands, the body may sink to its native dust with the assurance that in his own time he will again call it forth, with renovated and immortal powers, to be for ever subject to his will. With this view, we can leave our friends with confidence in his hands when they die, and yield our own bodies cheerfully to the dust when he shall call our spirits hence. But it is not only over the “body” that his dominion is established. This passage proves that the departed souls of the saints are still subject to him; compare Mat_22:32; Mar_12:27. He not only has “dominion” over those spirits, but he is their protector and Lord. They are safe under his universal dominion. And it does much to alleviate the pains of separation from pious, beloved friends, to reflect that they depart still to love and serve the same Saviour in perfect purity, and unvexed by infirmity and sin. Why should we wish to recall them from his perfect love in the heavens to the poor and imperfect service which they would render if in the land of the living?

And living –
To the redeemed, while they remain in this life. He died to “purchase” them to himself, that they might become his obedient subjects; and they are bound to yield obedience by all the sacredness and value of the price which he paid, even his own precious blood; compare 1Co_6:20, “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s;” 1Co_7:23; Rev_14:4 (Greek, “bought”); 1Pe_2:9, (Greek, “purchased”). If it be asked how this “dominion over the dead and the living” is connected with the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus, we may reply,
(1) That it is secured over Christians from the fact that they are “purchased” or “ransomed” by his precious blood; and that they are bound by this sacred consideration to live to him. This obligation every Christian feels 1Pe_1:18, and its force is continually resting on him. It was by the love of Christ that he was ever brought to love God at all; and his deepest and tenderest obligations to live to him arise from this source; 2Co_5:14-15.
(2) Jesus, by his death and resurrection, established a dominion over the grave. He destroyed him that had the power of death, Heb_2:14, and triumphed over him; Col_2:15. Satan is a humbled foe; and his sceptre over the grave is wrested from his hands. When Jesus rose, in spite of all the power of Satan and of people, he burst the bands of death, and made an invasion on the dominions of the dead, and showed that he had power to control all.
(3) this dominion of the Lord Jesus is felt by the spirits on high. They are subject to him because he redeemed them; Rev_5:9.
(4) it is often revealed in the Scriptures that “dominion” was to be given to the Lord Jesus as the reward of his sufferings and death; see the Joh_17:2, Joh_17:4-5; 5:26-29 notes; Phi_2:5-11 notes; Eph_1:20-21 notes; Heb_2:9-10; Heb_12:2 notes. The “extent” of his dominion as mediator is affirmed, in this place, only to be over the dead and the living; that is, over the human race. Other passages of the Scripture, however, seem to imply that it extends over all worlds.

But, on the contrary, as the Scripture says, What eye has not seen and ear has not heard and has not entered into the heart of man, [all that] God has prepared (made and keeps ready) for those who love Him [who hold Him in affectionate reverence, promptly obeying Him and gratefully recognizing the benefits He has bestowed]. Believe God Exist; Day769; Berlin Wall Lessons

And he who believes in (has faith in, clings to, relies on) the Son has (now possesses) eternal life. But whoever disobeys (is unbelieving toward, refuses to trust in, disregards, is not subject to) the Son will never see (experience) life, but [instead] the wrath of God abides on him. [God’s displeasure remains on him; His indignation hangs over him continually.] [Hab. 2:4.]  John 3:36

believe- (verb) accept as true; take to be true

Everyday, I’m finding tiny reasons to spend a few minutes of my time reading the Bible, study the daily devotional and most of all observing my daily life.  I take time to examine what went on during my full waking hours and at the end of the day I reflect and pause for a few minutes to see what surprises I have at hand. Today is no different and I’m not surprised anymore.  The scriptures that I studied daily is taken from Billy Graham’s daily devotional website.  Those are preset scriptures that has been planned/put together long time ago by his team or Billy Graham himself.  But the life that I’m living is random – the things that I do or the books that I read or the materials that is coming into my lap or the people that I interact daily are not .  But many times throughout my Christian life, I get this two things in alignment by itself.  What I mean by that? – the scriptures that I am studying coincides to what I am experiencing in my daily life in real time [Input-Output alignment].  How do you explain that?  Say for instance today, the scripture is from John 3:36, I study the scripture first thing in the morning and later in the day I came across p.246 of the book that I’m reading and then tells me to watch a video called Berlin Wall and in that video, a screen comes up with the banner below that reads:

You can’t change the world
But you can change the facts
And when you change the facts
You changes point of view
When you change point of view
You can change the world

My version:
How to change the world?
1. Change point of view [belief system]
2. Transform yourself to a better person
3. Influence one person at a time [at home, at work, a blog reader]
4. Change the person
5. That person repeats Step #3
6. The world changes – one person at a time

Life is exciting when you believe in God.  There is always a surprise.

Berlin Wall, 8th Habit Video #13
I was trying to look for the Berlin Wall video in YouTube that came with the 8th Habit book but unfortunately nothing is posted there.  I have no time to encode the video to .wmv at this time so no video to get the point across.  Anyway, it’s about the Berlin Wall, Germany was divided into two parts by a physical barrier known as the Berlin Wall from 1961 to 1989.  The video emphasized more on the after effect of the fall of the Berlin Wall.  After the fall, two mindsets existed and began to emerged.  Here’s my notes on the video.

Berlin Wall Lessons
1. Barriers in people [not just physical but spiritual/emotional]
2. Wall prevents communication
3. Barrier cannot be broken in a short period of time [slow process]
4. People are different [division exist even after the wall was taken down]
5. We label people even after the barrier is broken [oh, he/she is from the other side]

West Berlin Mindset
1. Luxury
2. Materialistic [buying big house, nice cars]
3. Career
4. Freedom

East Berlin Mindset
1. Insecurity [likes the security of the old regime of wall]
2. Hard time adjusting to the freer country
3. Critical of the new generation
4. Very slow in adapting to the new life

Lesson Learned:
Adapt to the new environment immediately because sooner or later, you will.  Why not just do it!

Divine Source; Day768; Day0001-New Job; Levels of Initiative

For no prophecy ever originated because some man willed it [to do so–it never came by human impulse], but men spoke from God who were borne along (moved and impelled) by the Holy Spirit.  2Peter 1:21

Prophecy:
Knowledge of the future (usually said to be obtained from a divine source)
A prediction uttered under divine inspiration

Intuition:
Instinctive knowing (without the use of rational processes)

Have you ever been in a difficult situation and started thinking that it is a mistake being there.  This phenomena always happen at Mile 001 or Day 001.  I’m in that “confusion state” right now [homeostasis-resistance to change] .  I’ve been with my job for so many years that I can say that all the routines and structures are well in place [I can do my job while sleeping stuff…]. Everything is different now and I have to make some fine tuning on the ways that I spend my time at work.  I’m still with Samsung but this time my department has 7 members only [compared to >50 previously].  I will be spending more time in the office area now than in the factory floor and will be using my creative thinking brain the more.

I am not worried about my job or where I am because I know I was destined to be in this situation. Although at Day001, I had my thoughts of negativity of my new situation but I remember something – when you desire something in your heart-it will be given unto you. Many years ago, I started having an interest in System Thinking and Inventive Problem Solving so I started consuming materials regarding the subject.  I read books, collect articles, try out new methodology to problem solving and started solving difficult problems etc.  I’ve probably over saturated myself now with all the knowledge that I soaked up for a few years and it is time to do it and apply it to real world situation.  I feel like the prophecy has been fulfilled in my life. This is going to be a great start!

I’m almost done with the 8th Habit and learning has been very good.  There are new things that I did not know before that has been explained clearly.  This one caught my attention.  I’m still trying to test out and “self-asking” which level is the best or ideal because if you are in Level 7 and something goes wrong – that is big trouble example: a child make a mistake and a parent ask “Why did you not ask me?”  Take a look.

Principle-Set Your House In Order; Day766; 5S

IN THOSE days Hezekiah became deadly ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came and said to him, Thus says the Lord: Set your house in order, for you shall die; you shall not recover. [II Chron. 32:24-26; Isa. 38:1-8.]  2Kings 20:1

Set Your House In Order
Many of us may have experience a warning statement in life in the form of a sickness, disease, a cancer, an accident, a near death moment, a loss of love ones, a loss of job, a failed relationship, a failed career, a failed business, a failed body, a failed mind, a broken spirit.  I wish we all receive a warning like this one to tell us that we are dying and the end of life is near.  Don’t expect to hear audible voices telling us what will happen next but expect to see and heed those signs as you progress in life. Life has plenty of road signs especially when are heading towards destruction.

A good way to start putting our chaotic life in order is to use the 5s methodology – SORT, STRAIGHTEN, SHINE, STANDARDIZE-SUSTAIN.  The most important phase is the sustaining part.  Most of us can do the first 4 easily but fails to continue to sustain the changes we make throughout lifetime.

Principle-Talk/Walk Right; Day765; Big Rocks

But if we [really] are living and walking in the Light, as He [Himself] is in the Light, we have [true, unbroken] fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses (removes) us from all sin and guilt [keeps us cleansed from sin in all its forms and manifestations].  1John 1:7

Sometimes we are placed in a difficult situation where we have to come up with life changing “yes or no” answer.  Many times we failed because we neglect to answer a simple question. “Is it the right thing to do?”  I know that I’ve done so many mistakes in life and I know that if only I’ve examined the situation objectively and answer the question, the outcome will be different. Well, past is past and we cannot undo lost opportunities, heartaches, regrets and emotional pain.  What we can do next time is – be careful of whatever we say or do and include a checklist: Right or Wrong? …. then proceed.

I’m on page 174 on the 8th Habit book and so far I’ve gained a lot insights.  The book includes a DVD with video lessons and on video #9-Big Rocks, the author demonstrates an analogy of Big Rocks to Life Priorities. Watch the video first then later on make a list of things that are important to you.  Once you have identified the “important things”  start prioritizing daily and weekly on how you are going to handle the most important things in life-the one that matters most [the Quadrant II stuffs].

Principle-Serve One Master; Day764

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will stand by and be devoted to the one and despise and be against the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (deceitful riches, money, possessions, or whatever is trusted in). Matthew 6:24

2. One mind
3. One heart

Suffering=Lessons Plus…; Day760; Plan-Do

If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us: 2Timothy 2:12

Suffering produces learning.  Often times, our deepest sorrow can brings us great joy.  I’m looking at life in a different lens now.  I’ve seen enough distortion of happiness in my “half life” existence.  What I’ve learned is that when we suffer, there is nowhere else to go but the relief of suffering and when we fail, the only destination is success.

I’m tweaking the format of this journal a little bit.  I’ve learned that there are a few key items that I normally do every day and I don’t want to miss anything.  The PLAN-DO list is from  Deming’s PDCA Cycle.  I figured that every day is a day of Planning and Doing. This helps me become more productive every day.  Also, I’ve noticed that whatever I write on paper or on a whiteboard or in my notebook, sooner or later those actionable items are completed.

Give it a try.

Book Review: The Checklist Manifesto

Title/ Author/ ISBN;

The Checklist Manifesto
Atu Gawande,
ISBN-978-0-8050-9174-8
Pages=211

Introduction:

Atu Gawande is a medical doctor first and a journalist/writer second. His specialty in the medical field is General and Gastrointestinal Surgery. He is known for as an expert on reducing error, improving safety and increasing efficiency in surgery. He wrote The Checklist Manifesto to make an impact to the world in terms of preventing unnecessary loss of lives due to human error and carelessness of procedures in the operating room, hospital and or any workplace. He explained in clear examples how a simple checklist saved lives in his own operating room and later observed others do the same

What is the book about?

If I have to summarize the book into one sentence, it will be like this-“Make a Checklist of Everything You Do”. Of course the contents of the book are more than that.

The Table of Contents:
1. The Problem of Extreme Complexity
2. The Checklist
3. The End of the Master Builder
4. The Idea
5. The First Try
6. The Checklist Factory
7. The Test
8. The Hero in the age of checklist
9. The Save

The Structure of a Good Checklist
1. Simple
2. Brief
3. To the Point
4. One Page
5. Step by Step
6. One already knows

Complex Environment Difficulties:
1. Fallibility of Human Memory and Attention
-mundane, routine matters, faulty memory , distractions
2. People skip steps even when they remember them
-thinks that a step in not important and can be skipped.

Three Different Kinds of Problems:
1. Simple-baking a cake from a mix; a recipe can be followed
2. Complicated- sending a rocket to the moon, no straightforward recipe
3. Complex-raising a child, expertise is valuable but cannot guarantee if the next child will be a success also; outcome is uncertain; not impossible to raise a child, just complex.

US Airways Flight 1549 Miracle at Hudson River, 2009
-no loss of lives
-at first, investigators thought it was the pilot who really did a good job but then later in the investigation, it was learned that the checklist and procedures, the crews and it’s effort saved the 155
-key items of the miracle were-teamwork of the crew, adherence to procedures and individual skills of the crew

Personal Code of Conduct
1. Expectation of Selflessness-accept responsibility for others; place needs and concerns of those who depend on us above our own
2. Expectation of Skill-aim for excellence in our knowledge and expertise
3. Expectation of Trustworthiness-we are responsible in our personal behavior toward our charges.
4. Expectation of Discipline-discipline in following prudent procedures and in functioning with others; make discipline a NORM.

What do you think about the book?

We’ve seen “checklist in action” in so many scenarios in our career and personal life. Anywhere we go there is a checklist present. Examples such as going to the doctor’s office, bringing our car to the dealer for a regular maintenance, doing grocery shopping, planning a trip or a vacation, doing big projects at work, performing a failure analysis, performing a complex repair of a complex system, going to college, joining the military. We’ve seen them all but how often do we study our checklist and revise them so as to yield an efficient flow of execution and how often do we question someone else’s checklist or procedure. At the basic concept of human behavior, we normally just accept what is given to us. No questions ask. “Ok, I’ll fill it up” or “I’ll do it without complaining”. Reasons for that is because most of the time, we do not have control of the checklist or the procedures. I recently finished reading another book about “Managing Chaos and Complexity” and I’ve learned that chaos will always be there because life is a complex system. Humans will always face chaos no matter what. After reading “The Checklist Manifesto” I had another answer on how to manage “chaos” – use a checklist. Simplify every complex task into a one page checklist.

Conclusion:

I did not realize that I had been using a checklist all my life. I have journals, small notebook for personal stuff, small notebook for work related materials, I have action items [actionable items] even the moment I wake up I did not even know it that I am following a checklist. When I write, the tone of my writing is in a checklist form. In some ways, most of us are using a checklist and we don’t even know it. Even for those that don’t even write it on paper- those items on our head when we make a decision, those are mental checklist. Reading The Checklist Manifesto reiterates the importance of a checklist. As mentioned in the book, there are key ingredients of a good checklist and it has to be followed. Silly, but the author made a checklist on “how to make a checklist” because like any other activities, when we function robotically, we miss things. Checklist has to be analyzed several times because there are times we miss a step or the step is confusing. .

Recommendations:
Read the book, it will change the way you look at procedures.
Apply it, it will change the way you create a checklist and procedures.
Live it, it will make your life/work less chaotic.

Principle-Be Pure; Day759

Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.  1Timothy 5:22

If the activity is sinful in nature-stay away, do not be a part of it; applicable in most situation in life.
Lust of the eyes-lust of covetousness; delighted with riches and possessions
Lust of the flesh-an evil desire for the things of the flesh; adultery, fornication, pre-marital sex, homosexuality
Pride of Life-craving for honor and applause; a stubborn mindset that refuses to repent and confess their sins; a hardened heart; King of the Hill Syndrome (I am the best mentality), get rid of it.
True remedy-Walk in the Spirit, no other way.  Cannot make these as a to do list-it becomes legalistic and no power.  When we walk in the Spirit, flesh loses its power and dominion

Not EOL; Day755

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.  2Corinthians 5:8

Verses like this one today put courage and excitement to my dilemma of being a cardiac patient.  It’s been 755 days since my stent#2 and I’m still waiting and expecting that the #3 will come and/or there will be no more #3 and my life will come to an end.  Any day now…. and that is how I live my life.  Everyday I wake up with the intention of living a full day as if this is the last one. Yes, I can bike 40 miles and swim 2.4 miles without any struggle but the risk of my stent#3 will always be there in the corner of my eyes.  With this journal, I can honestly tell you that I am not afraid to be absent from this body because I know that when the time comes, it is not the end of life.  “There is more…” is the promise.  There is that expectation of how I will be going to enjoy the presence of god forever when I leave this earth. How exciting!
